Celebrating and Honouring 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝗛𝗲𝘇𝗹𝗲𝘁: A Trailblazer in Golf from the 1800s and a Legacy That Inspires.

What a special moment at 𝗥𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗵 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗳 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯 this year. We are thrilled that our Founder and CEO, Hazel Thompson, MBA, had the honour of winning two incredible trophies—but even more so, it has been an opportunity to reflect on the remarkable legacy of May Hezlet, a true trailblazer in women’s golf.

🏆 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝘇𝗹𝗲𝘁 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘆: This match play knockout trophy, presented by May in her later years, carries her pioneering spirit. Winning it is a privilege that connects Hazel—and all competitors—to May’s incredible contributions to the game.

🏆 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝘂𝗽: Played for since 1899, this historic cup symbolizes generations of golfing excellence. It’s humbling to have Hazel’s name added to its legacy.

𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝗛𝗲𝘇𝗹𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 is nothing short of inspiring. Born in 1882 near 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗵 she became a golfing sensation as the youngest-ever winner of the 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗟𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗔𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 at just 17. She is credited with putting 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗵 on the world map. Her talent and determination brought her two more wins at that prestigious event and five 𝗜𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗟𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀’ 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀, with her fifth win here at 𝗥𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗵 in 1908.

But May’s influence went far beyond trophies. In 1904, she wrote 𝗟𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗳, a groundbreaking book that encouraged more women to take up the sport. As one of the earliest advocates for women’s golf, she shaped the game for generations to come.

Apparently next year, her legacy is being rightfully honoured with a Blue Plaque at Royal Portrush by the Ulster History Circle—a fitting tribute to her profound impact on the sport and the region.(As published by the Ulster History Circle 24/11/24)

For Hazel, winning trophies that hold such historical significance is an honour and a reminder of the giants who paved the way. Hazel says this moment is less about personal success and more about celebrating the enduring legacy of women like May, who broke barriers and set the stage for future generations.

During her current visit to Australia, our Founder and CEO, Hazel Thompson reconnected with Alison Metcalfe, Executive Vice President and Head of North America, Australia, and New Zealand for Tourism Ireland and Sofia Hansson , Director for Australia and New Zealand at Tourism Ireland.

Building on their ongoing collaboration, they had a productive discussion focused on the latest trends in Australian travel to , with a particular emphasis on the ongoing popularity of golf tourism. Together, they also explored comparisons with the thriving North American market underscoring Ireland’s unique appeal to golfers worldwide. They met in the iconic Vue de monde Lui Bar on the 55th floor of with sweeping views of the Melbourne’s city scapes

Irish golf shone at the DP World Tour Championship in , with three players from the island of Ireland celebrating standout achievements. claimed victory and his sixth Harry Vardon Trophy, capped a consistent season with a third-place finish and crucial Ryder Cup points, and rising star 𝗧𝗼𝗺 𝗠𝗰𝗞𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗶𝗻, just 21, following in Rory’s footsteps with his home club HOLYWOOD GOLF CLUB secured his PGA Tour card.

Adding to this success, Holywood Golf Club men 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘆 𝗠𝗰𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗸 and 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗱 were on the bags for their respective players, playing vital roles in these triumphs.

Number one ranked golf course in the world!

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending the 2024 Irish Open DP World Tour
at number one ranked golf course in the world - Royal County Down. The atmosphere was electric, with large crowds cheering on the players particularly big followings for the locals Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry and Tom McKibbin.

A special congratulations to the main sponsor, Amgen (NASDAQ: AMGN), a global leader in biotechnology, for their warm hospitality and support. Also to Emirates Airlines for their support.

Thank you to Tourism Northern Ireland and Fáilte Ireland for the gracious invitation to the corporate hospitality beside the 18th Green. Global events like these showcase the beauty of Ireland and its unique passion for golf
