Remember when Rishi Sunak recently announced a 1.25% National Insurance hike?
Well, turns out his wife Akshata Murthy may have saved millions by avoiding tax.
Ms Murthy, whose family business is said to be worth around £3.5bn, is registered non-domicile in the UK. She may have used the status to save money in tax over several years.
The classification is not illegal and can save an individual from paying UK tax on income from dividends from foreign investments, rental payments on property overseas or bank interest. It also allows an individual to avoid inheritance tax in the UK.
The Labour Party has called on the chancellor to "urgently explain" how much the chancellor, and his family have saved on taxes.
A spokeswoman for Ms Murthy said the businesswoman did not claim non-dom status but was automatically classified as such due to being a citizen of India.
