🌞California Dreaming🌞

We’re currently in Ventura having travelled up the California coast from San Diego over the last month or so. From the lively San Diego County Fair to the iconic Santa Monica Pier. We’ve eaten more fish tacos than you can shake a stick at. It’s been a journey filled with beaches and beers 🌮🎡🎢 ☀️🌊👙⛱️🍺🍻

Our route was San Diego > Pacific Beach > Solana Beach > Encinitas > Carlsbad > Oceanside > Long Beach > LA > Westwood > Santa Monica > Ventura

We were deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Rich Manly-Reeves. A good friend of Rik’s, a highly talented musician and all-round good fella. His spirit and music will always be remembered. 🎶💔

This reminded us that there's never a better time than now to fulfil your travel dreams. Who knows when our time is up?

So, if travel floats your boat 🚤, feel free to ask us anything about our trip including where to buy the best ‘big gulps’🥤 (A necessity when it’s hotter than a haberno in a sauna out there 🥵🌶️😎)

Happy 4th July from over here. 🇺🇸Anything interesting happening in the UK?? 🤪🤣😇

Exactly one month ago we were being pronounced Mr & Mrs Rockpig by the king himself. 🎤

While in Vegas we obviously visited the strip and Freemont Street. 🗽🏢🏺🍾🤪🤑

We also saw ‘Postcards from Earth’ at the huge and immersive, newly opened (by U2 and their residency) The Sphere. Highly recommended! 🌎

A glorious and highly recommended road trip around Arizona. 🌵

Our route was Phoenix > Camp Verde > Cottonwood > Jerome > Sedona > Flagstaff > Monument Valley > Grand Canyon > Williams > Prescott > Phoenix. 🌅

It covered the historical Route 66 in several parts. In fact we’ve traversed bits of Route 66 in New Mexico, Arizona and California. 🇺🇸

Monument Valley 🇺🇸

It belongs to the Navajo Nation. It was given to them by the US government in 1864 because they thought it had no value.

The Navajo and many other native American tribes suffered ethnic cleansing by the US government being marched 300 miles called the Long Walk. Other tribes suffered a similar fate known as The Trail of Tears. It was Brutal.

Now, it's one of the most iconic landscapes in America. John Wayne and John Ford shot five westerns here. Easy Rider and Forest Gump used locations here too. 🤠 🏍️

Would you get in a driverless car?

Phoenix is one of the test cities for Waymo driverless cars. We spotted this one on our very first Uber ride in the city. Very Knightrider vibes!

They are part of Google (or Alphabet if you want to get technical). They are all Jaguars (very niiiiice).

Rik is currently trying to sign up to the app to give it a go.

Last night in Santa Fe at our nearest and favourite bar. Not often you see a jazz band The Chachalacas with a pedal steel guitar 🎸!!! They played some really cheesy tunes but made them them sound COOL!!!

A flavour of Santa Fe - Chile Capital of the World! 🌶️

It has over 250 Art Galleries, along with stacks of restaurants and gift shops to boot. It’s a UNESCO cultural city due to the number of artists of all varies - especially folk art.

The Land of Enchantment or as some say the Land of Entrapment because people visit and then want to live here! In fact the majority of local people we’ve met were not born here.

Rik and Gil took a 15-hour Mexican Oven Tour (a.k.a. Chichen Itza)

They were gung-ho about this epic Mayan adventure!

Reality: Five hours later, Rik, and Gil all resembled melted cheese sculptures thanks to the relentless Yucatán sun. Seriously, folks, sunscreen SPF 1000 is a myth apparently. ☀️

Bright side: Spectacular pyramid ✔️
More sweat lost than the Amazon rainforest ✔️ Tuk-tuk driver who offered a questionable "refreshing" beverage (politely declined) ✔️ Witnessing Rik and Gil attempt bargaining in Spanish (hilarious and slightly terrifying).✔️

Oasis alert: Found a cenote so clear and beautiful, it looked like a giant swimming pool filled with alien tears and little black fish.

Valladolid: Charming colonial town that served as a delightful respite from the heat. And enjoyed a marquesita - a rolled up crispy pancake native to the Yucatan peninsula 🥞

Current status: Sunburnt, dehydrated, but exhilarated! Mayan ruins are incredible, just don't walk like an Egyptian (go to Giza for that). And bring all the hydration.

Baggage Inspection 🧳 🔎

Travelling around South America, we never had our bags checked or inspected when crossing any borders. And Rik with six months supply of minor medication.

