in 1649, King Charles I is beheaded for treason outside the Banqueting House in Whitehall, London. He responded to political opposition to his rule by dissolving Parliament on several occasions & in 1629 decided to rule without Parliament.
In 1642, the bitter struggle between king and Parliament for supremacy led to the outbreak of the first English civil war.

Your first visit to Auschwitz Memorial / Muzeum Auschwitz is a set of unknowns.
❓What will I really see?
❓How will I feel?
❓What will I notice?
❓What will strike me above all?
Here's what I experienced aged 17:
It was truly overwhelming, I almost felt numb. Why? Probably due to the rush of different sensations.
The sounds of wailing pilgrims.
The unbelievable scale of the place.
Being immediately taken into a gas chamber & seeing the scratches on the side of the walls.
I went back 10 years later with friends & my fiance. We were to marry just a couple of months later. When I saw this photo, I was rooted to the spot. You'll understand why I'm sure.

Please carve out some time to listen to the incredible testimony of Mala Tribich:

6 million murdered Jewish people. That number is incomprehensible. That is why learning of individuals is so important.
I have had the honour of being a ambassador. I have met with survivors & been enthralled by their stories of what happened to them & their families. This is the beautiful, warm & funny Janine. Listen to Janine's testimony here:

Today is Holocaust Memorial Day & 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz. My posts today will focus solely on this incredibly important day.
Please take a pause at some point today, to remember that 6 million Jewish people perished because an evil ideology didn't just think about it, they created an apparatus of State & environment to systematically make it happen.

On this day in 1916, Allied forces complete their full retreat from the shores of the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey.
The campaign would inflict just shy of 400,000 casualties across all combatants.

in 1916 the Military Service Act is passed. Single men aged between 18 & 41 are eligible for conscription. Exemptions exist for the medically unfit, clergymen, teachers & some industrial workers. Men who object for moral reasons could be offered civilian jobs or non-fighting roles at the front.

Was it inevitable that I would join the travel industry, creating a specialist historical tourism agency?
When I was younger I loved history, particularly military history. And I wanted to be an explorer!
You would often hear me say, "Daddy, is this an adventure…?".
His reply, "of course it is sweetheart!". And so it began…
If you have a bucket list location in mind for 2025, we'd love to hear from you. Join the adventure.

Travel with Sophie’s Great War Tours
Sophie's Great War Tours is a family-run bespoke tour operator, creating exceptional battlefield tours across France, Belgium and the Netherlands. With an end to end service, we take care of all your needs including transfers from the UK, travel in Europe and accommodation.
Hello all, I'm Sophie your guide. A graduate in military history from the University of Birmingham, I have studied, toured and guided on the Western Front battlefields for the last 15 years. I have built up an extensive knowledge of the Great War and I look forward to sharing it with you.
There are lots of great guides to choose from and other businesses offering tours too, so why choose to explore history with me?
The service I offer is unlike most on the battlefield tours market. Once we have decided together what type of tour you’d like to take, you don’t have to do a thing. Often I am able to collect you from your front door or if not, then we meet at a very convenient location. All the organisation is done by me and you do not need to worry about driving on the other side of road!
We go to great lengths to make sure your trip is personalised to reflect your own interests and family connections with the Great War. Every element of your tour is customisable.
When you are away with Sophie’s Great War Tours you become part of our extended family. Our first priority is always to ensure you have the best possible experience exploring the battlefields: we like to think that our relaxed and sociable approach to sharing history together helps make that happen.
My scheduled tours have a maximum of 6 guests travelling, meaning you have plenty of opportunity to ask those burning questions and to get the most from a fantastic experience.
