Unlike some of its South Hams neighbours, Dartmouth is no one-season holiday wonder. The town turns out in force for the food and music festivals and the annual three-day Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta which encompasses serious sailing events and an ice-cream-eating competition.
At one end is Bayard’s Cove, with its 16th-century fort and stone quay, along with an inn with some of the finest views in the land; at the other is a working model of the first steam engine, designed by Thomas Newcomen, a local lad. In between are half-timbered inns and warehouses, with the regular toot of the steam trains on the Dartmouth Steam Railway adding to the ambience.
