Volcanoes Safaris would like to pay tribute to Mel Cutcliffe, founder of IndigoEight Communications, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

Mel was passionate about building a communications agency that created positive change and impact.

She was devoted to supporting Africa and conservation and nature. She was instrumental in helping to promote Rwanda as a tourist destination after the country merged from conflict.

We remember Mel as a friend and for her support in promoting Volcanoes lodges.

Meet the team from Kibale Lodge

Kibale Lodge has been hand-built to a new level of elegance and luxury by Volcanoes’ in-house teams of artisans from the countries of the Great Lakes, including local engineers, fundis, decorators and upholsterers.

The team of 400 workers has been led by Cyprien Serugero, who built the iconic Virunga Lodge in Rwanda 20 years ago and John-Bosco Tukamuhabwa, the site supervisor who rebuilt Mount Gahinga Lodge in recent years. They are supported with careful craftsmanship by Joseph Nsabimana, Head Carpenter and furniture maker, Wycliffe Tuyambaze, upholsterer.

Celine Ishimwe, lead botanist, and her team of 50 gardeners has planted 200,000 indigenous plants seedlings in the central 23 acres of land.

Praveen Moman, Founder Volcanoes Safaris said “The whole team has worked with rare passion and dedication and I pay tribute to their spirit. We look to our in-house team for design inspiration. We work in ‘the barefoot villager’ style, sitting down together and working out practical local approaches to aesthetics, making everything locally, whatever the origin of the design, in the renowned Volcanoes Safaris Afro-chic style, reflecting the richness of the cultures and aesthetics of the Great Lakes.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Virunga Lodge, Volcanoes Safaris hosted an informal conversation on gorilla conservation and ecotourism.

Prosper Uwingeli, Chief Park Warden at Volcanoes National Park, gave a fascinating account of the history of the park, followed by perspectives on conservation and ecotourism by a panels of experts.

Michaella Rugwizangoga, RDB Chief Tourism Officer joined us to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Virunga and to lay the first bricks of the new Virunga Carpentry and Tailoring Centre.

We are grateful for all the participants who made the day very special!

We have recently released a short film that highlights some of Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust (VSPT) unique and special community and conservation projects around Volcanoes Safaris lodges.
VSPT is a non-profit organisation that connects Volcanoes’ Rwanda and Uganda lodges to the neighbouring communities and conservation activities.
VSPT aims to create long-term, self-sustaining projects that enrich the livelihoods of local communities, promote the conservation of the great apes, restore natural habitats and work with communities and institutions to reduce human-wildlife conflict.
Funding is received through Volcanoes Safaris lodge guests as well as donations by conservation organizations and private individuals.
Our new partnership with Empowers Africa as our fiscal sponsor provides a simple way for contributions from US residents to be tax-deductible.

Capturing firsts!

The Fig Tree Trail camera traps at Kyambura Gorge Lodge have captured a wonderful first-ever sighting of a giant pangolin!

Pangolins are nocturnal and solitary creatures that inhabit forests and savannah areas in Asia and Africa. Populations of pangolins are declining due to rapid habitat loss and the illegal wildlife trade.

In partnership with the Uganda Wildlife Authority and the Jane Goodall Institute, Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust is committed to protecting the fragile Kyambura Gorge ecosystem and its unique wildlife.

The Kyambura Gorge is a hidden gem.

From Kyambura Gorge Lodge, take a walk down into a magical sunken rainforest with the roar of the rushing water in the ravine, the enchanting bird sounds, surrounded by black and white colobus monkeys in the trees. We are lucky to have this spectacular force of nature in our property.

Cross the turbulent river on our handbuilt wooden walkway and visit the VSPT Conservation and Community Centre on the other side to meet the staff and learn about from the Kyambura Ecotourism Project and our partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute for chimpanzee conservation.
