Let’s reunite families for Christmas 🎅

All travel restrictions could end ‘very soon’, Health Secretary Sajid Javid told MPs yesterday. Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Javid said traveller testing and self-isolation will no longer be needed once Omicron becomes the dominant strain of COVID in the UK.

He said: “Very soon, in the days and weeks that lie ahead if, as I think is likely, we see many more infections and this variant becomes the dominant variant, there will be less need to have any kind of travel restrictions at all.”

His remarks followed Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s suggestion during a Downing Street briefing on Wednesday that the travel red list and hotel quarantine should be reviewed following the rampant spread of Omicron beyond the 11 African nations on the UK no-go list.

Meanwhile, Heathrow is urging the Government to reduce restrictions ‘as soon as it is safe to do so’ and to allow Brits arriving home from red list countries to self-isolate at home rather than pay thousands of pounds for hotel quarantine.
The airport, which says its traffic is still 60% down on 2019, said ditching hotel quarantine for Brits will enable them to visit family for Christmas.

Heathrow said the reintroduction of travel restrictions means it’s now expecting a ‘slow’ start to 2022, with traffic next year expected to be only half of its pre-pandemic levels.

“We do not expect that international travel will recover to 2019 levels until at least all travel restrictions (including testing) are removed from all markets that we serve, at both ends of the route, and there is no risk of new restrictions, such as quarantine, being imposed,” it said. “This is likely to be several years away.”

The airport’s CEO John Holland-Kaye added: “By allowing Brits to isolate at home, Ministers can make sure they are reunited with their loved ones this Christmas. It would send a strong signal that restrictions on travel will be removed as soon as safely possible to give passengers the confidence to book for 2022, opening up thousands of new jobs for local people at Heathrow.

More Covid Chaos!!
The Spanish Tourist Office has confirmed new entry rules from the beginning of December, which state only fully vaccinated travellers from the UK will be allowed in. The only exemption is under 12s who are travelling with an adult.

The new legislation, which comes into effect on Wednesday, is for travel to the whole of Spain, including the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands.

Spain says ‘fully vaccinated’ means both doses of a two-dose vaccine or one dose of a one-dose vaccine, received at least 14 days before arrival.

Meanwhile Portugal is reintroducing a requirement for all arrivals to produce a negative COVID test from 1 December in response to the emergency of a new COVID variant.

As with Spain, only children under 12 travelling with an adult are exempt from the new rule.
Antigen tests taken within 48 hours of departure or PCRs taken within 72 hours will be accepted.

Israel has introduced a two-week ban on foreign tourists, and Morocco, which had already suspended flights from the UK, Germany and the Netherlands on 20 October, will extend the suspension to all flights from midnight today.

Portugal is reimposing arrival rules for passengers flying into the country to show a negative test certificate on arrival.

Reuters reports the country, which has one of the world’s highest rates of vaccination against COVID-19, is reimposing restrictions to stop a surge in cases.

The new rule comes in on 1 December.
Prime Minister Antonio Costa told a news conference on Thursday: “We have seen significant growth (in cases) in the EU and Portugal is not an island.”
Portugal reported 3,773 new cases on Wednesday, the highest daily figure in four months, before dropping to 3,150 on Thursday.
Mr Costa said airlines would be fined €20,000 euros per passenger if they transport anyone who does not carry proof of a COVID-19 test, including those who are fully vaccinated.
Passengers can take a PCR or a rapid antigen test, 72 hours or 48 hours respectively before departure.

He also said the fully vaccinated must also present proof of a negative coronavirus test to enter nightclubs, bars, large events and care homes, and that the EU digital certificate would be required to stay in hotels, go to the gym, or dine indoors in restaurants.

Those sitting outdoors will not need to show the digital certificate.

Ryanair is believed to be planning to announce new flights from the UK and/or Ireland to Madeira imminently.

The budget airline is understood to have applied for slots to operate to the Portuguese island from three UK and Irish airports.

And yesterday, the flight tracking website Flightradar24 showed a Ryanair Max heading from Dublin to Funchal, the capital city of Madeira.

Currently, there are several operators flying non-stop from the UK to Funchal including British Airways from London Heathrow, easyJet from London Gatwick, Jet2, Wizz from London Luton and also TUI and Jet2 have charter flights from UK regional airports.

Madeira has been growing in popularity this year as it was one of the few destinations on the UK’s original green travel list.

Tunisia changes entry rules for families in time for winter-sun season

Tunisia’s UK tourism deputy has said new rules for under 18s on package holidays to the country is ‘great news’ as the destination gears up for the winter-sun season.
“The rules mean children travelling with fully vaccinated parents on package holidays including hotel, transport and flights are exempt from isolating.”

Under 18s travelling on package holidays with fully jabbed parents will not have to isolate, the Tunisian government has said.
They will still have to say within their hotel grounds and can only leave if they’re on a group or organised tour. Previously, the rules stated that un-jabbed under-18s on a package holiday had to self-isolate for seven days in their hotel.
