Should you Learn Spanish for your trip? 🤔

In our opinion, the answer is YES, you should learn SOME Spanish before your trip.

It often comes as a surprise to many backpackers how little english is spoken in some Latin American countries.

Do yourself a favour and pick up some basics!

Not only is it respectful to the locals, but it will also make your life SO much easier. Your experience out there will transform with some spanish, trust us!

It’s good to think about the situations you’re going to be in, and the Spanish you’re going to need for that.

In this carousel we give you the basics for the following:
1️⃣ Greetings
2️⃣ Being polite
3️⃣ Directions
4️⃣ At a restaurant/cafe
5️⃣ Shopping
6️⃣ Safety & security

👉 When you’re travelling, the more you practice these words and phrases, the easier it’ll become!

📲 Consider writing a note on your phone with the most common ones, so you can refer back to them.

💡💡 TOP TIP: Did you know you can download a whole language onto google translate? That way if you lose signal or don’t have internet, you can still use the translator app (this can really come in handy!).

FUN FACT: Our founder Alfie can speak 5 languages! Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French and English. How insane is that?!

Do you think its important to learn some of a language prior to your trip? Let us know in the comments 👇👇

It’s never been easier👇

👌If you want to travel but the budget isn’t quite allowing it, consider these ways to make money WHILE travelling.

💻Learning a skill such as digital marketing, yoga teaching or teaching a language can enable you to work remotely - so you can travel while you’re working!

🦥Volunteering is a great way to massively reduce your costs, whilst having a stable base where you can really get to know a location and make lasting friendships.

✈️Alternatively, you could do a job that INVOLVES travelling - like a group leader, camp councellor or tour director.

Year abroad coming up?

Here are the Do’s and Don’ts for when you arrive, written by a member of our community who lived abroad in Mexico City 🇲🇽🌵🍸

Save this for your year abroad and send to a friend who’s going on one 😍

THE DO’S
✅ Follow the lights - look down side streets, through shop windows and around central squares. Lights = activity!
✅ Go for a drink alone - yes this seems a little daunting initially but if you’re on your own, people are actually more likely to approach you.
✅ Document your first weeks - write a journal, your future self will appreciat reading back on the highs and lows

THE DONT’S
❌ Forget to reach out to friends and family at home. They want to hear about what you’re up to and it’ll make you feel better to.
❌ Obsess over the language - you’ll practice tonnes when you’re there.
❌ Get complacent - Toby had his wallet nicked so justs be mindful of local customs and keeping safe.

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY
🥳 HAVE FUN!
🥳 Don’t take things too seriously, things going wrong is inevitable
🥳Drama abroad feels far more important than it ever is. Keep everything in perspective!

Ella studied in Seoul on her year abroad and has given a full debrief on the ways to navigate studying in this exciting and unique city. Seoul has a combination of ancient tradition alongside modern innovation. There are few other places in the world where 14th century palaces nestled within skyscrapers and neon-lit districts.
