🥳Good News Post! Mourne Park has now fully reopened!

Our recent repair work to Mourne Park has now been completed! 🎉

Our site managers have been working hard and we are pleased to announce that all 3 walking trails are fully open after the flooding and path damage earlier this year.

🌳 Mourne Park has one of the largest expanses of ancient woodland in Northern Ireland. Visit to explore over 73ha (180 acres) of ancient woodland, teeming with wildlife, and take in the panoramic views from the summit of Knockchree Mountain.

If you are looking for a big NI adventure this weekend, come visit us! 💚

Beautiful poster

Beautiful poster

🌿 kicks off today and we wanted to share this attractive Blanket Bog poster from the IrishPeatland ConservationCouncil to discover the rich and colourful biodiversity of the Blanket Bog that cloaks many of our hills.

🌿Blanket Bog is the deeper bog found on many of the flat areas, cols and slopes of our mountains, areas with high rainfall and poor drainage. We have two types of blanket bog - Atlantic Blanket Bog by the coast in the west, and Mountain Blanket Bog above a height of 200 metres. The bog is formed from partly decomposed plant matter - mainly the sphagnum mosses pictured at the top of this poster.

🌿Blanket Bog provides a refuge for some rare and interesting plants, insects and birds, many of the plants on this poster are specially adapted to survive in this acidic, nutrient-poor environment. Blanket Bog, like our midland Raised Bogs are important carbon stores, Ireland has 8% of the world's blanket bog, making this one of our most important habitat types.

🌿Thanks to Paula Farrell from the Irish Peatland Conservation Council who created this poster, which is copyright of the Irish Peatland Conservation Council. Download a PDF here -https://mountaineering.ie/_files/Blanket-Bog-Poster.pdf

Our Story

Like many people, our desire to try off-grid living was a reaction to the issues of climate change and uncertainty. These now seem to be an inescapable fact of life in the 21st century. We decided to become more self reliant whilst working with other like minded families to establish a resilient community. As a result that stretches from our immediate neighbourhood right across the island of Ireland.

We came from ‘regular’ 9-5 jobs, typical levels of modern debt and exhaustion, and decided to give it up to live in a converted horsebox while volunteering on a friend’s farm. From there we found Lackan Cottage Farm and established our own smallholding using permaculture and organic principles.

We do most things for ourselves, and then share the skills we have learned with visitors. This can be through courses, open days, visitors to Birch Eco Cottage or the Off Grid Horsebox or with the many international volunteers that we welcome each year.

Our aim is to substantially meet our energy, food, water and waste requirements from our smallholding. Furthermore, to provide a healthy and ecologically sound environment in which visitors can learn from our experiences. We show how it is possible to live in a more sustainable manner without compromising their standard of living.
