The Olmec culture of Mexico date from as early as 1600 BC. A rarely visited site, which is on private land near San Lorenzo, Veracruz is called El Azuzul, part of a larger Olmec complex called Loma del Zapote. On a recent visit I was taken by the landowner to a private museum and got to see two remarkable sculptures that are not known to the public. El Azuzul is famous because in the late 80's and early 90's 'twin' statues of a deity and two monumental jaguar statues were unearthed, now on display at Xalapa Museum.

Located amidst the beautiful landscape of Epirus in northwestern Greece, Dodona was the oldest Greek oracle and considered second only to the Oracle of Delphi. Priestesses and priests in the sacred grove were said to have divined the rustling of the oak tree to determine the correct actions to be taken. Delos, Delphi and Dodona are three oracle sites that sit exactly one degree of latitude apart from each other. They also align upon the great Apollo/Michael Line (written about by C.Rhone, J. Michell, P. Broadhurst and H. Miller, originally inspired by Jean Richer) that stretches from Skellig Michael, through St.Michael's Mount, 2500 miles through many Michael and Apollo sanctuaries before finishing at Megiddo in Israel. Mycenaean artefacts from the 15th century BC have been found yet the cult at Dodona began somewhere between 2600 BC and 1500 BC and arrived with the Thesprotians, one of the ancient tribes of Epirus. Soon after this the cult of Zeus was established but the site may have once been a 'goddess sanctuary' before this.

The Red Pyramid of Dahshur is said to be the third pyramid built by Old Kingdom Pharaoh Sneferu, between 2575–2563 BC. It's red colour comes from the reddish limestone, although it was once covered in white tura limestone (like the nearby Bent Pyramid). In this video Hugh Newman explores the three inner chambers, questioning what it may have been used for. The remarkable corbel-vaulted ceilings and intricate stonework suggests this was built by master masons. The unusual third chamber is higher than the other two and originally had no clear access, with rough-hewn cyclopean blocks revealed beneath the floor.

One of the most elaborate Pre-Pottery Neolithic sites that has come to light in recent years is Sayburç, located 20 km southeast of Sanliurfa dating to nearly 9000 BC. It hit the international headlines in 2021 due to a remarkable ‘narrative scene’ carved into one side of a rock-cut enclosure, partly buried under a house in the village. In September 2024 this house was removed and it has revealed the extent of the enclosure for the first time. Jericho (Tell es-Sultan), famous for it giant walls and stone tower, is located east of Jerusalem, with continuous occupation since Pre Pottery Neolithic times. It had a giant rock-cut ditch/moat, was the first city in the world and was occupied by many cultures starting with the Natufians. The Jericho Tower dates to 8300 BC and is 9m wide and 8m tall with an interior stepped passage which orients to azimuth 290° (or 20° north of west) aligning to the summer solstice sunset illuminating the passage of the tower. Punkrii Barwadih megalithic site is located near Hazaribagh in northeast India. It is one of the oldest sites of its kind in India dating to an estimated 3500 years ago, used by the tribal people of that time to observe the equinoxes and solstices aligning stones to hills and notches on the horizon. It includes cup-marks, a holed-stone and other unusual carvings, yet, like dozens of other sites in the area, is under threat from modern development. It has been investigated by Subhashis Das for over two decades and in this video he is joined by Hugh Newman to explore the site in detail.
