A clear evening & an opportunity to go and enjoy a sunset.
During a nice solo evening stroll to a quiet part of Glydderau, I bumped in to some aspirant mountain leaders who were consolidating their skills after some great training with Smyrff Merfyn Jones and Dewi Emlyn

Great ice cream, sorbet & pizza at Glaslyn ices - along with the opportunity to chat with & hopefully donate to our local Mountain Rescue Team.

Mountain Rescue is delivered by volunteers who give up their own time to train & rescue people in rural areas. It's about a lot more than mountains too - just recently there was a 2 day search by the river Dwyfor for an elderly person 'missing from home'. The person was found safe, checked over by a team remote rescue medical technician & taken to hospital.

📅 Event Alert: Join Us This Saturday!

We’re thrilled to welcome the Aberglaslyn Mountain Rescue Team to Glaslyn for a special fundraising event on Saturday, 25th May from 10 AM to 4 PM!

If you are a competent rock climber, then this guidebook to some stunning locations has just launched.
Trad, sport, multi pitch, quarries & seacliffs - a massive choice of entertainment.
An enormous effort by Pat & Mick bringing this to fruition.
There's plenty of space for new routes too!

Long regarded as the exclusive playground of the climbing elite, Pat Littlejohn and Mick Lovatt reveal the Llyn Peninsula as a destination for any adventurous climber eager to discover a largely unknown part of North Wales.

With nearly 700 routes, Pen Llyn offers unmatched variety: from granite outcrops and towering sea cliffs of northern Llyn to the awesome walls of Cilan Head and Craig Dorys; from the suntrap zawns of Trwyn Maen Melyn to the amenable quarries of Tyyn Tywyn. With a wealth of both new trad and sport climbs, there is something here for everyone.

Stunning photography, detailed approach maps, accurate topos and comprehensive route descriptions make this an easy-to-use guidebook, and promise climbing on PenLlyn to be an accessible and unmissable experience!

Climbing guides to Central Wales, Moelwynion, North Wales Limestone, North Wales Climbs (Rockfax) A*5 Sport Climbs, Clogwyn Dur Arddu, Llanberis, Lliwedd, North Wales Bouldering V1, North Wales Slate, Ogwen, North Wales scrambles, South Snowdonia Bouldering and Tremadog are also in stock . Climb local and support local climbing guide sellers!! These guides are expensive and I'm making the investment so that you can pick them up while you are in the area you are choosing to climb in - the best area of course!!

Clocks change back by an hour tonight. Here's a timely reminder that it's handy to have a headtorch. As Mountain Leaders, we prefer one with a red light option.
We also carry 2, because its easier to change torches than it is swapping batteries in the dark.

We know we go on about carrying a head torch but it's such an easy thing to do and can make a huge difference - especially as British Summer Time ends tonight and it gets darker much earlier from Sunday afternoon.
Please don't rely on your phone as a torch - save some battery for the phone in case you need it in an emergency.

We anticipate parking 'challenges' through the summer in the Ogwen, Llanberis & Rhyd Ddu areas. If you're a guest at Tyddyn Morthwyl, we can provide some suggestions on alternative places to visit

The crucial thing to know is that there's car park & rude options in:
Bethesda for the T10 and local e-bus.
Llanberis - for the Sherpa bus

So far there's been reasonable parking at Beddgelert forrest.

The police and council are quite keen on enforcement action now, as described in this article.

North Wales Police said irresponsible parking risks lives and prevents emergency vehicle access.

The World Heritage Sites of the Slate Quarries are amazing. They are really worth a visit - there's a national museum at Llanberis, and an fantastic walking route.

Sadly there are some dangerous areas both above & below ground. To quote a member of the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team the area they recently had to rescue people from was 'vile'.

As our guests at Tyddyn Morthwyl , we'd love you to enjoy the world heritage sites, but please do so safely.

Dear guests, please see the note below regarding the use of the Welsh word Eryri for Snowdonia and 'Yr Wyddfa' for Snowdon. We're sure this will gradually become used around the world, but it's handy to know what's happening and why.
If you'd like qualified guidance on the mountains of Eryri or for a trip up Yr Wyddfa, we'd be pleased to help.

