This is one of our favourite places and we are sure the guided walks will be very popular.

There’s a new programme of guided walks taking place around the Kinder, Edale and High Peak area of the Peak District, starting from this Summer.

Following the sell-out success of Walk the Ethels, you can join guided walks up the many Ethels on land cared for by the National Trust.

To celebrate 130 years of the Hope Valley passenger train service, you can join a series of guided walks traversing the entire length of the Peak District from Dore & Totley station to Chinley station.

As part of the Festival of Archaeology you’ll be able to explore the hidden histories and archaeology across the High Peak estate.

Horsing around the Gallery 🐎

Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham was born in 1730. In 1762 he commissioned George Stubbs to paint this life-size portrait of his prize winning racehorse Whistlejacket. It is now widely acknowledged to be George Stubbs’s masterpiece.

Stubbs excludes any reference to a rider, riding equipment or location, painting the magnificent rearing horse against a neutral background of pale gold. Despite suggestions that a rider was originally planned, Whistlejacket was always meant to be unmounted. Free from human control, the riderless horse is the embodiment of unrestrained natural energy, a free spirit that prefigures Romanticism’s celebration of nature: https://bit.ly/2XHs1SZ

Sunny days in the Peak District usually lead to some lovely sunset views, like this one over Surprise View taken last weekend.

Fascinating. Maybe people didn't lock their doors then!

Locked up at the Tower of London 🗝️ Did you know? The formal locking and unlocking of the Tower gates started in the mid 1300s, on the orders of King Edward III 🏰

The King turned up unannounced at the Tower one night in December 1340 and walked straight in, unchallenged! Consequently, Edward decreed that the castle should be locked at sunset and unlocked at sunrise 🌅

I only realised all the different names for a bread roll when traveling around the UK. Turning up at an event with chocolate marshmallow teacakes raised a few eyebrows in the north when everyone was waiting for the bread rolls!

Ah...the Great British bread debate 🍞

The Peak District & Derbyshire has inspired plenty of famous authors! ✍️📚 Here are 5 fun facts about our literary links:

1️⃣ This stunning spot (pictured) is North Lees Hall in Hathersage 🏡 Charlotte Bronte visited here in 1845, around the same time that she was writing Jane Eyre. The Hall became the main inspiration for Thornfield Hall in the novel 😍

2️⃣ Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’ was partly written in the Peak District town of Bakewell which she calls ‘Lambton’ in her novel 🏡 It’s thought she stayed at the Rutland Arms in the town centre and may have based her idea of Pemberley on Chatsworth House 🛌

3️⃣ Agatha Christie spent many happy hours in Derbyshire, walking the windswept moors around Kinder Scout, possibly the setting of one of her murder mysteries! 🔪

4️⃣ One of the first ever guidebooks to the Peak District, ‘Wonders of the Peak’, was published in 1681 by Charles Cotton who lived in Dovedale (now famous for its Stepping Stones!) 🍃

5️⃣ In more recent times, Glossop-born author Hilary Mantel became the first woman to win the Man Booker Prize twice for her novels Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies 📚

The unique local custom of Well Dressing begins in Tissington this week and we can’t wait 🥳💐🌷

This quirky local tradition dates back hundreds of years and sees many local towns and villages decorate wells with handmade works of art called Well Dressings 🖼

The displays in the village of Tissington take place from 18th to 24th May 🌿

Well Dressings are lovingly created by hand by local volunteers using natural materials such as petals and seeds pressed into a clay frame 🌼
