Running alongside the Mozambican border for some 300 kilometres, Zimbabwe's Eastern Highlands is a mountainous area of spectacular natural beauty: rolling hills, green forests, rugged peaks, misty valleys, deep gorges, cascading waterfalls, and sparkling rivers and lakes. This is a totally different side to the Zimbabwe that most visitors know.

This week one of our customers asked our experts:

“I have always wanted to see elephants in the wild – where should I go?”

Our Sales Advisor Felicity recommended the following:

Africa is blessed with some of the planet’s finest wildlife, and deciding exactly where to travel is all part of the fun in planning your African adventure. Africa’s elephant population can be found in all corners of the continent, but for the real pachyderm lover, Africa Travel recommends one of three stops to ensure that you maximise your viewing of these gentle giants.

In Botswana the Chobe National Park is elephant-central, with up-to 50,000 supported during the season. Taking a cruise along the Chobe River will yield particularly good sightings, and as the Park can be reached easily from the nearby Victoria Falls there is no excuse not to visit!

Next up is the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, where similar numbers are found, often congregated around the numerous waterholes. Staying somewhere such as Nehimba Lodge will guarantee you front row seats to view the massive herds.

Last but by no means least is the Addo Elephant National Park in South Africa’s Eastern Cape region, which his named after its most famous inhabitants. Get up close to them by staying at the Gorah Elephant Camp, where they are often found wandering the grounds and sucking up water from the property’s swimming pool.

This week one of our customers asked our experts:

“My friend has recommended that I avoid staying on the Waterfront in Cape Town, claiming it is very noisy – what would you suggest?

Our Sales Advisor Chris recommended the following:

Whilst the Waterfront Development is often considered to be the tourist centre of the city, and is home to some great hotels such as the One&Only, Cape Grace & Silo, it can get very busy. Locals as well as tourists flock to the shops there, it is jam-packed with restaurants, and helicopters are forever buzzing overhead. Fortunately there are many different areas of the city which offer quieter stays.

Head for the base of Table Mountain and the peaceful residential area of Tamboerskloof to stay at the luxurious Kensington Place, or venture out into the city’s very own wine area of Constantia to stay at the exclusive Last Word Constantia property. Although located close to the city centre, guests staying at the famous Mount Nelson are ensconced in acres of tranquil gardens, with the beaches of Camp’s Bay, and the Bay Hotel, also tending to be less noisy than the Waterfront. If you are prepared to stay a little further outside the city, then the Cape Peninsula has some really nice, and more importantly, placid offerings such as the Last Word Long Beach and the Hout Bay Manor.

This week one of our customers asked our experts:

“Where can I enjoy a hot air balloon safari in Africa?”

Our Sales Supervisor Julia recommended the following:

Whilst being in a safari vehicle or out on foot tracking animals are both wonderful experiences, there really is nothing to compare to soaring effortlessly across bright blue skies in a hot air balloon, looking down onto the action as the wildlife below carries on blissfully with its daily routines. Although an early start is invariably involved, from the safety of your wicker cocoon you will witness Africa like never before.

Ballooning bucket list destinations in Africa are really Kenya & Tanzania - with the iconic Masai Mara & Serengeti National Parks leading the way, however those travelling elsewhere in East Africa can get high in Rwanda’s Akagera National Park and in the Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda.
Further south, Botswana’s Okavango Delta & the sand dunes of Namibia will never look better than from the basket of a balloon, and finally there is South Africa, which has a whole host of ballooning locations from the Mabula Private Game Reserve and the Cradle of Humankind, to the wine country of Stellenbosch.

Africa Travel are able to arrange hot air balloon rides in all of these locations so do get in contact with us to see Africa from a whole new perspective.

Female hyenas are bigger, stronger, and tougher than their male counterparts. Hyenas live in large clans, and when food is available, females and cubs eat first. Once male cubs are old enough to manage on their own (at age two or three) they are thrown out of their clan and must find a new one. It's entirely up to the females to decide whether or not to accept a new male into their group.

Back in the 1990s the number of annual visitors to Liuwa Plains could be counted on one hand. Not because there is nothing there – Liuwa Plains is home to Africa’s second biggest wildebeest migration – but because it was so remote. And although there is now a handful of lodges and operators at Liuwa, it still remains one of Africa’s last hidden gems.

This week one of our customers asked our experts:

“What are the must-sees when I go to Cape Town?”

Our Sales Advisor Chris recommended the following:

The Big 2 must-dos are taking the cableway up to Table Mountain, and the ferry across to Robben Island. Africa Travel always suggest booking entry tickets and time slots as soon as you can as the queues for both can get very long in high season, with the ferries to Robben Island in particular sometimes booked solid for days on end. Cloud cover and high winds can also often lead to the cable cars being taken out of service, so our advice is to try to get up Table Mountain as soon after your arrival as you can.