It’s official! At its meeting this morning, Members of the Authority voted to use the Welsh names Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and Eryri (Snowdonia) only from now on.

Today is Mountain Rescue Awareness Day - the UK's only all weather land Search & Rescue capability is provided by volunteers.

Visitors will know we support our local teams Aberglaslyn Mountain Rescue Team, South Snowdonia Search & Rescue Team, Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team and Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation, along with Search and Rescue Dog Association SARDA Wales.
Mountain rescue is more than just mountains - the teams support the NHS, police & local communities during floods, storms and when people are missing from their homes.
Here's a few images of the work the teams do. All volunteers giving their time freely, and needing to raise money to fund the team's equipment, bases, vehicles and training.

Please give generously when you see fundraising (& conveniently there's a collection box in the house!).
Stay safe in the hills.

A view from the roof of Wales provided by Wex Photographic when they built the highest camera shop in the UK, briefly, on the summit of Moel Hebog.

Moel Hebog, above Beddgelert, is a straightforward mountain walk &, as a qualified Mountain Leaders & photographer, we'd be happy to guide you up there for a day's hill walking.

On August 19th 2022, World Photography Day, the Wex team scaled one of Snowdonia’s most picturesque peaks to open the UK’s most remote camera store. This vid...

Plenty of local walks from the back door. This one is for historians.

On the night of 30-31 August 1944, a Halifax Bomber crashed on Brinniau Ystumcegid. The crew parachuted out, but sadly 2 died. The crash site is on private land but visible from a public footpath.

A little earlier in 1403, the house at Cefn Y Fan was burnt down by Owain Glyndwr's men. The owner was the constable of Caernarfon Castle, so he supported the King. His brother supported Owain - a divided family.

There's a map in Tyddyn Morthwyl showing these places. The photos shown the crash site and site of the house from the public footpath.

With the possibility of heavy showers and thunderstorms here are some thoughts from some experienced drivers.

On Sunday we are due some rain around lunch time. After weeks of extremely dry weather, this can cause something known as the ‘Florida Ice Effect’, which can make roads incredibly slippery.

It happens in the first part of a rain shower when the oils, dust, sludge and grime all get wet and brought to the surface by the rain, creating a sheen on the roads which makes driving similar to driving on ice. This can make it much easier to suddenly lose control of your vehicle and spin out.

In the past, we have seen an increase in the number of road traffic collisions occurring during these periods, so we wanted to publish this warning beforehand.

If we do suddenly experience rain, take extra caution if you’re out on the roads. Drive or ride safely and be a considerate road user; ensuring that you do not travel too close to other road users, and allow extra distance for braking.

It will be really unprecedentedly hot this weekend & early next week. If you are venturing out, there's some advice below.

Also please remember water can be dangerous with a risk of cold water shock which can lead to drowning. Low water levels also mean rocks closer to the water surface which is a hazard if you jump/ fall in.

⚠️ The Met Office have issued an Amber Weather Warning for Extreme Heat for Sun 17 July 🔺 and a Red Warning for Mon and Tue, with temperatures forecast as high as 40°C in some places. Please exercise great caution if heading out, check local forecasts and do not be afraid to change or even cancel plans altogether.

If heading out, take plenty of fluids (min 2 litres each), sun hat, sun block and light loose clothing. Avoid the midday sun and take plenty of breaks in the shade. Keep an eye on all members of your party for signs of succumbing to the heat. Know what to do if someone if suffering from Heat Exhaustion, and the warning signs of the much more serious condition, Heat Stroke, which requires you to call 999 for immediate medical help. See the NHS website for guidance: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/heat-exhaustion-heatstroke/

Parking to access hills in northern Snowdonia (Ogwen, Llanberis & Beddgelert) is quite difficult at the moment & likely to be really challenging across the summer. We understand that 'Park & Ride' schemes will be introduced for Ogwen & Llanberis, and when details are available we will share them.

In the mean time, you could always plan to take a slightly different approach. As a qualified Mountain Leader, we can take you to somewhat quieter places with stunning views, or show you the skills you need to take yourself. If you'd like to find out more, please email us on [email protected]
