🇨🇳 Wonders of China 🇨🇳
Tang Dynasty show & Dumpling dinner
We had the privilege of watching this fantastic Tang Dynasty show while devouring tasty dumplings, one of Xi'an’s specialty dishes. Xi'an, previously known as Chang’an, was an important cultural and historical centre in not only China but in the known-world. The Tang Dynasty dancing show is an exciting exponent of this prosperous society and keeps alive the splendour of this period.
It was one of the unforgettable thing we did in China, learning some insight of Xi'an’s rich cultural and culinary heritage in 3-hour tour. There are five scenes in total with live music & Chinese folk dance, telling the story of the Dynasty's only-ever Empress, Wu Ze Tian. Through her life story, we also got to learn about the culture, military history, and religion of the Tang Dynasty. These dances, and music were used in ritual prayer for a good harvest and better life during the ancient times. The show, the costumes and set designs were out of this world.
This is hosted at the legendary Tang Dynasty Palace, a leading entertainment & restaurant in Xi'an. Founded in 1988, the theater has been a stage for many famous performances of cultural sginificance.
After the show, the cast will gather outside to interact with their audience.
This is what I meant when I talked about how carefully @wendywutours curates all their tours with unique & exceptional experiences.

Xi'an
We flew from Beijing Daxing International Airport. Nicknamed "the starfish", this airport has only been in operation since 2019. The airport was beautiful and full of modern architecture & technology.

The Great Wall of China
(Juyong pass) @wendywutours
This was such a surreal moment. A few years ago, I never would have thought I would even see the Great Wall of China let alone walk on it! I have been waiting for this moment for more than a year!
Originally built under the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, The Great Wall of China was built by over 6 different Chinese dynasties. The current structure dates back to the Ming Dynasty & over 700 years old.
It is the country’s most iconic sight, the longest man made wall in the world and was used as a fortification against northern nomadic tribes. It stretches through the northern countryside from the Gobi Desert in the west into the Bohai Sea in the east. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
Do you know that the Great Wall is not a single structured wall? It's a series of fortifications including towers, fortresses along the wall, together formed an incredible defence system in those days. There are many sections of the Great Wall near Beijing, each one is unique. The one we went was Juyongguan Great Wall.
We set off early that morning to avoid the crowds and drove approximately 2 hours out of the city to the Juyong Pass. Built to defend Beijing, it is considered as the north gateway to Beijing with its14 watchtowers. Besides, there are less tourists in this part of the Wall. This is a closed loop with a length of about 4km. The visitors can either do the west part or east part.
I wasted the first 20min taking videos for the gram! Then went up to the next tower, before nearly collapsing! Hiking the Juyongguan Great Wall was challenging! This hike was not easy at all because it is steep and wild. You’re also exposed to the weather. I only just realised how unhealthy I was. Harini hiked up to the next two towers while I was getting my breath back. The views surrounding this part of the walls are so good. Visitors will continuously hear harmonious Chinese

Beijing
Beijing is the capital of China. Beijing served as the centre for the many different empires with its wealth of history, the ancient monuments and the stories of days gone by as well as being a dynamic and modern city.
Things to do in Beijing
1) Tiananmen Square – It is one of the largest public squares in the world, it can hold more than one million people at a time. It is also the final resting place of Chairman Mao in the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong.
2) Forbidden City – The sacred centre of the Chinese empire for 500 years and home to the Ming and Qing dynasties. A UNESCO World Heritage Site
3) Hutongs – Hutongs were designed to reflect the Chinese system of Feng Shui with 4 hutongs joining together to make a courtyard in the middle, known as Siheyuan.
4) Temple of Heaven – Set in a 267-hectare park is aperfect examples of Ming architecture, created as a place of worship for the Emperors.
5) Jade Factory for some shopping experience. Understand how to tell if jade is real or fake.
6) Summer Palace - The former holiday retreat of the Qing emperors, the Summer Palace is a stunning example of Chinese garden style. It is home to a stunning Marble Boat and the Long Corridor, one of the longest outdoor passageways in the world.
7) The Great Wall of China - There will be a seperate post about this.

