MyCake Financial benchmarking for third sector organisations We all learn from our own experiences. But what if we could learn from the experiences of others as well?

MyCake specialises in financial benchmarking, especially for third sector organisations. Our core skill is finding and analysing organisational and financial data from businesses across a sector, and interpreting it. We have an unparalleled level of flexibility in the way we build our benchmarks. We can work either at a very granular level – Inside Out – or from a much wider perspective – Outside

In. (And of course, we always ensure the highest levels of confidentiality and data security.) We go through data meticulously, line by line, learning from what others have done. From that, we create powerful, actionable insights, products and services. These help funders to make decisions, and help organisations to be more successful. To be resilient. Even to innovate.

It matters because it affects the metrics you run and your reference points for comparison, not to mention the way you build datasets in the first place. Here's our thoughts on why it matters and how we do things. https://www.mycake.org/news/is-your-data-inside-out-or-outside-in

Imagine you’re looking at a single organisation’s annual financial results: in the context of a sector level dataset – from the Outside In - that one organisation’s result could look excellent if they have turned over much more than the sector average. But from the point of view of the organ...

What can we learn from social enterprises and non-profits which have closed? https://www.mycake.org/news/what-might-we-learn-from-organisations-which-have-closed

Behind headlines of the closure of a charity are the details of job losses, the cessation of services and the loss of networks, assets and hope of change. These are tragedies and the fact that we’ve been studying the data on closures is no consolation for those who’ve been affected. What we can ...

Here's a bit of thinking from Michelle Wright of Cause4 and Sarah Thelwall of MyCake https://www.artsprofessional.co.uk/magazine/article/impact-covid-19-fundraising-should-we-tear-rule-book

Right now past data is a poor predictor of the future, but understanding the scale and nature of change while responding to issues and initiatives of importance to funders will be vital to future success, say Michelle Wright and Sarah Thelwall.

How can you make a success of retailing to the visitors to your venue? See p26-27 of http://ow.ly/VSUw50uqk7w

A engaged in 'pure retail' is meeting a community need where there has been a market failure. This means that there are going to be some challenges when making the business work financially. See p24 for some of these http://ow.ly/7pOU50uqk3O

03/07/2019

What can we learn from individual engaged in retailing - sell things your community needs and wants but can't otherwise access ... p23 for more details http://ow.ly/Ic4u50uqk0D

02/07/2019

The ratio of spend on direct costs : salaries is also an interesting one in with retailing activity. It's highest in re-use/re-cycle at an average of 47% of turnover and lowest in community shops at just over 10% http://ow.ly/brLu50uqjRe

01/07/2019

The spend on stock is very different when you look at 're-use/re-cycle' or 'in-venue' retailing within - not more than 10% of turnover in fact http://ow.ly/sEaB50uqjOm

28/06/2019

Looking at the costs of running a which has retailing as a major element of its then the spend on stock is of course key. 'Pure retail' organisations such as spend an avg of 75% of turnover on stock. http://ow.ly/PTXy50uqjK8
