After lunch we were back on the bus and headed to Monteverde. We crossed then lake to shorten our journey but it still took around 3 hours. Cows in the road, lashing rain.. it was certainly a journey !

After an incredible breakfast at Palo Alto we headed off to the volcano at Arenal for a morning hike. Along the way we spotted spider monkeys, birds, a snake and an incredible sleeping sloth. The hike through the rain forest with our guide was so interesting and the views and we got some great views. Then it was back on the bus to the Rain Forest explorer family run business for a delicious lunch.

After lunch we drove north for another hour and stopped to meet Alejandro and his family at a traditional farm in Sarapiqui. Here they stick to the traditional farming methods passed down through the family generations. They grow such a variety of produce including vanilla pods, peppercorns, cloves, bananas, papaya, limes, cinnamon and pineapples. We ate fresh pineapple in the field and it was amazing. It tasted like no other pineapple I’ve ever eaten. After the tour the mother on the farm had made fresh pineapple cake which we sampled with some freshly brewed Costa Rican coffee. It was so delicious I didn’t take a photo! 😅 Check out my story for more details. I truly loved this stop on our journey for an insight into the local values and how they are moving with the times to be more diverse and yet not straying from their heritage.

Yesterday we left Tortuguero and after a final boat ride along the river to get back to the roads we bid farewell to our guide Abel. His local knowledge and experience was incredible and I have learnt so much about this beautiful country. Thanks Abel. Until next time …

So yesterday after several hours of hunting sloths by boat we took to land to climb Cerro Tortuguero. It is the towns highest peak and provided us with some stunning views. Our guide Rodrigo was full of fascinating info and even found us the elusive red frog!

Early start this morning! The Howler monkeys woke us at 445am so we headed off in search of Sloths. We saw the most incredible wildlife. It was truly breathtaking. Our guide Abel spotted things we never would have seen! Just having a spot of lunch and then headed off on a hike !

Early start at 6am enroute to Tortuguero! We drove for an hour through our first National park before pit stopping for breakfast and a brief nature walk at Sendero Trail. Next stop the boat dock for our final stop of Laguna Lodge Tortuguero

Just a heads up if you are flying from London - specifically Luton this weekend.

The Radio 1 big weekend is on 24-26th May and the main road from the M1 to the airport is where the drop off point is! Some schools and local businesses have already chosen to close on the Friday due to the volume of traffic expected.

100,000 tickets have been sold so traffic will be a extremely busy plus its half term! Please leave extra early to get to the airport.
