Too late for solstice at top of mountain (alore of watching with cup of tea in ned too strong first thing) but listening to the choughs and spotting emerging heather amongst the bedstraw give midsummer peace.

One of the joys of my job is seeing familiar places from different angles - trains and boats (and I've even guided on a plane!) Today with Rib Ride the knowledgeable skipper told us all about Bangor pier, smuggler's cave, lighthouse building and the important bird colonies especial the cormorants and a seal came very close !

I've been having a short break from a busy guiding season and walking the North Wales Pilgrim's Way / Taith Pererin Gogledd Cymru which has now joined Llwybr Arfordir Cymru / Wales Coast Path. Sand and soft grass, friends and tea, macro views and micro botanising. Life is indeed good

A good tour guide points out the little things you may walk right by and uses them to draw you deeper into the natural and human culture of an area. Two examples from yesterday's hike. Butterwort - an insectivorous plant that grows in the acid bogs of Eryri (snowdonia) and the lovely wrought iron gate made by local blacksmith Dylan Parry which reflects the syncline (layered geology) that you shortly see in the cliffs around Cwm Idwal.

Today we went up to the top of the towers (13th century) and then down into the depths of a mine where 4000 years ago children were scraping copper out of the mountain. Wales always delivers!

Exploring eastern Anglesey yesterday (blessed with sightings of a red squirrel, a hare and also farmer and his dogs moving sheep with their lambs) we stumbled across a little church with a plaque inside to the least famous of the Morris brothers. His older brothers were talented musicians, chart-makers, naturalists, historians. The youngest brother died in battle in the Caribbean where he is more infamous as he bought a slave.

On the far northern tip of Wales is St. Patrick’s church - because the saint was shipwrecked here in the 5th century and survived by water from the spring below where the church is now. Today I climbed down there and verified the spring. Look also at the light streaming in the unusual windows - the man who paid for the restoration was Muslim so no images of living things hence the patterns in the glass and tiles. As you know a friend and I have been plodding North Wales Pilgrim's Way / Taith Pererin Gogledd Cymru for a year. We love the trail as not only does in go through the best of countryside but lots of interest to tourist guides. Today first picture is Cochwillan, a wonderful 15th century hall house, the second is us geekishly celebrating another milestone on Thomas Telford's "new road". The chair is the Augustine Throne in Bangor cathedral because the Bishop of Bangor is currently Archbishop of Wales and the last figure is a green man pew end - Enjoy like we did this morning

When guiding we use TVPs (top visual priorities)i.e. things the group can see and will want to know about before you get on to anything else and here is a big one as we come out of Holyhead port. The old Anglesey Aluminium chimney which was so high its head was often in the clouds. Well it is no more as at this afternoon. Credit for pic

Love my job - today hearing the legend of Gelert the faithful dog and visiting Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation with students from Wales Best Guides British Guild of Tourist Guides for a marvellous insight into the professionalism of these volunteers with very little public funding. Mountain Rescue in the UK is free thanks to their dedication.

Here I am stood next to part of Offa's D**e, the boundary built by the Mercian king Offa in the 790s to warn the Welsh "stay over there!" The popular long distance trail (shown here on the map reproduced by the Cicerone guide book) does not always follow the D**e taking a route of more interest to hikers. In this case the path follows the Clwydian Hills to the West ignoring this bit of the earthwork
