Who remembers this guy? ... and no I don't mean me! Jit Bahadur Gurung, my trusted friend, and guide, here's an update, I spoke to him today.
Now 56, he still works on setting up trekking routes in the lesser well-known areas, such as Manaslu. His eldest son is in Australia(!) studying, his daughter is a teacher and his youngest son is working with him on the trekking routes. No better teacher!
Mane, his nephew, and part of the 'dream team', is still working as a guide.

New Travel Rules ... I wonder how many have missed this?
From Nov 2024 (exact date not confirmed), when entering (or exiting) the Schengen area (basically Europe!), non-EU Nationals (that's us Brits) will be required to have their fingerprints and photo taken at the point of entry. Yes, this will slow things down.
This is all part of strengthening the exterior Schengen border.
Read more about this new EU Entry/Exit system on the Govt's webpage.

Last Fri (16 Aug), a flash flood, caused by the banks of a glacial lake bursting, ripped through the Everest village of Thame, causing significant damage. It happened during daylight. Thankfully, there were NO casualties 🙏
Some of you may have visited Thame on an acclimatisation day, or passed through it if you trekked the Everest High Passes.
It has been assessed that there is no further risk.
The flood waters travelled downstream, destroying a 200m section of path between Pfakding and Namche (this affects ALL routes into the Everest trekking region). Work is already underway to restore this. If you are heading this way in the autumn, just be aware of it.
This is so sad for the residents of Thame, just 9 years after the 2015 earthquake destroyed much of their village.
More of this story in this Himalayan Times article.

Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) ... the forgotten base camp? If locations are anything to go by, the ABC's impressive amphitheater of snow and ice is a winner. If you are considering Nepal, take a good look at ABC over Everest Base Camp.
Our article compares these two world-renowned base camps.

Zanzibar îs introducing a mandatory US$44 travel insurance fee per person, effective 1 Sep 2024. This disregards any other travel insurance you may have. It can be purchased in advance or on arrival. It is valid for 92 days. This requirement has yet to hit the UK’s FCDO’s travel advice webpage for Tanzania (Entry Requirements, Zanzibar). To date, I have not been able to find the exact working of the policy, and therefore exactly what it covers and under what conditions.

Norway's 3-Crowns ... if you don't like heights, don't bother! Even so, you can't help but admire these iconic rock formations in Norway. Two of them are shown here by our clients who are there right now. The Troll's Tongue (Trolltunga) and Kjerag Bolten are shown here, and yes, that boulder is as exposed as it looks with a very long drop underneath it. There are no fences!

Kilimanjaro 360° Cycle ... if you love adventure and seeing animals in their natural habitat (wild), this ride is for you. The early days ride through migration corridors so there are abundant animals (nothing dangerous!). This couple chose their dates to suit and extended their time in Tanzania to enjoy some safari time and are now in Zanzibar.
This adventure suits small groups, families, private tours, and charities. Don't forget e-bikes are available.

Yorkshire 3 Peaks ... in the aftermath of this event, a huge thank you to all of the fundraisers who gave up their time to challenge themselves in return for donations to Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, a great charity providing a vital service to the wider county community.
The Yorkshire 3 Peaks is arguably tougher than the National 3 Peaks. There is little time to rest for the continuous 24-mile route. But then there's the secret weapon - the infamous homemade 'Travel and Trek flapjack'. You can't eat just one!
Medals well deserved and also supporting the Yorkshire Dales Authority in maintaining the public footpaths.

Yorkshire 3 Peaks ... what a day, what a challenge, what a team, awesome. Here's the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance team at the finish of what was a tough challenge yesterday (Sun). 24 miles, 5000 of climb, 12 hrs. The word 'underestimated' was by far the most used to describe this challenge by the team, which started in the rain and just 20m visibility. More images tomorrow.

We wish the 19-strong group from Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance the very best of luck on Sunday as they take on the Yorkshire 3 Peaks. We will be there as the support team, ensuring they have all they need to keep going over the 24-mile circuit.

Kilimanjaro 360° Cycle ... the final day was a 'mudfest' with the overnight rain taking its toll on the soft tracks. But as ever, a change of plan was possible to extract from what became impossible riding conditions. Despite the expression, this pair absolutely loved the circuit and are looking forward to the next phase of the adventure.

BBC journalists joined Wigan & Leigh Hospice on their charity climb up Snowdon for Sunrise last week, one that we were privileged to host. Behind every charity trek or event, there is a story that inevitably unfolds and this was no exception.

Kilimanjaro 360° Cycle ... this adventure got underway a few days ago, and by now they'll be on the north side of the mountain. Last night (Mon, see their location on the map below), they had reached a beautiful night stop having seen wild Gazelle, Giraffe, and Zebra on the ride. More images and news tomorrow night.

Have you ever had a charity challenge cancelled by your facilitator? (not Covid) ... frustrating to say the least if you've been fundraising for months. It's likely to be a lack of numbers to make it viable according to the company, but when the minimum numbers are 16+, it's hard to take.
I don't know who these companies are (I don't ask) but I would like to thank them for presenting clients to us! We are getting an increasing number who have been let down in this way, and we're happy to help, even at very short notice.

Berghaus Freeflow Daysack Reinvented ... having had my Berghaus freeflow for well over 20 years (it could be 30!), it's no surprise that I'm a fan. Its mesh back system was groundbreaking and others struggled to replicate it. They have just reinvented the same system making it closer to the back but using a contoured method. Well worth a look.

Snowdon ... a superb effort by this group in what was reported to be -4°C on the summit. The great image shows the complete lack of ambient light at the halfway house, and the beautiful swirling cloud on the descent. Sadly, the sun didn't show itself on this occasion. Travel and Trek - Who We Are...

That child you see (centre) is 8 years old. She’s mesmerised by the experience unfolding before her, not wanting to move. She’s standing at an altitude of 3200m in Nepal at 6am having trekked up there in darkness. There is no better education than experiencing life itself, enriched by adventure travel. She’s learning, growing, living. It’s too short to waste regardless of your age. That child is our daughter.

Travel and Trek Limited was founded in 2005 by Terry Crosby after a Regular Army career spanning 33 years that included lots of travel adventures as you would expect! An ex Mountain Leader and Arctic Survival Instructor, he turned his love for adventure into a commercial venture and the rest is history.

If we haven’t experienced it, we don’t offer it. Experience is our expertise.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s the Desert, the Himalayas or the Arctic, we love the adventures and challenges that naturally unfold as you travel. The nature of adventure travel is that your trip may not go quite to plan; sometimes they are the best bits! It wouldn’t be an adventure if was all so easy every time now would it?