🇨🇳 Wonders of China 🇨🇳
Before I start sharing our experience, I must share how wonderful @wendywutours was organising this tour.
In Summer last year, China announced that applicants who apply for single entry visa will no longer require to appear in person or provide biometrics in London. This made our visa process very easy. I completed the online application, printed it out and sent it to DJS visa services and got the passport back within 2 weeks. Chinese visa application is very long and complicated! You will need information from your work history to detailed itinerary of the trip as well as a specific sized photo! Luckily, all the relevant details were sent to us by Wendy Wu well in advance. When we arrived in Beijing, we had to provide our fingerprints & fill in another lengthy form for immigration clearance.
Raymond, our national escort who was with us throughout the trip was funny, well informed and VERY PROFESSIONAL! He was very thorough in every details. We had to get 3 internal flights and an express train during our stay. Raymond would give every single information in detail, stay with us to get the boarding passes & get through the security, then would join us. We also had city guides in every city, who were again excellent in their job.
The itinerary was perfectly curated by Wendu Wu team of experts. Everything was chosen carefully and covered all the important places in the cities we visited. We also had the pleasure of watching some fantastic, high quality shows too.
Amazing accommodation throughout. All our rooms had 2 queen beds and plenty of space. We've had some amazing Chinese food too. From home cooked meal to Chongqing noodles at a train station to beautifully packed lunches & breakfasts on travel days, all made our tastebuds happy. Raymond always made sure Harini & I had vegetarian options available.
I will share more about these in my other posts too.
Thank you @wendywutours for this wonderful experience.

I first started sharing in January, but didn't continue with it. So, here it is, nearly 8 months later!
🇨🇳 Wonders of China 🇨🇳
An escorted tour with @wendywutours
China was my 54th country, last trip of 2023 and a chance to see the Great Wall of China, my 5th new Wonders of the world.
Initially, in 2021, I booked India Golden Triangle tour for 2023 October. Then at the beginning of 2022, my daughter and I decided to change it to Wonders of China, travelling in 2022 November. However, that got postponed to 2023 November as China was still closed to tourists until early 2023. You might probably think all this chopping & changing must have cost us more, but it didn't. This is the beauty of booking trips/tours well in advance! You are able to lock in the best price, pay just the deposit and have longer to spread the cost by paying in installments or saving bit by bit. And... you can make changes if you want for a very small fee. We paid £99 deposit each and had nearly 2 years to save up every month and pay the balance. And it was so easy to make amendments & adjustments with Wendy Wu withjust a phone call or an email.
This is how the 2 weeks looked like.
Beijing 3 nights
Xi'an 3 nights
Yangtze River Cruise 4 nights
Guilin 1 nights
Yangshuo 1 nigh
Shanghai 1 nights
Harini & I didn't know what to expect! Although both been on an escorted tour before, it was only for 4 days, that too to Iceland. This was 14 nights to a country that is so much different to what we are used to. And I am one of those people who research everything beforehand and plans each day meticulously. But this time, I went blindly. We were worried that we may not be able to stay in contact with the family due to lack of social media usagein China, we were worried about food, so we took loads of snacks and we weren't sure how we were going to cope with a larger group of people, as we both like to do things in our own way! But China 🇨🇳 surprised us. People surprised us
UK Summer 2024
Glasgow
We spent the last weekend in Glasgow. This isn't the first time in Glasgow for me but first time being a proper tourist!
Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland, located in the banks of River Clyde. Glasgow Subway is the 3rd oldest underground system in the world.
We apent the Saturday with my cousin and and did a @citysightseeingglasgow HOHO bus tour on Sunday. We wanted to go to Kelvingrove Museum first, but it only opens at 11am on Sundays. So we did a full circle on the bus. It takes around 2.15 hrs to do a full route without getting off anywhere. The bus waits around 20 minutes at the first stop near Glasgow City Chambers, which gave us enough time to look around the area.
Situated near Kelvingrove Park and housed in the iconic red sand stone building, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is home to 8,000 exhibits, spanning everything from a World 2 artefacts to dinosaur skeleton. From here, visitors can see the University Chapel towring over the trees.
We've had lunch at Mother India Cafe before heading to the next stop, Glasgow Cathedral, Glasgow Nacropolis & St Mungo Museum.
Glasgow Nacropolis is a 37 acre Victorian Era Cemetery. It's believed that more than 50000 individuals have been buried here. Guided tours are available.
Dedicated to St Mungo, Glasgow Cathedral is built in Gothic style. It took nearly 350 years to build. It is the oldest Cathedral in mainland Scotland and the oldest building in Glasgow.
St Mungo Museum of religious life & art explores the importance of religion in people's lives around the world. It promotes understanding & respect for people of different faiths. This has to be one of my favourite museums!
Our final stop was at the Riverside Museum and the Tall Ship. Riverside Museum is home to one of world's finest transport museums. It has more than 3000 objects on display. The Tall Ship Glenlee is 125 years old and circumnavigated the world four times & went fifteen times round Cape Horn.

