Welcome to the Coventry Watch Museum, a unique historical site that offers a glimpse into the city's rich past.

Situated within the remaining part of a Coventry "court," this museum is possibly the last example of a common dwelling situation in 18th and 19th century Coventry.

Our museum is not only a place of historical significance but also a versatile venue for educational events, private tours, and intriguing activities such as ghost hunts.

We invite you to explore our exhibits and immerse yourself in the captivating stories of this former dwelling.

Join us on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 11 am to 3 pm for an unforgettable experience. Admission is just £2 for adults, and children under 16 can enjoy free entry.

New event announcement! To take place at The Albany Theatre, Coventry on 31 October 2024:

TRIAL OF MARY ANN HIGGINS

On 22 March 1831 William Higgins died an agonising death at his house on Spon Street. He was a relatively wealthy man, and acted as sole guardian to his niece, nineteen year old Mary Ann.

On the day of William’s death Mary Ann purchased arsenic from a chemist, supposedly to eliminate rats. Surgeons later discovered arsenic in William’s stomach, and even in his pea soup.

Mary Ann eventually confessed to the poisoning but claimed that Edward Clarke, a watchmaking apprentice who had been courting her, had coerced her into taking her uncle’s life.

Organised by local social historians Adam Wood and Jo Phillips, this recreation of the trial uses a transcript of the 1831 proceedings. Hear the evidence word for word and decide for yourself – was Mary Ann Higgins guilty of murder?

Open for bookings now - the perfect Halloween event!

1422 A Cucking/Ducking Stool was erected on Cheylesmore Green in Coventry, an Antidote to the Scolders and Chiders - nagging women. ⠀

A ducking stool is a wooden frame, sometimes fitted with leather straps to secure the legs and arms of the offender - often chair-like. ⠀

There was also one on Greyfriars Green! ⠀

Later on, it was used to "identify" witches. ⠀

Wikipedia - A ballad, dating from about 1615, called "The Cucking of a Scold", illustrates the punishment inflicted to women whose behaviour made them be identified as "a Scold":⠀

Then was the Scold herself,⠀
In a wheelbarrow brought,⠀
Stripped naked to the smock,⠀
As in that case she ought:⠀
Neats tongues about her neck⠀
Were hung in open show;⠀
And thus unto the cucking stool⠀
This famous scold did go.⠀

Quite often, the same women would be seen on the chair, having not learned their lesson.

Why did the skeptic refuse to believe that poor households had salt in 1849? Because she thought the speakers were just adding it for "seasoning"!

Tonight, I gave the Mary Ball talk to a local group, someone doubted my story and whether poor households had salt in 1849, stating, "I'm not buying it." I explained that I couldn't change the facts.

We were discussing the diet of poor families in the 18th century, which mainly included bread, oats, milk, treacle, beer, and small amounts of cheese and meat. Families had to carefully budget their money to afford essentials like food, rent, salt, fuel, clothes, and linen.

The talk otherwise went really well, and I loved being asked to speak, thank you 😊
