Spindlewhorl: handwoven shawls, felt bags & purses, handmade felted soap, dropspindle kits, wet-felted flower lanyards, felted pods pots & bowls, hats, brooches, slippers, hair accessories & ocassionally even needlefelted sculpture. Spindlewhorl was founded in early 2012 by Lucy Wilkinson-Moore and her husband Adam in the heart of the ancient Marlborough Downs in beautiful Wiltshire. A tiny family
business, we work from our home studio hand-crafting unique felted bags, handwoven shawls, art and accessories from the finest silks, wools and natural fibres. Sometimes even our chickens inspire us. Unless it's raining, in which case they just look bedraggled and miserable which isn't very inspiring! Although we make things with a variety of fibres we particularly love wool for all it’s clever properties and have produced slippers, hats, bags, clothes and even sculpture using this astonishing substance.

BAGS:
We make a beautiful range of bags which are either wet felted or sometimes crocheted and felted and then embellished with needle felting and vintage buttons. Our bags are made with various types of wool and a range of fleeces depending on what would best suit the bag.

SHAWLS:
For our shawls, in addition to pure new wool, we also ethically source beautiful and unusual fibres from around the world and (literally), weave our magic using custom made looms and tools. They are made from a wide variety of fibres such as fine Merino wool, Mulberry silk, recycled sari silk and even banana silk (I know! How cool is that?). Some of our shawls are made with our own hand spun yarns and occasionally for ease of care we use a wool mix.

DROP SPINDLE KITS:
We also have a keen interest in history and a deep appreciation of ancient technologies which has led us to hand make our own drop spindle kits – they really are the best way to learn how to spin.

FELTED SOAP:
Our felted soaps are made with a variety of lovely hand-made SLS free soaps and we carefully hand felt each soap with fine, unspun wool to produce a seamless outer casing. When you use the soap it produces a gentle lather through the felt which acts as a simple but very effective exfoliator. We know it's weird but it's also amazingly clever and practical. Felted soap is perfect for:
TRAVEL because you don't need to take a flannel and they won't leak all over your smalls like liquid soaps do and because wool is naturally anti-bacterial you can put them away damp and they won't go manky. If you get one in a bright colour they're quite hard to lose on the campsite. KIDS because they don't slip and they're really hard to eat. Our felted soaps come in all sorts of bright colours and funky designs and because they're SLS free they're kind to skin too. You'll get the grimiest urchin clean and because the felt is such an effective exfoliator you won't have to scrub too hard. GARDENERS because some of our soaps come in odd organic shapes and are made with olive oil which is very kind to skin. The wool for our special Gardeners Soap is un-dyed and comes from sheep on Barbury Hill fort in Wiltshire and is a really effective exfoliator that will get the deepest grime from their green thumbs. OLDIES because they're wiser than the rest of us and know a good idea when they see one. And if you can't grip like you used to, you're less likely to drop the soap because the felt doesn't get slippery.