Edinburgh
Edinburgh is a city of stories, real and fiction. It was an overcrowded, unsanitary place in later part of 17th century with narrow roads and towering tenement dwellings, running from the foot of the Castle to Holyrood Place. As the population grew, the city too grew... upwards. Dwellings were overcrowded with no electricity, running water and toilets. Outside its Medieval Old Town there is an elegant Georgian New Town.
Some places you can visit on a HOHO tour with @brightbusedi in Edinburgh.
1. Running through the heart of the Old Town from Edinburgh Castle to Holyroodhouse, 5 streets make up the Royal Mile.
2. Inspiration for the Diagon Alley in Harry Potter books, Victoria Street is a beautiful curved street with colourful shop fronts.
3. St Giles Cathedral was where the late Queen was laying in rest while 33000 people paid their last respects in 2022.
4. Built on top of an ancient volcanic rock, Edinburgh Castle played a prominent part in Scottish History. We didn't go inside the Castle as there were concerts in the evenings when we were there.
5. Scittish Parliament: The new session will start in August. There aremore public seats than seats MSPs. Parliament sessions are on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday afternoons as they work in their constituencies on Mondays & Fridays. Visitors can go inside for free and there are guided tours available too.
6. Arthur's Seat is an ancient extinct volcano with beautiful views over the city.
7. Palace of Holyroodhouse is at the end of Royal Mile, The King's official residence in Edinburgh.
8. Calton Hill is another beaitiful place for panoramic views over the city.

Scottish Highlands
We were booked on a day tour to Loch Ness, stopping at Fort William for lunch. However, an accident just before Glencoe meant that we had to turn back to Edinburgh.
The tour was through @viator and @timberbushtours The lovely young lady who was our driver and the tour guide was fantastic. She shared loads of information and stories about Scottish Highlands all the way through.
We stopped just outside Edinburgh for a comfort break before stopping near Loch Tulla, a beautiful viewing spot. An hour away from here, we found out there had been an accident up the road. After waiting about half an hour we decided to go back. There are only two main highways that go towards north from Edinburgh. We were going by one and back down the other. We were so close to Fort William, so coming back to go by the alternate route would have meant adding another 3 hrs to the tour and arriving at Loch Ness very late. On the way back, we stopped at Trossachs Woollen Mill to see the Highland cows Hamish Dubh, Honey & Baxter. Highland Cows are the oldest cattle breed in the world. They are born and bred to deal with the extreme weather conditions of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.
Then a quick stop to drop some passangers at the foothills of Stirling Castle. Stirling Castle used to be one of the most used Scotish Royal Residences. It is very much a Palace as well as a castle. Queen Mary of Scots was crowned here in 1542.
Our final stop was at Helix Park to see the awe-inspiring equine sculptures Kelpies. They were crafted by artist Andy Scott to pay tribute to the horses that once pulled the wagons, barges, ploughs and coalships in the Falkirk area.
We got back to Edinburgh just in time for dinner. Timberbush Tours were so efficencent, that the full refund was processed even before we arrived back in Edinburgh. Thank you Timberbush tours & the lovely young guide who salvaged the day for us.

