Throwback Thursday Travel Series: Transatlantic Voyage on Cunard’s ship, QM2 New York to Southampton, August 2015.

We lived in the USA for three years and in August 2015 we repatriated back to the UK. Instead of flying home, we had the opportunity to cruise back home on the QM2.

Did you know a one way economy flight ticket from JFK to LHR is almost the same price as an 8 day transatlantic voyage in an inside state room on the QM2 from NYC to Southampton, in addition we weren’t limited to strict baggage quantities which was helpful with moving the last of our possessions home. It was also a nice, relaxing way to move back home rather than dealing with the stresses of airport travel and coping with vomiting children (both boys suffer from terrible travel sickness when flying). On return to Southampton, we were welcomed home by my old floating office, Protector, ABP Southampton’s hydrographic survey vessel!

The QM2 is not like a Royal Caribbean or Carnival cruise with ice rinks and water slides and we were at sea for the whole voyage - however there are swimming pools, kids clubs, evening shows and activities throughout the day and night, a casino and a range of restaurants and bars to check out. We definitely didn’t get bored on board!

We enjoyed dressing up more formally for special events evenings, met lots of friendly people and had a great experience onboard and would definitely be open to doing more cruising in the future!

Destination Lowdown: Cornwall UK Staycation

In summer 2022, we booked a last minute staycation to Cornwall. We stayed in a lovely converted barn in Liskeard which was in an ideal location to explore the sights and sounds of Cornwall.

A sample 3 day itinerary:

Day 1:
Educational visit exploring Geevor Tin Mine Museum which was operational between 1911 and 1990- the whole family enjoyed this and lots to see.
Land’s End is not far from Geevor - it is quite touristy but highly recommend walking the Southwest coastal path which runs through here to get away from the crowds.
Watch a play at the Minack open air theatre in Porthcurno (the theatre is carved into the granite cliff) - advance booking is essential.

Day 2:
Visit the Eden Project at St Austell- a global garden where you can experience different biomes such as the Rainforest and the Mediterranean.
Pop to the beach for a swim or some SUPing!

Day 3:
Visit Bodmin Jail for an immersive experience showcasing Georgian and Victorian crime and punishment.
Enjoy a cream tea on a steam train on the Bodmin railway line.
Go surfing, sea kayaking or bodyboarding at Fistral Beach, Newquay.

Throwback Travel Series Ep3: Aruba

We visited Aruba as a family in 2016 (we actually did this as a twin-centre and spent a few days in Connecticut and New York before flying down to Aruba).

Aruba is located in the Southern Caribbean and is one of the Lesser Antilles Islands. It is approximately 15 miles off the coast of Venezuela.

Weather: Aruba is located outside the hurricane belt so the island can be visited all year round. Daily weather is made up of clear sunny days with very occasional brief showers.

Official currency: Aruban Florian however US $ are widely accepted.

Capital of Aruba: Oranjestad

Things to do:

1. Enjoy the gorgeous white sand beaches and swim in the turquoise waters.

2. Check out the Baby Natural Bridge in Arikok National Park.

3. Snorkel in the warm, shallow and gentle waters at Baby Beach.

4. Visit California Lighthouse

5. Take a semi-submarine expedition to view fish and marine life.

Destination Lowdown: Algarve, Portugal

I have travelled here twice in my childhood- staying at Armacao de Pera (located west of Faro) and Tavira (situated east of Faro and near the Spanish border). I loved the gorgeous sandy beaches, spending most of the days swimming in the sea and walking along the cliffs in the late afternoon.

When to visit: The Algarve is an all year round destination however the summer months are most popular.

How to get here: Direct flights from major UK airports to Faro Airport - flight time about 3 hours.

Where to stay in the Algarve:

Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo (most expensive area to stay):
Accommodation- The Conrad or Hotel Quinta do Lago

Vilamoura (marina)
Accommodation- Domes Lakes or Tivoli

Albufeira (more budget friendly)
Accommodation- Pine Cliffs, Jupiter (all inclusive plus waterpark onsite) or Epic Sana

Sagres (furthest west from Faro)
Accommodation- Martinhal Sagres

Things to do in The Algarve:

1. Take a boat tour to the Benagil Caves

2. Visit Faro city for the day

3. Descend and take a guided tour in the Mina Sal-Gema rock salt mine

4. Learn to surf!

5. Spend a day with the family keeping cool at the Aquashow waterpark

6. Tee off at one of the 32 golf courses

7. Ride the world’s only cross -border zip line between Sanlucar de Guadiana in Spain and Alcoutim in Portugal

8. Visit the most westerly point in mainland Europe- Cabo de Sao Vicente.
