Duke Road Race Rankings A NEW ERA FOR ROAD RACING’S TOP SERIES It was confirmed that this year there will 26 events on the schedule, which runs from April to November.

The 2011 Duke Road Race Rankings is launched

The Duke Road Race Rankings enters a new era in 2011 – not only will the 10th winner of the annual series be crowned, there will also be a brand new trophy awarded. The 2011 series was officially launched in the Isle of Man on Friday at the media night organised by the Southern 100 Club, organisers of racing at the Billown Circuit. As ever, the Duke Ro

ad Race Rankings calendar includes a mix of the best-known international events – including the Isle of Man TT, Macau Grand Prix, North West 200 and Ulster Grand Prix – as well as leading national events in Ireland and Northern Ireland and races at Oliver’s Mount, Scarborough. The Rankings is the only series which measures performance across the entire road racing season, effectively creating a ‘championship’ for those dedicated to competing ‘between the hedges’. The series was created by Duke Marketing and first run in 2002, when road racing veteran Ian Lougher took the title – his first of three, so far. The aim was to give recognition to racers who are committed to the roads. While the ‘big’ International meetings are included, anyone aiming to top the Duke Road Race Rankings must also compete at events like Cookstown, the Skerries and Killalane. Attending as many meetings as possible is demanding, both physically and financially, and the Duke Road Race Rankings was designed to pay tribute to those who show this high level of dedication and enthusiasm for the sport. Over the years, Lougher has claimed the win three times, Manxman Conor Cummins once in 2007, and Dungannon’s Ryan Farquhar an amazing five times. Last year he topped the rankings for the third year in a row and, honouring a promise made many years ago, he was handed the prestigious Geoff Duke Trophy to keep. Speaking at the launch, Peter Duke, Managing Director of Duke Marketing confirmed a new trophy would be ready to hand over to whoever tops the 2011 rankings - the 10th running of the series. He added:
“It is fitting that 2011 marks the start of a new era for the Duke Road Race Rankings as the sport we celebrate – real road racing – has enjoyed a modern renaissance during the decade the Rankings have been running.”
“Visit almost any of the meetings in our 2011 schedule and you will find packed grandstands, full grids and paddocks heaving with top flight teams and leading racers; sure signs of confidence in the future of the sport.”
“It comes as no surprise to me that there is an ever-expanding fan base - even in the USA - and continuing investment in real road racing. Others are now discovering what fans have always known; real road racing produces a jaw-dropping spectacle, incredible racing, pure drama and real passion. And now with modern TV technology, a whole new audience is growing worldwide.”
“It is a sport about commitment and devotion. Just ask the hundreds of riders and teams who journey from Scarborough in April to Macau in November, visiting more than 20 other meetings along the way, to pursue their dream - investing time, money and hard work for often little reward other than the satisfaction of a good result or improved lap time.”
“It was for these people we launched the Duke Road Race Rankings in 2002, to recognise their awesome dedication to racing on the roads, to thank them for the amazing racing we can enjoy throughout the year, year after year.”
“So, as we prepare for the flag to drop at Oliver’s Mount on April 17, we can look forward to another season of great racing. Good luck to all and may the best rider win!”
The 2011 Duke Road Race Rankings gets underway on April 17 with the Spring Cup Road Races at Oliver’s Mount. Once again, all the leading road racing names will be in competition for the title – including Farquhar, who has confirmed another season with his own KMR Racing team and the latest Kawasaki machinery. Farquhar, who was handed the Geoff Duke Trophy at the star-studded Adelaide Racer Awards in Belfast last month, said winning the Duke Road Race Rankings is an important accolade, and a fitting reward for the massive commitment it takes to attend as many road racing rounds as possible. He said: “I am totally over the moon to be keeping the Geoff Duke Trophy. It is something I have always had in the back of my mind since I had a discussion with Peter and Geoff at the Belfast Bike Show many years ago.”
“Geoff said anyone who won it three times in arow would keep it. That is something I really wanted to do. It is an amazing trophy, as anyone who’s seen it knows, anyone would be proud to receive it.”
“It takes an amazing amount of effort to win the Duke Road Race Rankings, I don’t think people realise the commitment it takes. There’s a huge amount of personal effort which goes into going to all the National and International road races and competing in three or four classes – so, it means a huge amount to me to win, I’m really proud to have got my name on the trophy the number of times I have.”
“The Geoff Duke Trophy is at the top of the list when it comes to road racing awards, being presented with it really is something special.”

