Hillside Equine Therapy Provides support to owners and their horses with bespoke bodywork, groundwork and coaching packages
(13)

I provide an holistic solution that combines bodywork, groundwork and coaching to ensure the best outcome for both horse and owner. I achieve this by identifying each animals and owners individual needs and by working in conjunction with other Equine facilitators (Farriers, Dentists, Vets etc). Combining my own practical experience of the equine world along with my qualifications, I strongly belie

ve that all horses and ponies perform better when they are comfortable in their bodies and their minds.

โ€œFirst you go with them, then they go with you, then you go together โ€œ.
~Ray Hunt

The first step of that is about giving up control, which I think is one of hardest things for people do, with horses and with life.

Will you join me? I have just written to my local MP to ask them to take action and ensure the UK Government takes the first step in stopping the trade in horses being smuggled abroad to slaughter.

A picture paints a thousand words.
This is exactly what I try to explain to my clients when we talk about โ€˜why my horse does x,y,zโ€™ itโ€™s because they are not designed to move in the way that we expect them to! โค๏ธ

"I am a horse. I wasn't designed to bend. I was designed to graze and run (and walk, nap, play and socialize and move as one with the herd) It will take time for me to become supple, loose and flexible, straight and balanced. Please be patient. Please be kind. I am doing my best to please you."

I am grateful for all I learned about crookedness from the late Dr Kerry Ridgway.

Here as some recommendations for useful information because when you know better, you can train better.

Another reminder that horses are not machines, but sentient beings with bodies that are able to feel restrictions, soreness and fatigue, just like we do ๐Ÿ˜Š

Muscles control every aspect of movement - both internal and external. They form the largest tissue mass in the horse's body.

There are various types of muscles performing a wide variety of tasks all working in a similar way. Electrical impulses instruct the fibres to contract and shorten, then relax and lengthen.

There are 3 types of muscle:
๐Ÿญ. ๐—ฆ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ต ๐—บ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ฒ - This is an involuntary muscle which functions automatically. It surrounds and is found in all internal tissues and organs. Smooth muscle responds to stimuli from the autonomic nervous system. It is responsible for pushing food through the digestive system and for the physical control of the bladder and bowel. It is also found in the vascualr and reproductive systems.

๐Ÿฎ. ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ ๐—บ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ฒ - A highly specialised, strong, thick muscle that is fatigue resistant. Beating around 100,000 times a day throughout the horse's lifetime. This muscle co-ordinates the propulsion of blood in and out of the heart.

๐Ÿฏ. ๐—ฆ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—บ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ฒ - There are over 700 different skeletal muscles in the horse. The brain sends a signal to the muscles via nerves which then convert chemical energy into movement.
The function of skeletal muscle is to:
๐ŸŽ Support the skeleton and create movement
๐ŸŽ Maintain joint stability and posture
๐ŸŽ Control range of movement
๐ŸŽ Protect the skeleton and internal organs from trauma
๐ŸŽ Contribute to thermoregulation by shivering

Owners often say to me โ€œhe struggles a bit down hill, but I donโ€™t think heโ€™s in any painโ€

Horses will always do their best to answer your question, no matter how uncomfortable they are. Different breeds will have different levels of sensitivity.

They speak in a whisperโ€ฆ.(some examples)
* A shortened stride during warm up
* A fixed mouth
* A tail swish

Donโ€™t leave it so long that your horse needs to shout about their discomfortโ€ฆ.(some examples)
* Bucking
* Kicking out
* Biting
* Napping
* Rearing

I offer affordable bespoke holistic solutions for horses and their owners.

Today started as a normal day, but ended up being a magical day. ๐Ÿคฉ
When you invest your time in a role that fills your heart with love, empathy and connection and your customer (a pony) trusts you enough to be in your presence and let go.
Sadly no pictures, I was too โ€˜in the momentโ€™. But it is a โ€˜momentโ€™ that I will remember with gratitude each day.

Great day, starting off with a trip to Surrey for biomechanics coaching sessions, then back to Dunstaffange for a Zoom session followed by an afternoon presenting our โ€œRider Biomechanics - Improving Horse and Rider Performanceโ€, webinar.

Great webinar discussing the complexities of rider biomechanics and the need to look at the horse-saddle-rider interactions from a global perspective! Massive thank you to everyone who joined.

Our 2023 webinar series is well underway, like our previous series, this series brings together interesting areas delivered by some of the worlds leading researchers, all with a passion for sharing their research, with the goal of advancing knowledge to support equine welfare.

The webinars come with a 30 day video replay, CPD certificates and interactive Q and A session.

Webinars can be booked onlineโคต๏ธ

How it all began...

My career with horses began at 16 years of age, when I started an Apprenticeship at my local Equestrian Centre. I stayed for a further three years gaining my BHS qualifications and a wealth of teaching experience. From that point I worked within the Equine industry for a further six years mainly with Mounted Games Ponies, Hunters and Eventers. This is where I first witnessed Equine Bodywork and was immediately drawn to it. As much as I wanted to pursue this role, it did not seem financially viable and fell into the trap of office work! I continued to ride and visit local shows and events however the self-perpetuating nonsense of office life began to wear me down. This continued until my husband and I decided to move the family to Cornwall for a better quality of life. It was at this point that my career turned full circle and I signed up for a Foundation Degree in Equitation Science at Duchy College, covering Equine Training, Behaviour and Welfare. My interest in helping horses through bodywork still remained and during work experience at college I met Leigh Jackson (a Masterson Method Coach) who took me under her wing. I continued with my Degree; graduating in November 2017 and went on to become a Certified Masterson Method Practitioner in May 2018.

The learning outcomes and experiences from my Foundation Degree and The Masterson Method Certification have reinforced the importance of looking at the horse holistically; and respecting each horse as an individual. It is not about working on a restricted area of the body, itโ€™s about understanding how the horse uses its whole body, how it balances itself, if it compensates for areas of tension, itโ€™s job, itโ€™s age and how capable the horse is to carry out their job in terms of confirmation and personality.