Giant's Causeway Tour from Belfast
I booked this tour to maximise the time we had in Northern Ireland. It gave us the chance to enjoy the rugged beauty of scenic Antrim coastline along with other attractions.
Our driver/Guide Troy was fantastic. He kept us awake the whole journey with information about the coastal villages & the area and his jokes.
First stop was a quick photo stop at Carrickfergus Castle, a stunning Norman castle which is over 800 years old.
Then we stopped at the beautiful Carnlough Harbour. This stunning harbour and Irish coastal village has become famous since a scene for Game Of Thrones was shot here. A set of steps in this Harbour was used as part of the fictional city of Braavos.
For lunch, we stopped at the Dark Hedges. This is now an iconic attraction in County Antrim, described as "One of the most photographed and a popular attraction for tourists from across the world". These beech trees were planted by the Stuart family in the 18th century as an entrance to their Georgian mansion, Gracehill House. This avenue has been used to film in Game of Thrones as Kings Road. Our group got a discount voucher to buy lunch at the hotel but we didn't buy anything as we had loads of snacks with us. There is a cafe as well. We were very lucky that the rain stayed away while we were here.
Before arriving at the Giant's Causeway, we had a quick photo stop for the atmospheric ruins of Dunluce Castle. We arrived at the Giant Causway around 2.30pm and as we arrived here it started raining. We didn't buy the entrance ticket to the Visitors Centre. The guests can bypass the Visitors Centre and go to the Giant's Causeway for free. There is a shuttle bus that can take you closer for a charge. We took the shuttle bus there and back to avoid walking in the rain. The Giant's Causeway is Northern Ireland’s only UNESCO World Heritage site and the natural wonder.
On the way back, we had a quick stop at Portaneevey, a look out point.

Belfast
I am in Belfast for 2 days on a short break with my aunty. We've arrived yesterday morning and rested at Clayton hotel before venturing out for a bit.
We walked to the City Hall first and looked at the War Memorial, then to the Big Fish. This 32feet salmon was created in 1999 to celebrate the regeneration of the River Lagan. Each piece of ceramic scales of this fish describes this beautiful city's history.
From here we walked to Titanic Belfast. Tickets for Titanic Belfast can be booked online with te slots.
I have visited Belfast before and have posted information about it previously. I will share the link to those posts in the stories.

March 2024
When the final documents arrived, there were clear guidelines about dress code for the journey, especially for dinner. It's formal evening attire for dinner, the guests are expected to wear their glamorous finery. Other times its smart casual. As usual, I left finding the outfit for the last minute. Therefore, I decided to wear one of my party /elegant saree.
We had our dinner in the Blue Car, where we were served the most delicious food. I finished the first 2 courses without even a trace on the plate. Then, came the dessert, sorbet, cheese board, coffee & cake! Scrumptious! We were probably the last ones to leave as we took our time to savour the desserts. We've enjoyed the entertainment in the bar car for a while before heading back to the cabin.
The cabin turns into upper & lower berths for the night. @vsoetrain provides slippers, kimonos & card games to settle into the night time. The cabin was really warm throughout the night and we both slept very well.
The following morning, the breakfast was in the yellow car. We pre ordered the breakfast the night before. While were waiting for the train to reach Paris, we've had our passports back, someone came into get our additional payments sorted and to get our feedback about the journey. He also offered to let me look at one of the suites onboard when we reach Paris.
We had to wait in the cabin til they get our bags out. Our private taxi took us to Gare du Nord where we had quick lunch. We've had premier seats onboard Eurostar, so we used the lounge while we waited. And... just like that, it was back home after a fantastic few days in Venice & onboard Venice Simplon-Orient-Express.
That's the end this series and thank you for following along my journey. Thank you so much @railbookers for a memorable journey.