McCoy Mounts to Top of Rankings

Four race victories including the feature C**k o’the North race has elevated Gary McCoy to the top of the Duke Road Race Rankings Championship 2024 after the eighth round was run at Oliver’s Mount, Scarborough over the weekend of 20th & 21st July.

The Dungannon rider climbed from fourth prior to the weekends racing, where he renewed his rivalry with Wigan rider Rob Hodson who claimed three race wins and three second places to move him into fourth spot.

The fillings in the ‘Oliver’s Mount Specialist’ sandwich are previous rankings champions Michael Dunlop (2nd) and Davey Todd (3rd), both having headed the Duke leaderboard after previous rounds.

Maidstone regular Tom Weeden moves up five positions from tenth to fifth, with Mike Browne slipping to sixth.

Peter Hickman, Dean Harrison, Don Gilbert, and Joe Yeardsley complete the top ten.

There are two new entries in the top fifty, circuit newcomer Bedfordshire’s Eddy Wormald slots into forty-second spot, with Barnsley rider Andy Smart slipping in to forty-ninth place.

Dunlop Takes the Lead After Southern 100

Michael Dunlop’s treble at the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Southern 100 Road Races, along with two, second places were sufficient to displace rival Davey Todd from the top of the Duke Road Race Rankings Championship 2024.

The Ballymoney man now has a twenty-two points advantage over Brotton rider, who retained the coveted Ellan Vannin Fuels Solo Championship Title, Davey also took a pair of second and third places in the Superbike and Lightweight races.

Moving into third spot is early Rankings leader, Mike Browne who took a race win in the opening Supersport race over Michael Dunlop. Mike also claimed two - fourth places in the Superbike and Lightweight races, along with a pair of unwelcome DNF’s.

Wigan’s Rob Hodson dominated both Lightweight races, which with a third in the Supersport, two fifths in the Lightweight and Superbike, a seventh in the Solo Championship and an eighth in the Superbikes moved up one place from seventh to sixth in the championship table.

Four Timer for Dominic at Cookstown 100

A fantastic Cookstown 100 for Dominic Herbertson and the Burrows Engineering / RK Racing team. Action got underway in wet conditions on Friday, Dom managed to put our Yamaha YZF-R6 5th on the grid for both Supersport races, pole on the Honda Moto 3 and Pole in the Superbike class. By Friday evening, the weather had cleared, and Dom managed to finish an impressive second to Michael Dunlop in the opening Superbike race. In the Supersport race, a titanic tussle between Micko Sweeney and Dom brought home another second place, just 0.046 away from the win.

Bright sunshine greeted us on Saturday morning, the opening race for Dom was the Supersport race, which was another fight with Micko, this time Dom taking the win, our first win together. In the Superbike race, Dom’s got a good start and was never headed, winning by over 10 seconds. This race was also Dom’s first ever race at the Orritor circuit on a 1000cc machine. A runaway victory on the Moto 3 brought us to 3 wins. In the 12 lap Grand Final, a thriller ensued between Micko and Dom, swapping places the full 12 laps, Dom managing to nick it to give us a clean sweep of wins on Saturday. This leads us nicely into the upcoming North West 200.

JOHN BURROWS -
“It was good to get back to our local road race, as a team we only live a few miles up the road. Having Dom on our bikes for 2024, it was hard to know how he would fare when we got on the roads, thankfully the bikes where faultless and Dom pulled of six great results over the two days. It's great for the team to start our roads campaign with these results as the NW 200 and IOM TT is just around the corner.
I'd like to thank our team and sponsors for all their support. “

DOMINIC HERBERTSON -
“A great way to start off the roads season with Burrows Engineering / RK Racing. I must admit to being nervous about this weekend, it’s the first time I’ve rode for a big team and that in itself brings pressure, the team never put any pressure on me, but I did put quite a bit on myself. Winning these races has lifted a huge weight off my shoulders. Everyone in the team has been brilliant and I can’t wait to get to the North West 200 next week now. “

There were doubles for Michael Sweeney, Barry Davidson and Kevin Keys with Michael Dunlop, Mark Johnson, Sean Brolly, Darryl Tweed, James Chawke, Richard Ford, Aidan Cleary, Jason Whelan, Andy Hornby, and Nigel Moore all taking the chequered flag on Friday evening and Saturday.

Five Head Duke Road Race Rankings

The 2023 Duke Road Race Rankings Championship got underway at its ‘traditional’ first round, the Bob Smith Spring Cup Road Races at Oliver’s Mount, Scarborough.

At the conclusion of nineteen eligible races over two days Yorkshireman Joey Thompson topped the Duke Road Race Rankings Championship with 341 points, followed by Rob Hodson second ten points down with Gary McCoy third on 282 points.

