There are a few questions we get asked on an almost daily basis and so we thought we'd try to add a little clarity.
Firstly, is there a difference between ICE washers and Carbon washers? The answer is yes. The ICE washers are not simply circles of carbon fibre. They are a composite material sourced and designed not only to increase the speed of your drag but to negate the need for grease. This means that they offer virtually zero friction when the spool starts to turn without the need for grease. In hot weather, grease becomes more viscous and in cold weather it congeals. This leads to inconsistencies in the performance of your clutch and for those of us who want our tools to be the best they can be, ICE is the answer.
Secondly, Do newer reels with PTFE washers or other "fast clutch" carbon washers etc need to be replaced with ICE? The answer is entirely dependant on what you want from your reels. Carbon and PTFE washers will both increase the speed of your drag by removing compression in the spool (providing you don't have a spring in the cap. If you do, you will need a bush to replace it) however we believe that for your reels to be as good as they can be, ICE offers incredible smoothness, durability, prevention from the ingress of water into the material and also will increase the speed of your clutch without the need for additional grease.

ICE Drag System is now available for Daiwa reels!... We are now able to modify the Daiwa spool cap to keep full functionality but when combined with ICE Washers gives you a super smooth and very fast drag!

PRODUCT UPDATE!! Testing of the Prototype Daiwa High Speed Cap for the ICE Drag System is complete and it works a treat!

The production parts will be BLACK and will be available in stores January 2017.

The cap is suitable for many different Daiwa Reels including SS2600, SS3000, Emblem, Emblem Spod, 5000T, 6000T and Emcast Evo.

What is a drag system?
Wikipedia Says: "Drag systems are a mechanical means of applying variable pressure to the line spool or drive mechanism in order to act as a friction brake against it. This supplies resistance to the line after hook-up to aid in landing the fish without the line breaking. In combination with rod flex and fishing technique, this allows larger fish to be caught than the straight breaking strength of the line would suggest. The mechanics of drag systems usually consist of any number of discs (drag washers) arranged in a stack on the spool shaft or in some cases, on the drive shaft. There is generally a screw or lever mechanism that presses against the washers—the higher the pressure, the greater the resistance."