Once you have ticked off those two big-hitters, there are still masses of sights to see. The beautiful Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is not just for the green-fingered, whilst the magnificent Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) is an art-lover’s treat. Instagrammers can fill their boots with beachside glamour in Camps Bay or Clifton, with those in search of stunning vistas should head down the stunning Cape Peninsula to the iconic Cape Point.

Some serious retail therapy is available on the ever-expanding Waterfront Development, and time should be spent wandering the city’s historic Gardens area. There is also the colourful Bo-Kaap neighbourhood to explore, the city’s very own wine estates to sample in Constantia, afternoon tea to be taken at the famous Mount Nelson Hotel, shark-cage diving for the brave in Simon’s Town…..

The major challenge will be trying to cram it all in to your visit to Cape Town!

19/06/2024

This week one of our customers asked our experts:

“I would love to go on a walking safari but have no idea where I should be heading to?

Our Sales Director Chris recommended the following:

A walking safari in the company of an experienced guide is a wonderful way to really get under the skin of Africa and to get up close to some of the continent’s most extraordinary creatures. Going on safari in a custom-built vehicle will always be a special experience, but nothing really beats exploring the African bush on foot, seeing the smallest of things in all their glory. The walking is never too arduous and only a reasonable level of fitness is required.

Zambia has long been considered the birthplace of walking safaris, with pioneering guides such as the legendary Robin Pope & Norman Carr leading a path through the South Luangwa National Park which many have subsequently, and literally followed. Neighbouring Zimbabwe & Botswana are also meccas for the walking safari-goer, but it is arguably now East Africa where some of the finest game-viewing experiences on foot can be enjoyed - the Masai Mara and the Serengeti topping the charts.

For somewhere different, the desert landscapes of Namibia are home to a number of endemic species and provide perfect walking terrain, whilst many of South Africa’s National Parks and Game Reserves offer thrilling walking opportunities. Wherever you decide on, be assured that you will not be disappointed.

Stretching over 300 miles, Lake Malawi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the jewel in the crown of Malawi's tourist attractions. Discovered over 150 years ago by Dr David Livingstone, this vast body of clear bluewater (it's the ninth largest lake in the world) is one of the best freshwater diving and snorkelling spots in Africa and is fringed by crowd free golden sand beaches that can easily be combined with a safari in Malawi itself or in the game rich South Luangwa National Park in neighbouring Zambia.

This week one of our customers asked our experts:

“Which would you recommend - Mauritius or the Seychelles?”

Our Sales Advisor Felicity recommended the following:

In a word - both! If your dream destination is all about powder-white beaches, azure seas, palm trees and a luxurious hotel, then both Mauritius & the Seychelles tick all those boxes.

Mauritius is the relatively more developed & cosmopolitan of the two, and is home to a disproportionately large number of luxury five-star hotels, many catering superbly for the massive family market. Over the centuries it has been a melting pot of the French, Chinese, English, Dutch & Indian, all of whom have left their marks on the culture and cuisine. Aside from the beaches, the fascinating interior is lush and mountainous, with the island well connected with flights to the UK, mainland Europe, Dubai & South Africa.

By contrast, the islands which comprise the Seychelles are much smaller in size, with the tourism industry a little less developed. There is still a good selection of five-star hotels, but aside from the spectacular beaches, which are on a par with the very finest found anywhere on the planet, opportunities to explore on dry land are more limited. Being ‘a thousand miles from anywhere’ does mean that much of what is consumed is imported, which results in high prices, but can you really put a price on being in such extraordinary surroundings? The Seychelles have air links to the Middle East, and to both Kenya & South Africa, which allows us to create some wonderful bush & beach holidays.

05/06/2024

This week one of our customers asked our experts:

“We are teachers so our family are only able to travel in the school summer holidays - where would you recommend that we go?”

Our Sales Supervisor Julia recommended the following:

Being limited to travelling in July and August is no real hardship as much of Africa is at its best during this time.

In fact East Africa is at its very best during the UK’s summer months, with the iconic Migration in full flow as the herds arrive into the Masai Mara from Tanzania. The beaches of Zanzibar are also good at this time, allowing families to create the perfect bush and beach combination. Moving south, it is the perfect time to travel to the game parks of Zimbabwe and Zambia, with Botswana’s remarkable Okavango Delta in full flood, and in all its glory. Temperatures in Namibia are comfortable enough to allow some serious exploration there in July & August, and although in South Africa, Cape Town can sometimes be a little wet and windy, the sun shines year-round in KwaZulu Natal and game viewing in the Kruger is at its optimum.

Both of the Indian Ocean beauties, Mauritius & The Seychelles, are pretty much year-round destinations and can easily be twinned with safaris in South Africa or Kenya.

A small word of warning though – with so many people only able to get away in July & August, we do advise booking as far ahead as you can as flights and the best family-friendly resorts & private safari villas tend to get booked up well in advance.
