We are pleased to announce that we were successful in applying for a grant from NESFLAG Coastal Communities Challenge Fund. We have been working on this project for the past year.

This will be a walking route around the village starting at the caravan park/ beach area then onto Pitsligo Castle, the War Memorial, Old Pitsligo Kirk and Kirkyard, Mounthooly Doocot, the Wastard and ending up at the Harbour. The information will be on modern, attractive boards which we are presently working on planning permission for them to be erected. We also wish to promote Doric so a suitable Doric sentence will be incorporated on each board. We will also erect a bench at the War Memorial so visitors can enjoy the view in comfort and tranquillity and the new picnic table with wheelchair access at the Wastard.

Let’s go for a Walk and Discover Rosehearty!

We are pleased to announce that we were successful in applying for a grant from Banff and Buchan Coastal Communities Fund. This money will go towards our exciting new project - Rosehearty Heritage Trail.

This will be a walking route round the village starting at the caravan park/ beach area then onto Pitsligo Castle, the War Memorial, Old Pitsligo Kirk and Kirkyard, Mounthooly Doocot, the Wastard and ending up at the Harbour. The information will be on modern, attractive boards which we are presently working on planning permission for them to be erected. We also wish to promote Doric so a suitable Doric sentence will be incorporated on each board and finally we hope to erect a bench at the War Memorial so visitors can enjoy the view in comfort and tranquillity.

Sir Walter Murdoch

In Australia there is a university and suburb of Perth named after a boy from Rosehearty.

Walter Murdoch was the youngest son in a family of 14. His father James had been the parish minister in Rosehearty for over 30 years when the whole family (including Walter who was 10 at the time) emigrated to Australia.

Walter became a teacher, journalist, University Chancellor, and extremely popular writer and broadcaster.

He was knighted in 1965

Near the end of his long life the Premier of Western Australia phoned him up to tell him that they were going to name a new university after him.

“Well it had better be a good one” said Sir Walter.

Murdoch University was inaugurated on the 17th of September 1974, the date was chosen because it would have been Sir Walter’s 100th birthday.

Murdoch University now has 18,000 students with campuses in Perth, Singapore and Dubai.

The Main Campus is in Perth around 6 km from the Perth City Centre.

To get there you have to catch a train on the Mandurah Line and get off at the 4th stop, Murdoch.

Getting off at the Murdoch Train station you climb the stairs to the Murdoch Bus Station.

Then you catch a bus which goes along Murdoch Drive and within 5 minutes you are at Murdoch University.

At the Library at Murdoch University there is a “Sir Walter Murdoch” Historical Walk with information boards, and photographs and artefacts telling the story of the man they named the university after.

Sir Walter and members of his family made several visits beck to Rosehearty over the years.