Like I said in one of previous posts about this trip, we were escorted to our cabin by our lovely stewardess Eleanora. She was an angel. She looked after us well throughout the journey and she was like a ninja seeking the cabin back to day mode from the night setting so quickly & efficiently!
As the train started its journey towards Paris, we had the kitchen staff coming into book our slot for lunch. We went for the first one, which meant we had to get ready quickly. We had our lunch in the Green Car. Although we were the first one to arrive, they didn't take the order til last, which meant we didn't get served until everyone else had already started on their mains! As it was a luxury experience and they were very strict on dress code and everything, I was expecting the meals would be served together like they would do at a black tie dinner parties. So, it was bit disappointing to have to wait while other have already started. However, the vegetarian option was delicious. Loved the main and the unique Orient Express train designs on their plates. The train stopped in Verona to let more guests to get onboard while we were having lunch.
The scenery on our journey was breathtaking and I can only imagine how beaitiful it would be during the Winter months with snow all around.
We were served afternoon tea in our cabins around 4pm. Tasty savoury & sweet snacks accompanied by bottomless English tea.
We then stopped at the Austrian boarder for a while where we can get off the train. We were able to enjoy the mist, snowcapped mountains and the fresh mountain air.
Then it was time for a stop in
Innsbruck, a city in the Alps that's long been a destination for winter sports. What a beautiful mountainous city it is! The view of the Alps towering over the station roof stole my heart even before getting off the train. Innsbruck is well and truly get on my list of destinations to travel soon.

Orient Express
March 2024
A little bit of history!
The original Orient Express travelled across Europe, mainly between Paris & Istanbul via Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest from 1883 to 1962. In the earlier years, the original route also included a connection over Black Sea.
Simplon-Orient-Express started its service in 1919 travelling south towards the Simplon Pass in Switzerland, with the same level of luxury but on a different route between Paris and Istanbul.
Arlberg Orient Express ran the same route as the previous 2 but then went as fast as Athens. This was the shortest running route with just 32 years.
In 1962, the original Orient Express and Arlberg Orient Express trains stopped running.
In 1977 American James B Sherwood , bought the 2 original carriages in an auction and tracked down the lost carriages to restore them. He relaunched the train in 1982. The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express operates from March to November.
In 2018, Grand suites Paris, Istanbul, Vienna, Budapest, Prague & Venice were added to the train, each named after an European city the train travels through.
In 2023, eight lavish suites with ensuite bathrooms have been added in order to bring new heights of luxury and comfort to the guests. Each carriage carries a glamorous history of its own.
Now, the guests are surrounded by glamour, elegant, luxury and a bit of mystery and an astonishing journey awaits for them onboard.

Here it is.
At last, more than 3 months later.
Not sure if I mentioned this before...I have been dreaming about this for almost 5 years!
(Of course I did! Haven't stopped talking about it for the last 5 years!)
Anyway, let me start..
@vsoetrain rep met us at @hotelmetropolevenezia in the morning. She handed our documents and attached the labels to our suitcases. We were told we can only keep a cabin bag for our essentials with us and everything else will have to go in the hold.
After a short walk to the jetty, we got on the shared speed boat. There were 8 of us on that boat together. When we arrived at the station we had about 45 minutes left before the train arrived and hubby decided to surprise me with an anniversary gift. One thing though, for the money we spent on this trip, I would have liked us to be able to use a lounge at the station, instead of making us wait at the platform.
When the train arrived, we were asked to follow the rep to our cabin. Again, felt like we were getting on a normal train, dodging the crowds and things. No special treatment for VSOE guests!
We were invited onboard with a red-carpet by the cabin and our cabin stewardess with bubbly🍾 and a welcome pack. While we were settling into our cabin, the train started its journey. We left Venice at 11am and arrived in Paris at 11.30am the following morning.
We stayed at one of the Historical Cabins where there is a beautiful seating area during the day which turns into upper and lower berths in the eveningwith soft, luxurious bedding and their own reading light, complete with private vanity and washbasin. Unfortunately, the Historic cabins only have shared toilets and no showers! We also had slippers and kimonos left on our beds with a small note from our stewardess.
This journey has transported us back in time, with its polished wood, beautiful interior, antique fixtures, fine dining, pure comfort and the glamour & elegance of the Golden Ag
