Frontier America's ranching and USA expert, Joanne Moores, recently had the pleasure of experiencing Texas' Dixie Dude Ranch...
Just 12 minutes outside of Bandera, the Dixie Dude offers visitors an immersive taste of the authentic cowboy lifestyle. Indeed, the true highlight of any stay is the opportunity to saddle up and explore the picturesque trails that wind through the ranch's vast 725 acres.
The wranglers expertly pair you with a perfect steed tailored to your riding ability, whether that's a spirited, fiery mount or a more steady, plodding partner. All of the rides, two scheduled daily, are leisurely nose-to-tail treks, but the ranch's adventures extend far beyond horseback riding.
Guests can cast a line in the well-stocked fishing pond, challenge one another to a game of horseshoes, or simply relax by the swimming pool. When the evening draws in, the rotating schedule of activities varies, from watching a skilled trick roper in action to gatherings around the crackling campfire spent listening to the soulful strumming of a cowboy crooner.
What struck me most on my stay was the sense of camaraderie. Whether sharing meals in the communal dining areas or mingling with fellow guests during the evenings, there's an undeniable spirit of togetherness that sets the Dixie Dude Ranch apart. It's a place where strangers quickly become friends, united by a shared appreciation for the simple pleasures of ranch life.
Open year-round, with the exception of December 16th to 26th, the ranch is well-suited to families with kids. On the Texas kids spring break, which falls between March 08-23, the weather is mild, and the ranch is bustling with energy and activities tailored for young cowboys and girls.
Couples and adult groups will find April/May and September/October ideal. These shoulder seasons offer pleasant weather and a mix of fellow guests, creating a convivial atmosphere.

Discovering the Mayan Dude Ranch with Joanne Moores, Frontier America's resident ranching and USA expert!
Located just six minutes from the charming town of Bandera, the Mayan Dude Ranch offers a truly unique and welcoming Texan experience. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted as though I was family (transfers available from San Antonio Airport) and this warm, Texan hospitality set the tone for the entire stay.
The ranch is in fact, a family-run operation, with around 20 Hicks cowboys and cowgirls working together to create unforgettable holidays for their guests.
Rustic accommodations (hotel-style rooms with Wi-Fi or individual cabins dotted throughout the grounds), exceptional home-cooked food, and all your beer, wine, and soft drinks are included in the rate so there's no need to worry about extra costs.
I had a drink at the bar before joining the other guests for an evening of country dancing lessons, a delicious outdoor-cooked dinner, and a nighttime hayride. But the true highlight of the Mayan Dude Ranch experience is the horseback riding.
The dedicated wranglers ensure a safe and enjoyable time on the trail for all skill levels and they fit you to the ideal horse. It's worth noting that the riding here is all nose to tail on retired, well trained mounts suited to the beginner.
Waking up early for the breakfast ride is well worth it to experience the serene beauty of the ranch and we rode to a secluded spot for a freshly cooked, family-style breakfast.
The guests I met varied from repeat visitors who return year after year to simply soak up the peaceful ambiance: those who haven't ridden for 20-30 years and are using the ranch to ease themselves back into the activity: and those who use the ranch as a base, joining a few rides but also venturing out to nearby Fredericksburg and San Antonio. On the one-size-fits-all nightly rate, non-riders are welcome to enjoy the amenities as well.

Welcome to the Wildcatter Ranch—today's review by Frontier America ranching and USA expert Joanne Moores...
My drive from Fort Worth to Wildcatter took 90 minutes. When you reach the plains, where you'll find cattle on either side, it's wonderfully scenic. A taste of what was to come, the ranch itself is filled with rustic charm, its décor, a blend of cowboy artefacts and modern comforts.
The daily two-hour horseback adventures will take you along scenic trails, every ride guided by friendly wranglers who share stories of the land's history. Alternative pursuits include tomahawk throwing, clay shooting, archery (I had the chance to try out), hiking, and roping. I also had the opportunity to enjoy a refreshing dip in the pool. What a view, and, as you'll see from my photos, in the evening the sunsets are nothing short of magical.
For accommodation, there is a choice of cabins and hotel rooms. The cabins are only a two-minute walk away to the right of the main lodge, each one boasting a porch that faces the stunning view.
All in all, a beautiful ranch that is only a stone's throw from Fort Worth, and a great starting point for a holiday where you want to combine a ranch holiday with a tailor-made self-drive...

A belated call out, but I am sure many of our fans will have a story to share.
Let's celebrate the wonderful horses we have had the pleasure to ride, and highlight special work they do in helping children and adults the world over to learn about horses, about their care and how to ride them as well as all the many other valuable life skills which horses teach us...
October 5th is World teachers Day. We find teachers everywhere. Not just in schools. Some of the best teachers of equestrian sport are our dear old riding school ponies. Without riding school ponies, many of today's celebrated equestrians would never have started their careers. We need to celebrate these wonderful horses and the special work they do to help children and adults the world over to learn about horses, about their care and how to ride them as well as all the many other valuable life skills which horses teach us.
Horses teach us confidence, responsibility, to regulate our emotions, the benefits of patience, the value of hard work, proprioception and awareness of our body and posture. They help us to become better versions of ourselves.
When things go to plan, and we achieve amazing things, and when it doesn't go as we expected and we have to work out why, we must remember to thank the horse we are riding, and all the horses we have ridden before who have taught us everything we know up to this point.
