Happy Spring Equinox from Stonehenge !!
The equinox occurs after full moon ! Watch the sky tonight ! This Sunday the Sun crosses the Equator Line heading north. This event marks the beginning of the spring season on the Northern Hemisphere. The Earth's northern part will be tilted more towards the Sun resulting in longer days and warmer temperatures .
Ancient traditions on this day included planting a seed, burying eggs on the fields to bring abundance and drinking dandelion and burdock to awake your body after the hardship of winter.
On the 30th of January 1649 King Charles I was beheaded outside Banqueting House in Whitehall. The assembled crowd is reported to have groaned as the axe came down.
The execution was the culmination of political and military conflicts between the royalists and the parliamentarians in England during the English Civil War,
Today the Kings Army part of the English Civil War Society marched in the footsteps of King Charles I in commemoration of his death. They assembled on Horse Guards Parade where a religious drumhead service was held, a colour was trooped and a wreath, which âRemembers His Majestieâs Horrid Murder â, was taken to the Banqueting House.
We had a pleasant surprise during our River Isis , Alice's Treacle Well and Oxford hike yesterday. As we walked along Oxford Canal we spotted a barge with singers ! They were members of The Oxford Folk Weekend team who are already working hard in preparation for the Folk Weekend next April . There will be theatre performances and Morris Dancing on the streets of Oxford too .
