3 of the best ski resorts for this Christmas.

Fancy a festive ski trip where you’ll stand a real chance of a white Christmas? Then it would make a lot of sense to aim high. With increasingly unpredictable snow patterns skiers are more cautious than ever when picking a resort. Trouble is, the well known, high resorts will always charge a premium, so here are a few resorts for Christmas snow that may offer slightly better value for money:

Les Menuires, France
Tucked just under one of the highest resorts in Europe, Val Thorens, in one of the largest and varied ski areas - the Three Valleys, Les Menuires is a good option for getting access to the Three Valleys without forking out for the well known resorts of Meribel, Courchevel and Val Thorens. Everything here from accommodation to meals out is a bit better value, and as much of the resort is purpose built there are lots of great ski in ski out options.

La Rosiere, France
Right on the France/Italy border, La Rosiere gives you access to the San Bernado ski area, with 152 kms of pistes to conquer across La Rosiere and La Thuile in Italy. A great way to ski across both countries and sample a bit of both. Two new fast six-pack chairlifts were built up Mont Valaisan to open up a fantastic area of off piste, as well as five new red runs. This has added more advanced terrain to the ski area, making it more varied than ever before. Just make sure that if you’re crossing the Italian border you return before the last lifts close – the taxi ride back will be extremely expensive!

Cervinia, Italy
I only recently learned it’s pronounced che-vinia (been saying it wrong for a very long time 🙈). This resort is another country-straddler, with a full lift pass offering you access to Zermatt in Switzerland. Cervinia offers great intermediate skiing with sunny, high, snow-sure slopes and wonderful views of the Matterhorn - and it’s a lot cheaper than over the border in Zermatt. Who doesn’t like to get their money’s worth? Two countries for the price of one!

If you are thinking of a festive ski trip be quick, it’s a peak week and a lot has sold out already. Contact me for help with getting the best ski trip organised sharpish!

Destination Guide - Alvor, Portugal.

Find those hidden gems away from the big resorts.

Away from the hustle and bustle of sprawling Albufeira, Alvor is a delightful village with a distinctively Portuguese ambience. Think traditional whitewashed houses, narrow cobbled streets, and fishing boats moored along the banks of the river. Alvor may be a relatively small village, but it contains a surprisingly large selection of restaurants, shops and late-night bars, all of which are found within the pretty historic centre.

A holiday to Alvor is often focused around the beach, but there is a lot to see and do within the surrounding region. There are exciting waterparks, boat tours, golf courses, nature trails, dolphin watching trips, along with day trips to the fortified town of Silves, the historic city of Portimão, or the lively resort of Praia da Rocha.

How will you spend your holiday? Here are a few ideas:

1. Sampling the excellent Portuguese seafood, delicious sardines and catapalana (metal cooking pot used to cook shellfish)
2. Strolling along Alvor Boardwalk which takes you from one end of the town to the other along the beaches and over the dunes. Take your evening stroll before…
3. Soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying a glass or two of vino verde in one of the local bars, sat outside on the cobbled streets enjoying a true Portuguese welcome.

Alvor is under an hour from Faro Airport, so very easy and convenient with a flight from Cornwall Airport Newquay. No need to tackle the M5 and Bristol airport for your holiday.

World’s Your Ouster specialises in putting together holiday packages from Cornwall Airport Newquay - everything is taken care of from your flight, transfers, accommodation and even days out. Let me do the hard work, all you need to do is get to the airport (well I can even help with that if you need me to!).

Ever wondered how to get a flight upgrade? Which seat is the best? Read on…

The Sunday Times Chief travel writer, Chris Haslam gives his best advice from years of flying a round the globe.

1. Check in online
Ideally using the airline app rather than the website, as the former will keep you updated on delays, gate changes and boarding times. Getting first dibs on the best seat sounds obvious, but between 40 and 60 per cent of long-haul passengers (depending on who you ask) still hit the self-service kiosk or the check-in desk on the day of travel in a last-ditch attempt to bag a premium spot. Choosing where you sit not only gives you a modicum of control in a largely passive experience, but also improves your chances of getting the meal you want (airlines nearly always serve from front to back), being able to sit together and, above all, avoiding that dreaded middle seat.

