Here is our Mexico backpacking itinerary for your Gap Year!

1. Puerta Vallarta - 2 days
2. Guadalajara (day trip to tequila) - 3 days
3. Guanajuato - 2 days
4. Mexico City - 3 days
5. Puerto escondido - 5 days
6. San José for 2 days if you like mushrooms lol - 2 days
7. Oaxaca city - 3 days
8. San Cristóbal de las casas - 3 days
9. Palenque - 2 days
10. Valladolid - 3 days
11. Bacalar - 3 days

This backpacking route only requires 1 internal flight, which can be switched for an 18 hour bus if you want to save money.

Each location can be visited via bus 🚎

Mexico is an ideal country for first time backpackers because the people are super friendly, it’s easy to get around and there is a well trodden backpacker route full of other travellers 🇲🇽🇲🇽

Whilst crime is an issue in Mexico, most visitors go untroubled.

If you’re thinking of taking a gap year, Mexico may be a great option for you!

Save this for your backpacking Gap Year trip ✅

In this carousel:
1. Soap bar - so much easier than carrying around clunky shower gel 🧼
2. Packing cubes - tidy bag tidy mind 🧘
3. - quietness is not guaranteed especially in hostels.
4. Reusable travel bottles - decant your products into theee so you’re carrying less around around with you. Every gram makes a difference and adds up!
5. Portable charger 🔋- feel like this almost goes without saying? Can’t do much these days without your phone!
6. Multi length cables - both long and short for different situations (and gives you a spare for when you inevitably lose one)
7. Cable bag - more of a nice to have, to keep things tidy.
8. Travel pillow 🛌- feel like people always regret not bringing one of these.
9. A kindle - so much more convenient than books! Super low cost if you buy 2nd hand.
10. Air tag - attach to your luggage so you never need to worry about it getting lost 😊

We’ll go first ⬇️

Here are some of ours:

👉 getting so burnt in Mexico from cheap suncream that my skin blistered

👉 hiking to the highest point in Central America thinking it would be easy, went without proper walking shoes and got sun burnt, altitude sickness and blistered feet

👉 getting food poisoning on the last day of a 4 day trek, having to hike back through the jungle for a full day without keeping down any food or water, diarrhoea & trying not to pass out

👉 being woken up by two people “having fun” in bed together then finding the condom packet on top of my clothing on the floor in the morning

When you’re travelling, things go wrong! It’s inevitable! The key is how you handle it.

Yes it can be stressful, but the more stressed out you get the worse it is.

Always try to travel WITH someone, so you have a partner to problem solve with 💕

Should you Learn Spanish for your trip? 🤔

In our opinion, the answer is YES, you should learn SOME Spanish before your trip.

It often comes as a surprise to many backpackers how little english is spoken in some Latin American countries.

Do yourself a favour and pick up some basics!

Not only is it respectful to the locals, but it will also make your life SO much easier. Your experience out there will transform with some spanish, trust us!

It’s good to think about the situations you’re going to be in, and the Spanish you’re going to need for that.

In this carousel we give you the basics for the following:
1️⃣ Greetings
2️⃣ Being polite
3️⃣ Directions
4️⃣ At a restaurant/cafe
5️⃣ Shopping
6️⃣ Safety & security

👉 When you’re travelling, the more you practice these words and phrases, the easier it’ll become!

📲 Consider writing a note on your phone with the most common ones, so you can refer back to them.

💡💡 TOP TIP: Did you know you can download a whole language onto google translate? That way if you lose signal or don’t have internet, you can still use the translator app (this can really come in handy!).

FUN FACT: Our founder Alfie can speak 5 languages! Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French and English. How insane is that?!

Do you think its important to learn some of a language prior to your trip? Let us know in the comments 👇👇

It’s never been easier👇

👌If you want to travel but the budget isn’t quite allowing it, consider these ways to make money WHILE travelling.

💻Learning a skill such as digital marketing, yoga teaching or teaching a language can enable you to work remotely - so you can travel while you’re working!

🦥Volunteering is a great way to massively reduce your costs, whilst having a stable base where you can really get to know a location and make lasting friendships.

✈️Alternatively, you could do a job that INVOLVES travelling - like a group leader, camp councellor or tour director.

Year abroad coming up?

Here are the Do’s and Don’ts for when you arrive, written by a member of our community who lived abroad in Mexico City 🇲🇽🌵🍸

Save this for your year abroad and send to a friend who’s going on one 😍

THE DO’S
✅ Follow the lights - look down side streets, through shop windows and around central squares. Lights = activity!
✅ Go for a drink alone - yes this seems a little daunting initially but if you’re on your own, people are actually more likely to approach you.
✅ Document your first weeks - write a journal, your future self will appreciat reading back on the highs and lows

THE DONT’S
❌ Forget to reach out to friends and family at home. They want to hear about what you’re up to and it’ll make you feel better to.
❌ Obsess over the language - you’ll practice tonnes when you’re there.
❌ Get complacent - Toby had his wallet nicked so justs be mindful of local customs and keeping safe.

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY
🥳 HAVE FUN!
🥳 Don’t take things too seriously, things going wrong is inevitable
🥳Drama abroad feels far more important than it ever is. Keep everything in perspective!
