Well, the season of 2017 has finally started for me. We had a wonderful cruise to the Outer Isles in some strong winds making for a few fast and very enjoyable passages. unfortunately the constant easterly winds made St Kilda a no-go, as it would be blowing into village bay and making it untenable as an anchorage. We did see a lot of wildlife, particularly the birds which seem up in numbers especially the Kittiwakes. A couple of times we were visited by common dolphins but its a bit early for whales. Weather was unusually damp but the winds were great! The flora are , as always, a bit behind the more sheltered parts of the mainland but the machair was just beginning to flourish. On Eriskay there were carpets of Spring Squill bringing welcome colour to the seashore.

Just about to leave for another 12day cruise to the Western Isles and perhaps St Kilda if weather allows. Saw 1st Basker of season last week off Coll and there are now a few minke about too. A group of 6/7 Bottlenosed dolphins are still hanging around Mull. Flowers are about three weeks back in most places except where they have been sheltered from the cold northerly winds we had earlier. We still have bluebells and primroses about! However lots of orchids - heath spotted and northern marsh mainly but the few slender leaved helleborine on the south of Mull are particularly good this year. Adders about in the sun in the same cliffs area. Last weeks group saw 58 species of birds compared with 61 for the week before. The boat total for the season is running at 102 but we have done very little woodland Birdwatching so plenty of opportunity yet to beat the current best season total of 138. It appears sea eagles may be intending to nest near loch spelve again after an absence of many years. Golden eagles there have a healthy looking probably single chick. Looking forward to this trip - weather looks great once again this season while further south it continues to look unsettled.
