Today is World Giraffe Day. Giraffes are the tallest of all land animals and with a tongue that is almost half a metre long, they are able to browse foliage almost six metres from the ground and they can even run an astonishing 37 miles per hour over short distances. Chitwa Chitwa, a small and charming safari lodge in the Sabi Sands, got it’s name from an ageing giraffe many years ago. The old giraffe bull shared his lakeside home with the Brink family, signalling his arrival through the sounds of his old joints creaking. Still today, his watchful essence is felt presiding over the lodge. Much like this giraffe, the lodge is magnificent and graceful in appearance, yet humble enough to evaporate into the surrounding beauty of the unspoiled bush of the Sabi Sand. Giraffes are now protected. Habitat loss resulting from expanding agricultural activities, illegal hunting and the effects of ongoing civil unrest in a handful of African countries had caused giraffe populations to plummet so much so that the IUCN has reclassified the conservation status of the species as vulnerable.

Today is World Turtle Day. We saw so many turtles in Mozambique recently we thought we’d share a few facts: did you know turtles don’t have teeth? They use their beak like mouths to grasp their food. Their hard shell is made up of 50 bones fused together yet they also have light, spongy bones to help them float. It is estimated that only 1 in 1,000 marine turtles make it to adulthood and can spend around 20 years at sea before returning home, using their amazing ability to navigate from their sensitivity to Earth’s magnetic field. Incredible, beautiful creatures.
