Leiden is famous for its university. Founded in 1575 it is the oldest in The Netherlands, and one of the most prestigious in Europe. It gives the city a great vibe but there’s more to Leiden than the uni as these pics show
Pic 1: Our second windmill of the trip. ‘De Valk’ is one of the most famous in The Netherlands, but will always be known to me as the venue for the Grand Final of ‘It’s A Knockout’ in 1974

Pic 2: This slab is not a seat. It’s a counter for the fish market. I didn’t realise it at the time but getting that smell out of my shorts soon made me realise

Pic 3: The back streets of Leiden by day

Pic 4: The Waag. Every good Dutch city has one. It’s the weigh house to prevent consumers from being ripped off. All very gorgeously EU 🇪🇺

Pic 5: and another view of the Waag. The other building is a Dutch department store, before you ask

Pic 6: more Leiden loveliness

Pic 7: The covered bridge

Pic 8: The Café De Vergulde Kruik (The Gilded Jar Café) is where the red star on the Heineken logo originates from.

The story goes that the massive Amsterdam-based beer brewery liked the logo hanging above the old pub’s door so much that they bought it for the then exorbitant sum of 35 guldens about, €400 in today’s dosh.

Pic 9: Reward for cycling 35 miles. In this famous pub, one of the oldest in Leiden, you don’t just get the right beer glass for your ale, you also get the correct beer mat too. See its details like that which set the Dutch apart.

Pic 10: check out those beer mats. Oh and the historic stained glass window
Pic 11: students chilling by the covered bridge at night
Pic 12: the Hartebrugkerk. Officially it’s the church of our lady but I much prefer to name my churches after adjacent bridges.
Pic 13: the gaff shot. The Fletcher Wellness hotel for those who are interested

Cycling through some Dutch seaside resorts.
Pic 1: for all my petrolhead fanbase - looking out over the Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit at Zandvoort
Pic 2: nice bit of Delft blue
Pic 3: the 1920’s lighthouse in Noordwijk aan Zee
Pic 4: the Van Der Valk Palace hotel. I used to sell this hotel when it was a Radisson Blu and even stayed here back in the day
Pic 5: nice bit of Dutch Bingo - our first windmill of the trip

The highlight of September was undoubtedly travelling around selected parts of The Netherlands by bike with my wife. Armed with a bike, 2 panniers each, and a set of maps showing all the bike paths of The Netherlands we set off from our home in Yorkshire on our totally sustainable trip. We will do everything by bike or public transport - namely the train from York to Newcastle and the ferry from North Shields to IJmuiden. Over the coming days I’ll post highlights of each day on here for you to follow our journey. Here is day 1, getting to our ferry. Enjoy. 🚴‍♂️🚴‍♀️

Much has been made amongst fellow Balkanophiles this week about this being the 40th anniversary of the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo. Today is especially significant for us Brits as it’s the anniversary of winning gold in the Ice Dance competition. I remember watching it on telly along with the whole nation pretty much. One year later I was in Sarajevo as a vodič (or tour guide) for Cosmos Tourama, my first job in tourism. On the coach journey from Mostar to Sarajevo I’d play ‘Bolero’ to the punters as we’d drive down the Neretva Gorge, and try to time it so that the dramatic ending where Torvill & Dean ‘throw themselves into the volcano’ coincided with the coach emerging from a tunnel into the most dramatic bit of the gorge. I managed it only twice in 2 years of trying. Anyway here’s some pre digital pics which I took of Sarajevo in 1985. The first is me with local guide Sanja, and 2 lovely customers from Anglesey on Mount Trebević, where the bobsleigh track is, although it’s abandoned today. The second is of the Olympic stadium and cauldron - note the 1980’s architecture and the Yugoslav cars, and the third is Baščaršija marketplace in the city centre, where I first got addicted to burek and ćevapčići. Think I’m overdue a return visit…
