After a number of years trading on eBay and elsewhere online selling secondhand and collectable books, Artistic Originals is a return to my first love of art. Twenty years after getting my MA in art, and after various jobs, and raising two children to school age, I'm building a business from what had been relegated to an occasional pastime. I sell on eBay and Etsy, as well as taking on commissions

So, I'm back after a *very* long break. Haven't had time for anything other than the barest minimum of art (either for myself or for commissions) over the past couple of years. But I'm easing my way back into things with a little art for art's sake...

So, here's a little sketch I did. Looks like just a random sketch of a few shells and pebbles. However, these aren't just any shells and pebbles. A couple of years ago we went on holiday to Ayrshire and were amazed at the huge variety of colourful shells and minerals to be found on the beach. I collected a few and bought home a handful of Scotland. So these are they. Just a humble pencil sketch, but it was good to get into drawing again. :-)

This little watercolour study of a blackbird was a piece I chose for a workshop group to complete. It was a great exercise in luminous washes and allowing the paint to do the work. The simple shapes meant that the group could concentrate on the paint rather than their drawing skills.

This has to be one of my most unusual commissions. The client had visited a wildlife park on holiday and she and her family had fallen in love with the aye-ayes. They decided that a portrait would be a great way to remember what was a very special holiday. This is my usual pastels and tinted charcoal.

This commission was a large scale pastel sketch - much looser than my usual work and great fun to do.

Well, I've been neglecting this page on a monumental scale! I've been busy with my work at 2021 Visual Arts Centre as well as delivering workshops to schools and to adult groups in the local community. But while I've stopped for the moment selling through Etsy and Folksy, I have still been taking on the occasional commission. So it's time to revive Artistic Originals with a few animal portraits have been sitting in my private photo collection until now. This first one was a commissioned portrait of three Yorkshire Terriers, a composite taken from separate photos of the clients pets over the years. This is acrylic on canvas.
