Throwback Thursday Travel Series: Transatlantic Voyage on Cunard’s ship, QM2 New York to Southampton, August 2015.
We lived in the USA for three years and in August 2015 we repatriated back to the UK. Instead of flying home, we had the opportunity to cruise back home on the QM2.
Did you know a one way economy flight ticket from JFK to LHR is almost the same price as an 8 day transatlantic voyage in an inside state room on the QM2 from NYC to Southampton, in addition we weren’t limited to strict baggage quantities which was helpful with moving the last of our possessions home. It was also a nice, relaxing way to move back home rather than dealing with the stresses of airport travel and coping with vomiting children (both boys suffer from terrible travel sickness when flying). On return to Southampton, we were welcomed home by my old floating office, Protector, ABP Southampton’s hydrographic survey vessel!
The QM2 is not like a Royal Caribbean or Carnival cruise with ice rinks and water slides and we were at sea for the whole voyage - however there are swimming pools, kids clubs, evening shows and activities throughout the day and night, a casino and a range of restaurants and bars to check out. We definitely didn’t get bored on board!
We enjoyed dressing up more formally for special events evenings, met lots of friendly people and had a great experience onboard and would definitely be open to doing more cruising in the future!
