We came across 3 sunfish yesterday. This one was getting a clean from a couple of gulls. The gulls pick out parasites, so it's a win win.
We had an amazing encounter with this lovely ocean sunfish on yesterday's Wild Snorkeling Adventure.
We get to see ocean sunfish, or to give them their scientific name, mola mola, during the summer months. In UK waters, we see them up to a meter across and this one must have been about that size. In the tropical waters they can grow to over a whopping 3 meters in length and weigh over 1,300kg.
We often see them lying basking on their side at the surface. It's thought they do this to warm their bodies up after diving down into cooler waters to feed. They mainly feed on jellyfish and salps but will also feed on crustations, molluscs and small fish.
They can often be seen with a few gulls around them. The gulls will pick bothersome parasites from their body.
An interesting fact: In most other languages they're called moonfish, you can see why.

Thanks to Wild Snorkeling Cornwall - Constance Morris for the underwater shots. These guys are so difficult to catch on camera, so well done Connie.

We've had a whale of a day!
Lovely to see this minki whale feeding not far of Mousehole today.

We don't often get all the right conditions that alow us to snorkel at this amazing location. Longships lighthouse lies about 2 miles of Lands End, last Sunday it was just perfect! With beautiful kelp forests, deep gullies and amazing wildlife, it has to be one of the best locations in Cornwall to snorkel.
Conditions are looking just right again for tomorrow, Thursday 18th July, with great weather and slack tides.
We have a trip leaving at 9am. If you wish to join us please visit our website www.atlanticadventures.co.uk and click on the book now tab.
