London Irish Literary Travel LILT is a small team of literary enthusiasts who organise trips and excursions to places associated with Irish writers in Britain, Ireland and France.

London Irish Literary Travel was born as a hobby. "The concept of LILT arose out of conversations in the late 1990s between two friends who were discussing Parisian philosophers becoming ever more despairing: one had committed su***de, another had strangled his wife and so on. Barmy intellectuals, not an optimist among them, all doom and gloom! Talk of despair led to Beckett, Beckett in Paris, Joy

ce, Joyce in Paris and then Joyce and Beckett...in Paris. A trip to Paris swiftly followed and arriving on a cold, frosty, but bright blue-skied morning it was a joy to seek out places associated with Joyce and Beckett and start making notes. Within a few months the original pamphlet was ready." Today we have a third edition of our specialised literary guide, ‘The Paris of Joyce and Beckett’, which acts as a focus on our Parisian guided tours. Guided walking tours in and around London, as well as Paris, can also be arranged throughout the year by appointment, just contact us via our contact page.

Apologies for the extremely long absence!

Surely there's been a lack of posts here; however, work behind the scenes has never ceased all these years.

In fact, Brian O'Shea from LILT has recently come up with a new initiative, and we hope that many will like to contribute.

Inspired by Joyce's "Pomes Penyeach", we invite you to send us short poems and prose bursts to let us know how you feel about "Ulysses".

How has reading it impacted your life? What influence do you think it has had on the modern world?

Let your proverbial creative juices flow and share your own work with us. Email [email protected] to get involved in this project!

And worry not, we have something in the pipeline for Samuel Beckett too... Stay tuned!

Itinerary X begins at Café de la Mairie in Place St Sulpice, where Beckett is imagined to have been "listening keenly to the radio broadcast of the Ireland v France football match" on a warm afternoon in June 1953.

Fast forward sixty-three years and Euro 2016 have recently come to an end with Portugal's victory. Now with the new technology available it's hard to imagine how it must have been like to support one's team back in the day but drinking a café au lait or a refreshing bière blonde must have been in the picture...

Happy !

"As he walks, Joyce is thinking of endings and new beginnings, death and resurrection, absorption and separation, time and tide, ebb and flow. Crossing the first half of Pont de Bir Hakeim, (Pont de Passy in 1924), he descends the steps and proceeds to walk along the entire length of the Allée des Cygnes towards the tip of the island. (...) He has a sudden but fleeting longing for 'la vie quotidienne de travail, la vie ordinaire' of routine, stability, predictability, communal endeavour and belonging, but he has chosen his path and continues his walk with some sadness as, in an illuminated moment, he sees and feels deeply the sheer fragility of everyday happiness."

"Nine itineraries around Paris and one around London, in the footsteps of Joyce and Beckett, based on imaginary scenarios concerning the two authors at different points of their lives."
