Women!

THIS IS TOUGH LOVE TIME 🧡

Men, I'll come to you in a moment :)

But ladies! I've been reflecting on my 16 years in the writing world. And I feel really sad to have to acknowledge that overall it's women who are NOT GETTING THEIR MEMOIRS WRITTEN.

Women continuously put their dreams on hold while tending to others' needs. There are just SO many demands on a woman's time, energy and resources.

That's not to say that many of these demands aren't welcome and aren't things you want to do and love doing. But the fact remains. Unless a woman is working with someone like me, a mentor and cheerleader - unless there's ACCOUNTABILITY - her writing consistently falls to the bottom of life's to-do list.

But no more! I am creating an accountability program and it starts on September 30th. I love working with male memoirists, so guys it's open to you of course - you are very welcome. But this is my clarion call.

Women - your memoir is not just an act of self-care—it's a radical, act. It is your turn to rise up and share your wisdom with the world.

My program is in development but will offer:

🧡Your own personalised writing schedule that fits in with your life

🧡 Regular check-ins and progress tracking from me

🧡 A supportive community and forum & much more

When you commit, you and I will chat about your memoir and how your life and a typical week looks for you right now. Then we'll set your a weekly, fortnightly or monthly writing goal. This will be a realistic goal. Whether you write 500 words a month or 5,000, every word counts and I'm willing to bet it will be more than you're writing now. Then you'll upload your words to the portal so you can see your running total and receive congrats from me and your fellow writers. If you don't hit your goal, we'll chat about what needs to change - either your life (!) or your goal.

LET'S SHARE FAR AND WIDE! ❤️ Hey writers! I am declaring tomorrow - April 20th !!! This magnificent 104-year-old quote comes from the diaries of the brilliant . You can feel her frustration, can't you! It's SO relateable. Now, more so than ever with our phones in our bloomin' pockets, in our hands and on our desks ALL. THE. TIME. Let's share this one far and wide for tomorrow. Let's make it a day when we say ENOUGH! To ourselves and the distractions that are giving us the pip! Let's make April 20th . A day when we remind ourselves and the writers/creatives we know and love, to stand firm in the face of annoying interruptions. Let us FEEL Virginia's exasperation and protect our precious writing/creative time with everything we can muster! It may not be mornings for you. It may not be the 'phone/Internet that's your biggest distraction. But whatever it is that uses up the precious CREAM OF YOUR BRAIN, let us shout in its face (firmly but gently if it's a human, obvs). "Stop! This is MY time. I am writing my memoir!* This is the best time for me and I am creating, come what may! Enough is enough. I know when my brain is at its creamiest and I am not going to waste it!" Let's share and make this a day for us and our gorgeous, knackered, juicy, distracted, fabulous creative brains ❤️

I just read Michael K Williams' memoir Scenes From My Life. Written beautifully with Jon Sternfeld who completed this memoir after the sad and early death of Michael. It was nearly finished but bravo to Jon for carrying on despite what must have been a devastating loss, although I'm sure it did not cross his mind for a second to quit. Love and condolences to you and all who knew and loved Michael. Like many people, I knew of Michael from his captivating performance in The Wire. But I had no idea about his back story, although now it makes sense. You can see everything he is bringing to the quietly ferocious and multi layered character of Omar in that incredible show. This quote from Michael’s intro sums up this memoir perfectly. It’s an unforgettable story of trauma, intergenerational trauma, survival, sexuality, loss, violence, friendship, addiction, community, politics and tenacity. Michael pours it all out. It's honest, heartbreaking, humble and generous. There's the acting too, of course! And the dancing - my goodness, I had no idea. Michael was doing incredible work for his community in Brooklyn and beyond in the lead up to his death. He was a shining light to both groups and to the individuals he always made time for, including loads of kids like him. He made and continues to make an enormous difference but still gone, way too, way too soon. A must read memoir whether you know of Michael as an actor or not. A gift, a sharing, a call to action offered by and with a beautiful spirit ❤️