2. Pick your seat carefully
I’ve found that an aisle seat in the front part of the economy cabin is usually the smartest choice in terms of loo and galley access and offering a little bit of extra breathing space, but there are exceptions. A window seat on the starboard side for daytime westbound transatlantic crossings offers magnificent views of Greenland, while one on the port side for a night-time eastbound flight can be a great vantage point for the northern lights. I’ll take the port side for night flights to Africa to watch the sun rise over Mount Kilimanjaro and the starboard side for early-morning departures from Kathmandu, when the Himalayas seem higher than the plane. Don’t know what wonders await? Type your flight number into flightradar.com and the path of your journey will be revealed.

3. Upgrades are unlikely
As a defiant economista I’m not in the market for upgrades, but every now and then you’ll see articles listing five, ten or more “surefire ways” to get into business class. These range from being chatty with the desk staff (they actually hate that) and saying that you’re on honeymoon to wearing a suit and checking in last. None of the above work, and the sad truth is that in the era of revenue management upgrades are allocated long before you check in, so no amount of smarm will make a difference. But if you really, really want to get into biz, here are two ways to get there: one, get a jet-setting job that earns you middle-tier or upper-tier loyalty status with an airline; two, buy a business-class ticket.

4. Business class is overrated
I’ve travelled in all classes on most airlines and realised that the expense of the big seats never justifies the degree to which they mitigate the tedium of a long-haul flight — six hours in British Airways’ business-class cabin from London to New York costs more than three nights at the upmarket Bowery Hotel in downtown Manhattan. Some argue that they need a flatbed, big telly and a tiny glass of champagne to “hit the ground running”, but frankly, after 30 years of frequent flying for this job, I’ve never felt more rested after landing in biz than I did in economy — even when flying to Australia. I do miss the customer service of business class, though — they say that courtesy costs nothing, but it’s not always available down the back.

Oh this brings back memories.

What bargains do you remember?

I think my best was in 1995/96. A week in Alanya, Turkey, return flights from Gatwick, one bed self catering apartment. £99! Didn’t use the return flights as travelled round Turkey for 8 weeks.

Bargain!

If you've always fancied finding the Greek Island the Greeks holiday on, this may be it! As featured in this week's Saturday Times Travel article by Lucy Perrin, Kea Island, a short 40 minute speed boat ride from Athens is where Athenians escape for the weekend.

The excusive One&Only Collection have just opened a new resort there, but one week would set you back around £11,500. If you dont have that kind of money behind the sofa, consider this package instead to grab the last of the Autumn sunshine:

Sunday 6th October - Sunday 13th

✈ Return flights from Bristol to Athens with reserved seats
🧳23kg hold baggage per person
🛌 6 nights B&B accommodation in Aigis Suites in a superior suite with sea view
🛌 1 night's accommodation in Athens (after outward flight)
🛳 Ferry from Athens Lavrio port to Kea Island

£1450 per person (based on two people sharing)

Top tip - you will never get flight prices cheaper than the first 15 minutes after they are released. So if you want to grab yourself a bargain for next summer set you alarm for Tuesday morning. They normally come out at around 6-7am. Even better, go via the app. Good luck!

Let's talk end of season holidays. October can be a great time to get the last of the sunshine with warm seas, less crowds and better prices. But you need to pick your desitnation carefully if you still want to be able to enjoy some heat. Here are my best picks for short-haul October destinations.

Average temperatures in October:

Antalya, Turkey - 20 ºC
Rhodes , Greece - 21 ºC
Paphos, Cyprus - 22 ºC
Tenerife, Canary Islands - 22 ºC
Marrakech, Morocco - 21 ºC
Agadir, Morocco - 22 ºC