It was off to the first of three visits to Northern Ireland for the second round, the Cookstown 100 Road Races and whilst none of the top three competed at the Orritor Course, they remained at the head of the pack at the end of the event.

Round three was next, the North West 200 and local rider Alistair Seeley leapt to the top of the rankings having accumulated a total of 359 points, pushing Joey Thompson down one spot to second on 341 points and Rob Hodson third with 331 points. Michael Dunlop slotted into fourth spot with 303 points.

Next, two ‘home’ events for the Duke Road Race Rankings, the Pre-TT Classic Races, which saw a change of leader at the top of the listings, Dominic Herbertson on 425 points, with Alastair Seeley second on 359, with Barry Davidson slotting into third on 351 and initial leader Joey Thompson fourth on 341.

On to the Isle of Man TT Races, which brought Michael Dunlop on top of the rankings with 993 points, Peter Hickman second on 889 points with another previous rankings champion Dean Harrison third with 683 points. Dominic Herbertson slipped into fourth with 480 points.

Two visits to England’s only pure road race venue, Oliver’s Mount, Scarborough, firstly for the C**k o’the North Road Races with Dean Harrison coming away from two days racing heading the rankings on 1308 points, pushing fellow previous champion Michael Dunlop to second on 993 points, Peter Hickman dropped one place to third with 889 points, as Rob Hodson moved up to fourth on 707 points.

The Barry Sheene Classic Road Races, saw the top three remain in situ, with third place man after the first two rounds Gary McCoy climbing to fourth amassing 795 points.

It was back to Northern Ireland for the third and final time for the Armoy ‘Race of Legends’ Road Races and despite being a ‘Michael Dunlop Day’, the Ballymoney rider remains in second place with 1428 points, 40 behind the leader after the two Scarborough rounds, Dean Harrison on 1468 points. Peter Hickman and Gary McCoy remain third and fourth with 889 and 795 points.

Adam McLean Claims Steve Henshaw Gold Cup

Adam McLean sprung a surprise in the top-of-the bill Steve Henshaw Gold Cup race with a dominant victory at Oliver’s Mount in Scarborough.

McLean clinched victory on his 600cc Yamaha by over eight seconds from James Hind (Yamaha), with pre-race favourite Davey Todd only third on his Milenco by Padgett’s Honda, seven seconds further adrift.

Saltburn man Todd was expected to add his name to the coveted silverware for the first time at his home race meeting in north Yorkshire after he swept aside the opposition to win all four Supersport races.

However, despite leading on the opening lap from pole position, it was McLean who controlled the feature race, which was pushed back and run over a shortened distance of six laps after wet weather descended on the 2.43-mile woodland course.

McLean mastered the tricky conditions for a deserved win and now joins Ryan Farquhar, Michael Dunlop, and Lee Johnston as Northern Ireland’s only winners of the Gold Cup trophy at England’s sole road racing venue.

McLean also claimed four wins after notching a hat-trick in the Supertwin class on Ryan Farquhar’s KMR Kawasaki.

Derek Sheils – fourth in the Gold Cup race – also sealed a treble on the Greenall Kawasaki ZXR750 in the Classic Superbike races, with team-mate Rob Hodson winning Saturday’s opener.

It was a disappointing conclusion to an otherwise excellent weekend for 27-year-old Todd, who had the edge over McLean in both Supersport races on Saturday and again yesterday as he wrapped up a four-timer. (Words courtesy James Robertson – Belfast Telegraph)

James Hind dominated the Lightweight races taking three of the four race victories, with Jamie Kelman taking the honours in the fourth race.

Jamie Ingham scored a double in the Support races one and three, as 2019 Duke Newcomers Champion Vinny Brennan took the chequered flag in the second race with rain the winner in the fourth race causing final race of the two-day programme to be cancelled.

The four 600cc ‘B’ races were shared between Joey Lambden (two, Scarborough’s own Paul Marley and Adrian Harrison, brother of Dean.

There are five upward changes in the Duke Road Race Rankings top twenty-five, Rob Hodson climbs 13 places from seventh to fourth; Adam McLean up 26 from thirty-third to seventh, whilst Derek Sheils moves up 32 from forty-fourth to twelfth.

James Hind advances 155 spots from 168th to thirteenth with his treble, with Barry Furber slotting into twenty-first, up from 54th.

Jamie Ingham double, plus a second, third and two ninth places brings him as a new entry and slips into thirty-second place.

The racing barber, Vinny Brennan makes the highest leap up a massive 184 positions from 228th to forty-fourth.
