Today, it is 71 days until Christmas. Annoyingly (to me at least) there have been Christmas decorations & Christmas food and chocolate in the supermarkets for some weeks already. And soon the TV channels will be flooded with adverts for toys and games. I know the older we get, the more we tend to harp on about ‘when I was a child’ ….. but I do think it was better when no-one really mentioned Christmas until you opened the first door of the advent calendar on 1st December.
For many years now I have been lucky enough to spend my Christmases in the French Alps and while it would be lovely to transport my whole family out to join me, it is magical to wake up on 25th December to glorious mountain scenery. I have (Annie) lived in Méribel for a long time – actually for a very long time and I love the village and the surrounding mountains. But like us all, I am probably quite blasé about the beauty of the area – you never visit or appreciate the place you live, until you have visitors to stay and you make an effort to show them around. For many of us an integral part of a ski holiday is the après – a chance to kick-back & to ‘party like it’s 1999’, usually embarrassing teenage children as an added benefit.
