Just after my sixteenth birthday I asked my parents if I could go Spain for the summer, because I wanted to get better at Spanish. They arranged for me to stay with families in Madrid and Segovia, as well as a christian camp in the rural north near Leon.

It was my first experience travelling abroad on my own. There are few words to describe the sense of freedom I felt during those weeks.

I remember catching a long- distance bus from Leon to Madrid one evening. As I sat with my face pressed up against the window mesmerised by the tangerine skies, Iistening to the album Play by on my compact disc player, a feeling of profound contentment flowed through every cell in my body.

I remember having a crush on one of the local boys and feeling frustrated because I couldn't express myself properly in Spanish.

This trip was instrumental in shaping who I am today and I thank my parents for giving me the opportunity to explore my love of adventure and insatiable curiosity for people and places at such a young age.

Now, a parent myself, I look forward to sharing my love of travel and exploration with my daughter. 👭

Last month I wrote a feature for the .ie about my story from drug and alcohol chaos to creating a sober travel business.

I've often wondered why I've felt so compelled to tell my story, concerned that it was an attempt to soothe the ego, an attempt to be seen and heard. Now I know that comes from a much deeper place.

As so wisely puts it, the universe doesn't tell us "why" when it directs us down one path or another. Although frustrating a times, learning to trust this knowing has brought a profound sense of peace and fluidity to my life.

Excited about what lies ahead 🤘

That's right, Beer to Soberton is a BYOB (Bring Your Own Bike) event. 🤣

There are many ways to acquire a bike these days and it doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. Since getting back into cycling a few weeks ago, I've stuck to a strict budget.

In the next few days, I'll share with you info about my bike, cycling clothing and how much it all cost.

🤘🚴‍♂️💥

About six months ago approached me about putting together a sober Camino de Santiago trip to raise funds for

Of course I jumped at the idea, having lived and run trips in Spain before, plus there's the prospect of being part of such a profound and life changing project.

A week or so later, as I was walking past a local book shop and felt compelled to go in. As I was scanning the shelves for something of interest, a book called "A Slow Walk Across Spain" by jumped out at me.

I instinctively knew that this was a gentle nudge towards the Camino. Life was saying, "yes, do that".

Working with Mandy on this trip has been an extremely natural and fluid process. Plus, I've made an awesome new friend!

The most exciting part is that this path has yet to reveal to us so many of life's gifts and surprises. 😊

For those joining us next October, I would highly recommend Karen Manwaring's book. It provides easily digestable insights into all aspects of the Camino, from the history to packing tips and observations about each section of the hike.

Stay tuned for more film and literature recommendations about the Camino de Santiago! 🌏

Chasing Highs

After ditching the party lifestyle in 2016, I suddenly became aware of the lack of things to do for people my age that didn’t involve alcohol. Fast forward to 2019, I created We Love Lucid. Inspired by a love of travel, culture and the great outdoors, We Love Lucid connects like-minded people in the pursuit of enriching and invigorating travel experiences minus the booze. With a combination of adventure and culture, there’s something for everyone! This year’s trips will take place in and around the Sierra de Ronda, in the glorious mountains of southern Spain but, in the future, we plan to go worldwide!
