Day 4 of Handcrafted Travel Inspiration: The Maldives

Iconic honeymoon destination, the Maldives perhaps need no introduction, other than to say that they are possibly the dreamiest islands in the world.

Fringed by a halo of shimmering powder white sand beaches, the luxurious private island resorts which are scattered across this archipelago lying in the middle of the Indian Ocean are renowned for the upscale hospitality that they offer to their discerning guests.

From lavish over-water villas with glass floors for viewing the tropical marine life below, to luxe underwater restaurants serving some of the finest dishes found anywhere in the world, the Maldives exists in a class all of its own.

I have visited the Maldives and recommend it if you are looking for total relaxation, for switching off, and for rejuvenating. It’s a fantastic destination for couples, honeymooners and families, particularly for those who enjoy water sports and that barefoot luxury vibe.

Day 3 of Handcrafted Travel Inspiration: South Africa

Surrounded by two great oceans, South Africa is one of the most diverse and visually stunning countries on Earth, offering sights, sounds and possibilities few destinations can rival.

The ‘Rainbow Nation’ certainly offers a kaleidoscope of experiences. From award-winning vineyards to wildlife lodges, from whale watching to world class beaches, from desert to Garden Route, there is literally something for everyone in this, my favourite destination. With twenty national parks, ten World Heritage Sites and 1,700 miles of coastline to choose from, I will use my expertise to craft a holiday for you that’s just right, one that leaves you with wonderful memories.

I’ve been visiting South Africa for almost 20 years. It’s a country very dear to my heart as it’s where I spent the first six weeks of our extended honeymoon back in 2006. I’ve been back on several occasions, criss-crossing the entire nation by car, jeep and luxury train.

I’ve enjoyed wonderful South African hospitality whether that’s staying at the sumptuous Sabi Sabi (arguably the finest safari lodge on the continent) through to spending a couple of brilliant nights at an uber-cool hipster hotel exploring the artistic neighbourhood of the Maboneng Precinct in Johannesburg. Accommodation is plentiful and will suit a variety of tastes.

Day 2 of Handcrafted Travel Inspiration: Japan

A truly extraordinary country, a journey through Japan will reveal a fascinating culture where cutting-edge innovation co-exists with a deep reverence for tradition.

From futuristic, pulsating Tokyo to the ancient, spiritual calm of Kyoto, you will experience a unique mixture of uber-cool technology, meditative landscaped gardens, off-the-scale cleanliness, politeness and efficiency, and visit Shinto shrines and Sh**un castles dating back centuries.

Despite how highly developed this island nation is, Japan cherishes its time-honoured customs something reflected in its incredible cuisine, and one of the country’s favourite pastimes, bathing in hot volcanic springs which are dotted all over the mountainous spine.

I’ve arranged several trips to Japan this year, including one for Ash and his two brothers. A few of their many highlights from their 2-week tour were seeing Mount Fuji in all her glory on three different days; visiting Nara, one of the ancient capitals of Japan where they saw the gigantic Todai-ji Temple; doing a guided bicycle tour of the ancient sites of Kyoto; going on a street food tour in Osaka; riding the Bullet Train; visiting ‘ground zero’ in Hiroshima; experiencing the vastness of Tokyo from high up on a skyscraper’s viewing platform; and doing a tour in Nikko of a renowned small batch sake brewery.

I arranged private tours throughout so they got a personalised insider’s perspective on the places visited and had the opportunity to eat at local eateries which those on group tours often miss.

When it comes to accommodation, Japan is blessed with many luxury modern hotels, but I would recommend spending at least one night in a ryokan (a traditional inn) to experience a long lost way of life.

Although 2-weeks is a good amount of time to spend on a first trip to Japan, there’s so much to see and do there, you will probably feel you have only scratched the surface of it.

Part of the uniqueness of the Travel Counsellors annual conference is the quality and range of guest speakers.

Every year conference has a unifying theme, and for this, our 30th anniversary, the theme was all about ‘going beyond’ - something which we as Travel Counsellors exemplify every single day in the care, attention and personalised service we provide to our clients around the world.

A few highlights for me were:

- formerly Google X Chief Business Officer and now bestselling author whose goal, following the untimely death of his son, is to make 1 billion people happy.

- a futurologist, who gave us an insight into the future of travel both in the near and long term. I was intrigued by his vision for space tourism, zero queues at airports (wouldn’t that be amazing?) and the trend towards luxurious slow travel.

whose inspiring story of resilience, never giving up, and rebuilding, is a great lesson for entrepreneurs like me everywhere.

- music legend and all-round cool guy, who, amongst many other nuggets from his crazy life story, reminded us of the John Wayne quote that had helped him through many challenges: “Courage is being scared to death - but saddling up anyway”.

- founder of G Adventures, who reminded us that travel is a privilege and that although it should be comfortable, travel at its best takes us out of our comfort zone. Bruce’s belief that travel can (and should) be a force for social good really resonated with me.

(a longstanding Travel Counsellors customer) delivered a mini masterclass on being an entrepreneur, and announced a partnership with TC which will see her imparting her business wisdom to us throughout 2025.

The speakers at our conference never fail to impress nor to fill the (enormous) auditorium with anything but positive energy. With their inspiring stories in our heads, we had a spring in our step as we left conference!

September was a super busy month! I was in California driving the Pacific Coast Highway from San Francisco to San Diego. Along the way, I attended a luxury travel conference in Newport Beach, visited Disneyland, and hung out with my niece in surfer’s paradise, Oceanside (where part of Top Gun was filmed). In Los Angeles, I got to pretend to be Julia Roberts from Pretty Woman on Rodeo Drive, and visited the LA branch of Ash’s cool motorcycle club! Back in London, we headed out on a really fun gin tour of Soho and Mayfair with the Gin Journey and celebrated our 19th wedding anniversary. September was also a bumper month for my clients travels. While I was in California, I completed bookings for family holidays to South Africa and the UAE, and wedding travel to Australia. During the month, I also had honeymooners in Kenya and Zanzibar, a family crossing the Canadian Rockies, a family doing a drive holiday around Andalusia, Spain and another family road tripping through the stunning landscapes of Utah. Nineteen Years and counting…today we celebrate 19 wonderful years of love, laughter, and travelling the world together. From Santorini, Greece in 2005 where we were married by the mayor of the island in front of its breathtaking caldera, through to this year’s Californian road trip, life with hubby continues to be an epic adventure.
