To new beginnings…

93 years ago today, on 29th August 1930, St Kilda was evacuated.

At 5am this morning, HMS Harebell lowered her whaler. Ship’s log, 29/08/1930: “Embarked the inhabitants of St Kilda, 14 women, 13 men, 15 Children.” Later, “Everyone on board. Hoisted boat. 08.02 hrs Weighed. Proceeded 11.5 knots”

Looking back on 2022 we have made some amazing memories & made many new friends, thanks to everyone that visited & our team Go To St Kilda] for making it all possible.

The fuel/energy prices have been tough on everyone, hopefully 2023 will see some normality return & make life more affordable for all.
Going forward we will be offering our guided walks free of charge on St Kilda, as always you don’t have to join but everyone is welcome.

Looking back on the anniversary of the St Kilda evacuation, much of the island still lies unchanged.

Thirteen men, 10 women and 13 children were evacuated from the remote island in 1930 because life had become too tough.

In the early hours of the 4th June 1943, Beaufighter LX798 went missing during a night navigational exercise from Port Ellen. Three months later, the only remains were spotted on Hirta.

It was believed that the plane exploded on impact, and the bulk of the plane went over the cliffs of Conachair into the sea. The only trace of the crew found was one flying boot and a shoe.
