Today marks the feast of the translation of the relics of St Cuthbert. In 999 after many, many years of being carried around by monks dodging marauding Vikings, St Cuthbert’s remains were enshrined in the church that was to become Durham Cathedral. Here’s a take on his cross that I carved recently on a very special headstone.

After about a year we are back to fix this lovely font into its new position after Perry and son ltd of Fontmell Magna have skilfully completed the work in the area - they have made sure that the baptismal water flows back into the church foundations as tradition dictates … thanks in no small measure to Chris Daniels and Rod Brook . Beautiful Purbeck stone from around the base and complete flooring - stunningly beautiful !

Helped .evans63 fix a window I recently worked into a cottage in NW Wiltshire in the that appears in seams 150 yards up the road historically quarried as well as kilned into lime in the beautiful lime kilns that still stand … Robin skilfully refixed all this in the rangework around the finished window …. .evans63 for dedicated and skilful building / fixing work

Had a great day out yesterday at St Marys Dinton refixing Rob Hawes’ lovingly repaired and doweled 18 C headstones .
Watched clouds of Yew tree pollen ‘smoke’ drifting across the churchyard quite something. Impressed by the imprint of lettering in the white softening . Thanks Rob for the opportunity to work with these wonderful stones showing the old 18 C masons supreme skill . Also thanks to the Churchwarden for helping to push the stone trolley up the hill !

Nice to get a double Cill and soon a double head for a mullion window all in some of it very hard so hard and impervious the old quarrymen called it trough bed for horse and cattle troughs where the water would not melt through ….
