PLACE is an independent, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the making of great places across Northern Ireland. PLACE is composed of a multi-disciplinary team combining expertise and extensive experience in architecture, town planning, visual art, curation, design, social science, education, research, community engagement and eve

nt management. PLACE was established in 2004 by the RSUA as a vehicle through which the public could engage with the built environment professions. Since then, PLACE has evolved into a pioneering organisation with a wide-ranging portfolio of projects & services. We became independent in 2011, and now work with community groups, arts organisations, young people, academic institutions, and government departments to help people make and sustain quality places for an inclusive, just, and prosperous society.

In May 2019 the Linen Quarter BID produced a new vision to help shape the future development of the district. In the last four years £250m of new hotels and offices have been delivered. In the next five years the District will see a brand new Transport Hub, a redeveloped BBC building, and flagship offices for Deloitte and Kainos. The N-S Glider extension, the Gasworks foot/cycle bridge, and a swathe of new public realm will also be underway. Yet so much more can be done, and this is your opportunity to help shape the debate.

As the marketing building on the former Sirocco site is demolished, we wanted to share this video from the launch of last year's Open House Belfast - which, it turns out, was the first and last event to be held in that building over its 10 year history. Thanks to our partners at Waterside, who granted us and audiences access to the site.

Also launching this evening: Urban Intervention, curated by Mirjami Schuppert.

Urban Intervention deploys strategies similar to the ones used on the “TBC” tag campaign associated with the Cathedral Quarter redevelopment plans. The campaign aroused social media fury and inspired creative engagement with Belfast city centre by local arts organisations.

Historical news and media imagery from the UTV Archive, printed onto posters and scattered around the Cathedral Quarter, are brought into the present day to coexist with contemporary life. Alongside printed material, selected UTV archive footage enters into the commercial and not for profit spaces in the area. Roaming TV monitors are hosted by local shops, cafes and organisation, creating chance encounters with the old films, displaying longer glimpses of the programmes used as source material for the posters. The presence of various temporalities in the streets of the city highlights the difference that time and perspective can make; what once was taken as true, through the passing of time may be revealed to be lies.

Urban Intervention is part of Belfast Photo Festival 2019. This is part of the PRONI, Northern Ireland Screen Digital Film Archive and ITV partnership project to preserve the UTV Archive for future generations.

This week look out for televisions in Belfast's Cathedral Quarter:

Previous locations: Windsor Photoprints (17 North Street), Belfast Exposed (23 Donegall Street), A Sailor’s Grave Tattoo Studio (139 Royal Ave), (PS2, 71 Royal Avenue), Established Coffee (54 Hill Street) and the Black Box (18-22 Hill Street). The original archive footage will appear throughout the festival in this special online collection: https://digitalfilmarchive.net/collection/urban-intervention-109

PLACE update from board - https://mailchi.mp/3f5a90639ff5/public-update-from-place

You will be aware that last Wednesday 3 April 2019, PLACE was notified by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland (ACNI) that our application for core and programme funding for 2019/20 has been declined. While this news has been deeply disappointing for us, we have been encouraged and buoyed by the m...

Words of support... from Seedhead Arts "It's been a week since PLACE received the devastating news of a 100% funding cut from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

It's hard to articulate the level of disbelief and anger that we at Seedhead feel about this insane decision. There are other organisations which we are angry for (Terra Nova Productions in particular), but PLACE is an organisation to which we owe a particular debt. At a time when we were just setting up Seedhead, PLACE was an organisation who were prepared to take risks on some of the mad ideas we had. Open Source Belfast was an amazing project that really kick started our interest in meantime space and Hit the North only exists because PLACE were prepared to partner with us on it in year one. Just two examples.

But that's the easy part. That's actual STUFF that happened. PLACE is about so much more than that. PLACE changed how we felt about cities and Belfast in particular. PLACE made us think about meantime space in a way translated into Vault Artist Studios. PLACE gave people the language to be able to articulate the arguments which made the Save CQ campaign a success. PLACE showed us a lens with which to interrogate how the built environment works which in turn enabled Adam to make Culture Night Belfast a success in his time there. And so it goes on...

These ripples, this lens, that VOICE is invaluable to Belfast. At a time when finally people in power are coming round to the ideas of place making and a more wholistic approach to public space and planning, the Arts Council decide it's not worth funding the only organisation dedicated to advancing this debate? It's beyond belief.

We stand with our friends.
We stand with their agenda for change.
We stand with PLACE."