Having arrived in Mexico from Colombia we checked into our hotel in Playa del Carmen. Rik opened his rucksack to get his wash bag and immediately noticed the contents not as he packed them. As it was late he assumed an airport worker was trying his luck, but nothing was missing.

In the morning, a closer inspection found this note.

On reflection this is to be expected when travelling from Colombia to Mexico with a large rucksack.

I wonder what they were looking for?? 🤣🤣

Desayuno en México 🇲🇽

First breakfast in Mexico. So good Rik had to have two! 🌮🌯

Staying a few streets back from the craziness (and expense) of the beach. Very, very different here from our last visit 18 years ago. 🤑

Next up: fish tacos 🌮 🐠 🐽🐽🐽🐽

✈️ The end of our South America segment 🌎

We’ve taken off from Bogotá and are heading for North America. Three and a half weeks in Colombia in all. And most of it we spent in the coastal town of Palomino. 🇨🇴

Palomino is very much a backpacker-style destination with loads of bars, bands, restaurants, street vendors, cool handicrafts and places to stay. Plus a very cool, laid-back vibe that made it easy for us to keep extending our stay. Similar in many respects to places you find in Thailand 🇹🇭

We don’t have too many pictures of Palomino as we did a lot of relaxing! A holiday within a holiday. But we certainly enjoyed some fantastic drinks here - not all alcoholic. The mango-passion fruit-pineapple smoothies are out of this world. 🥭🍈🍍🍹

The evolution of taxi journeys 🚖

Day 1 (Buenos Aires EZE airport, Argentina 🇦🇷 ): Pre-booked. Airconned to perfection. Cost £17 (not bad, paid a LOT more in the UK).

Day 2 (Buenos Aires 🇦🇷): discover Uber works everywhere and prices are low, low, low. Cost: £2-5 (nice)

Day 59 (Iquique, Chile 🇨🇱): no WiFi so no Uber. Wrote down address and gave it to a taxi driver at the bus station. Getting braver. Cost £5.

Day 97 (Santa Marta, Colombia 🇨🇴): Determined to have the authentic experience. Stand by the side of the dual carriageway like a local and flag down the first bus that has ‘aeropuerto’ stuck on the front window. Cost £0.52 (free aircon via open doors).

Next? Hitchhiking to the airport?? 👍

Heading to the aeropuerto later today to start our goodbye to Colombia! 🇨🇴

One of the highlights for sure was Tayrona National Park. Stunning white sand beaches with crazy strong waves (and riptides!), beautiful rivers, rainforest, and even mountains! The Sierra Nevada is the highest tropical coastal mountain range in the world. And it’s also part of the Andes. 🏔️

We even saw some crocodiles in the rivers. Swimming in the same river apparently isn't a big deal to the locals . They just laughed and said they were "crazy Colombians"! 🐊

On a less positive note, our Airbnb wasn't the greatest, making us reconsider using Airbnb in the future. But there was a bright spot! The lovely lady next door saved the day by delivering us breakfast every morning. Thanks for making our stay a little bit better! 🥐

We’re nearly at the end of our time in Colombia. But the first place we visited was the walled old town of Cartagena. It’s a World Heritage Site so lots of history, especially from the Spanish colonial era.

It was a bit of a culture shock when we arrived from
Peru. Not to mention humid and about 20 degrees hotter 🥵

But the laid back and colourful vibe along the Caribbean coast has definitely grown on us. And we survived the heat with some very nice fruit smoothies! 🥭🍈 🍊 🍌

2 Weeks ago: Rainbow Mountain

Getting to Rainbow Mountain is a journey to enjoy in itself. First, you have to get to Cusco (3500 Metres), an old Inca City that was the centre of the Inca civilisation. After acclimatising for a couple of days, you should be ready.

The best way to get to Rainbow Mountain is an organised trip, you probably could do it in a hire car, but the journey is torturous with death-defying sheers drops for the last two hours of the journey.

The trip starts really early because you have to get there before midday when the weather can deteriorate, so you are against the clock.

We left at 04.20am. A 90-minute ride to our breakfast stop, then another two hours of the most stunning scenery to get to the start of walking the final part to Rainbow Mountain.

The weather is notoriously changeable and we expected it to be cold, wet and raining (even snow was on the cards).

As it happened we were totally blessed with good weather as you can see. But hiking at 5000 plus has it challenges, lack of oxygen can lead to dizziness, headaches and feeling weak. So there were lots of brief stops on the way up. But it was totally worth it!
