Saturday Sushi Making! Since Mr J’s big birthday trip to Japan last year, he’s become a little obsessed by Japanese cuisine so as a last birthday treat, we headed to the school to learn how to make sushi!

We had a lot of fun during our two-hour introductory lesson, but I’m not sure we’ll be winning any sushi-rolling prizes anytime soon!

Japan, the home of sushi, is well worth a visit if you’re looking for a family-friendly, cultural holiday in 2025. Ash and his two brothers had a brilliant two-week tour there, and all my other clients who have been there can’t stop talking about it! 8 months today, I’ll be lacing up my running shoes for Brain Research UK once again to complete my fourth marathon, this time in my favourite US city of Chicago!

I first visited the ‘Windy City’ as a student on an exchange program, living in the Mid-west for several months back in 1989. I’ve returned on several occasions since, most recently in 2018 when I managed to take a look around the university library where I spent hours studying (!) for my American Studies degree. It’s a brilliant city, so deserving of a visit, I can’t wait to get back there!

Did you know that Chicago:

✔️has 28 miles of lakefront and 24 beaches
✔️has more than 500 public works of art on display
✔️has 8,800 acres of green space
✔️is home to the Second City comedy club
✔️is where the iconic Sears Tower is located
✔️is the starting point for iconic Route 66
✔️is where the world’s first skyscraper was built
✔️is where the chocolate brownie was created
✔️is the location for the world’s first ferris wheel
✔️is the home of deep pan pizza
✔️is where the first elevated railway was opened
✔️is where house music originated in 1977

There’s so much more to see and do in Chicago (which, incidentally, is also the setting for one of my favourite movies, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), you could easily spend several days there before exploring the wider region.

After the marathon, I’m still considering what to do, but heading south to do a drive across Dixieland (the Southern United States) is certainly high on the list!

Day 12 of Handcrafted Travel Inspo: Finland

Finland, and particularly Lapland, is adventure holiday territory but one that can be tackled in comfort and luxury.

The northern reaches of the country are pristine and spectacular, with frozen lakes and sweeping snow-laden forests transforming the country over the winter into a serene fairytale land. This polar scene is made all the more magical by the dancing rays of the ethereal Northern Lights which you could spot from a viewing point in the wild, a glass igloo, or even from your hot tub with a glass of champagne to hand.

Go skiing across this white wilderness or explore further on a snowmobile safari into untamed backcountry. Join a husky dog adventure through a natural winter wonderland or rent a luxury log cabin in the forest, complete with private sauna. Go wild swimming in the Arctic waters of a secluded lake, or learn how to cook delicacies over fire with a renowned chef.

Perhaps try your hand at ice driving, a spectacular motorsport, or take your family to a luxury tented camp in the woods to spend a night around a roaring campfire? Alternatively, embrace your inner child by going to Elf School and meeting Santa Claus.

Lapland offers a lot in the summer too. Go hiking, riding, rafting and fishing in an unspoiled landscape, making the most of the long days gifted by the Midnight Sun. Explore the Land of a Thousand Lakes by boat or spot some of the abundant wildlife - reindeer, elk, wolverine, wolf and - if you are lucky - lynx can all be found here. Equally, you could stay at a contemporary lodge where there’s a chance to see bears.

Day 11 of Handcrafted Travel Inspiration: Cruise

Day 10 of Handcrafted Travel Inspiration: Caribbean, Part 2 (of 2)

Here are my favourite Caribbean destinations from over the years I’ve been exploring this amazing part of the world. There are so many beautiful places here, the quintessential luxury holiday destination.

ANTIGUA

With 365 to choose from, you could spend a year here and visit a different beach every day, the warm Caribbean sea lapping at your toes all the while.

THE BAHAMAS

Made up of over 700 islands and countless cays, with crystal clear waters and spectacular reefs, the Bahamas offer pristine diving, superb shopping and wildlife - including swimming pigs!

BARBADOS

A cosmopolitan playground with high-end hotels, superb beaches and premier golf courses – but don’t forget the party vibes at Oistins Fish Fry!

BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS

With over 60 to choose from, you could easily live out your cast away fantasy in the BVI. Just in the lap of luxury.

GRENADA

If you want to discover undersea wrecks, relax on immaculate beaches, explore rich rainforest and wander through spice plantations, visit this intoxicating island.

JAMAICA

Famous for its rum, reggae and laid back attitude this might just be the Caribbean’s most scintillating island. I love its associations with Bob Marley and James Bond.

MUSTIQUE

For the ultimate escape, to experience understated ultra-luxury, come to this idyllic hideaway. You’ll quickly understand the mystique of Mustique.

ST KITTS & NEVIS

Fabulous beaches, amazing snorkelling, historic plantation houses, botanical gardens, and more – all in one perfectly formed island, it’s no wonder this was Princess Diana’s favourite. I love it for Sunshine’s Beach Bar, a must-visit.

PETIT ST VINCENT

A private island so discreet that you don’t call for service, you hoist a flag. You can only reach it by boat and with no phones or internet, it’s one of those few remaining luxury destinations where you can completely escape.

ST LUCIA

One of the most picturesque of the Windward Islands, I recall jade mountain rainforests and tropical palms swaying in a gentle breeze. Everyone should see St Lucia’s Pitons at least once (and hike them if you can drag yourself away from your cocktail).

TURKS & CAICOS

With one of the world’s best preserved coral reefs, the diving and snorkelling experiences here are in a league of their own. Embark on a voyage of discovery to deserted beaches, small inlets, and uninhabited cays across a cobalt sea.

ST BARTS

St Barts is an absolute gem with show-stopping beaches and an amazing marine reserve. The interior is virgin rainforest while the coast is a foodie and shopper’s paradise. This is an upscale luxury destination for travellers in-the-know.

Day 10 of Handcrafted Travel Inspiration: The Caribbean, Part 1 (of 2)

And relax…the gentle breeze caresses your face, the bright sunshine warms your back and powder-white sand massages your toes…you’ve arrived in the Caribbean. Seductive seas, blissful beaches and sunny skies await as do diverse wildlife and a fabulous nightlife. Plus an infamous history that includes pirates, Spanish silver and sugar. If the world is your oyster, the Caribbean is its the pearl.

In this magical archipelago, the original luxury travel destination, you could walk on golden sands, or trek up a volcano, or while away the afternoon at a secluded beach bar. You could dine at a Michelin-starred restaurant or feast on barbecued fish plucked straight from the sea - there are so many islands to explore that the Caribbean offers near-endless experiences for the visitor.

Day 9 of Handcrafted Travel Inspiration: Portugal

Portugal’s attractions stretch far beyond its stunning coastline and the prestigious golf resorts of the Algarve. It is a country that I have visited numerous times, experiencing its culturally rich cities, rustic vineyards, colourful castles and medieval towns that haven’t changed much for centuries.

You could start by immersing yourself in the intimate city of Lisbon with its traditional tiled buildings, atmospheric Fado music, fabulous restaurants and lively café culture. The cobbled lanes of the old Alfama neighbourhood are a joy to explore, and you can even hop on an historic tram to discover the 11th century São Jorge Castle. For the best hilltop vistas, the Miradouro da Graça terrace commands a fine panorama across the city’s rooftops and River Tagus beyond. A short journey beyond the capital, experience the beautiful beaches and elegant mansions of charming coastal town Cascais, and the eccentric pastel-coloured palaces of Sintra, both of which are easy half-day trips away.

Further afield lie the UNESCO-listed port wine cellars of Porto, a handsome coastal city on the banks of the Douro, and the gorgeous surrounding countryside with its manicured vineyards and rustic olive groves. I loved staying at the Six Senses in the Douro Valley and particularly relaxing in its enormous ‘wine library’. Complete your visit to Portugal with a hop over to the island of Madeira to enjoy its sub-tropical gardens, pebbly beaches and spectacular hiking along the levadas.
