“That’s the villa there, with the guest house next door”. A group of expats were talking quite loudly about a certain Mr & Mrs Clooney’s abode as we sailed by on the slow boat around Lake Como. It didn’t look like they were at home so popping round for the last pod of coffee was out of the question. Never mind! [ 810 more words ]

“If a virgin crosses the bridge, the dragons swish their tails”, so the legend goes. Apparently, Jason, of the Argonauts fame, killed a local swamp dwelling dragon in Slovenia as part of his epic quest for the Golden Fleece. A few of his crew stayed behind and settled in the area, establishing a hamlet that would grow into modern day Ljubljana. [ 1,303 more word ]

Hungary is the epitome of a wild child - brought up in a well-to-do environment but as a teenager subsequently fell in with the wrong crowd twice, rebelled and fell out of those formative years a product of their experience. The river Danube splits the capital city of Budapest into distinct parts; beautiful Buda on the west bank overlooks the gritty eastern quarter of Pest. [ 1,115 more word ]

What we know as modern-day Budapest is a product of a menage a trois. In 1873 the three towns of Buda, Pest, and Obuda were connected by the construction of the chain bridge. However, the personalities of each area are very distinct and although they are now part of the same city, they seem to be worlds apart. Buda is the posh, decadent side, where the art is in galleries and the buildings are neo-gothically ornate. [ 642 more words ]

Have you ever arrived back home after an epic travel experience and just felt ‘meh’? I first got the post-travel blues in 2004. I had come back from India, having spent ten days in the jungle spotting tigers during the day and dancing with local villagers in the evening. I’d had a crazy day visiting the landmarks of Delhi and a quick look at the mighty Taj Mahal. [ 1,081 more word ]

“Orang-utan, Orang-utan!” A campmate was gesticulating wildly/madly and whispering as loud as possible. I was suspicious; declaring that there were Orangutan spotted on every excursion had become a running joke, but this was different, we were just sat around in our jungle camp base. Suddenly, I realised this wasn’t a new version of the prank, it was the real deal. I grabbed my camera and walked along the wooden footpath to the end of the line of huts. [ 1,149 more word ]

“Just don’t smile,” Che advised me. Suddenly everything made sense, I wasn’t experiencing hell in paradise. I didn’t realise that a natural reaction to discovering the wonders of the submarine world was the root of all my problems. After all, I had only learned to swim properly and overcome my fear of deep water three months earlier! I had been advised to learn how to scuba dive by my friend’s husband when I mentioned I was heading to Borneo. [ 1,056 more word ]

Beezie was one tough lady. She lived in sweet isolation on Cottage Island, a former l***r colony, in the middle of a lake near the town of Sligo, Ireland. She rowed herself ashore to swap her potent home brew for produce at the market right up until she passed away. There was a joke that the fish stall would be empty the next day; the trawlers would not set sail as the fishermen would all be suffering a dreadful hangover. [ 1,057 more word ]

If you have ever wondered how a penny managed to find its way into an impossibly small bottle then the answer lies in the city of Sunderland. Sunderland’s association with glass goes all the way back to the times of the medieval monk Benedict Biscop, who introduced glass to Britain when he hired French glaziers to put windows into his nearby newly built priory in 674 AD.
