Packing for India

With our tour to India looming in March, here are some trips for our travellers thinking early about packing. Needless to say you'll be in a warm climate, and we believe, along with October/Nov, March is the best time to travel, it will be a warm but not humid. As with all out tours, you only need to pack enough for a week, as there's cheap laundry services in-between

-India, and the group coming with is this March, will celebrate Holi in the best place to see it - Jaipur. Here is a traditional painting of Radha and Krishna - the deities from which the festival began, together with a photograph taking by Yulia who came previously with us.
Travellers will get covered in colour so what we usually do is take them to a local market to buy a 'white canvas' set of Kurta pyjamas the night before. As it is a Hindu holiday, we arrange Muslim rickshaw drivers to take us by convoy.

and we've quite few singles heading to the sunshine with us this March - and all, so far, are coming out a day or so early to enjoy more of Delhi.
We'll be staying in a very busy market area to give you a real sense of the city (and just a mile from India Gate pictured).
Markets are lit up at night until around 9pm, and if your wear glasses, you might want to bring out your prescription. Stylish frames can be made up (as well as sunglasses) for as little as £20 a pair (that is the whole deal, frames and lenses). There're e also 2 for 1 offers. There's an abundance of clothing stores, bags, leather goods and exotic perfume stalls too. Not to mention fancy covers for your mobile phones...

The Karni Mata temple, in the village of Desnok, is unique in that it worships rats, believed to be reincarnated villagers who will return to future generations.
We take our visitors to visit (optionally to enter) as part of our tour. A walk from the city Bikaner to the temple is around 40km.
Many Rajputs (warrior caste) make the pilgrimage, often barefoot, once in their life-time. The whole area around the village is considered sacred - where no living creature, however small, is harmed.
Here a local looks after the rats by giving them milk.

India, and in just 64 days, our travellers will be heading into the sunshine on a thrilling trip into the Rajasthan desert.

They'll stay in old trader's houses and palaces as they travel along the silk road. Ride camels and camp overnight in the desert and see the magical citadel of Jaisalmer on the border with Pakistan. They'll move south: to the biblical 'blue city' of Jodhpur, and on to the white 'city of lakes' in Udaipur, as well as the Exotic Marigold hotel used for the movies.

Next it's north and to the pilgrimage town of Pushkar that hasn't changed for hundreds of years, before heading by train to the 'pink city of Jaipur to enjoy the colourful spectacle of 'Holi. After this, it's to Agra and the Taj Mahal, before home.

and those coming with us next March (we've 4 places remaining) might like to read this article from The Times, where your host Steve Carver spent Covid lockdown in an Indian palace living with a Maharaja.

The Maharaja became a close friend but sadly passed away this week. He and his family hosted our Exotic Marigold Hotel experience, where each year retired hopefuls from the UK would live in his palace to see what retirement in India would bring. Steve remains a close friend to the family, and we all offer our deepest sympathies to the Bissau Palace. He was a wonderful, fascinating and kind-hearted man.

Vultures - referred to as Asia's 'natural undertakers' - saw an unprecedented decline almost to extinction, but as a result of the programme the numbers are now increasing.

With just 94 days before our tour of Rajasthan, and into the warm sunshine, our group might be starting to think about visas. Yet note that the new online visa system makes travellers wait until 30 days before travel before you can start the process.

We've a nice group coming, not just from the UK but also the U.S.
