Welcome!
Bean Tree View is part of a large Georgian House (often referred to as a mansion....). The house was built around 1760, with later (mostly Victorian) additions. Its first known resident was a Rev. Farnham Haskell and his son-in-law Peard Jillard. Little is known about their stay, although Peard Jillard sold the house in 1806.
In 1819 Col. Thomas Patton and his new wife Matilda (nee Winsloe - her uncle was the founder of The Times) began a long residency! They had nine children whilst living here and before her death Matilda Patton (known as Old Mrs Patton) was the longest living resident in Bishops Hull.
Mr and Mrs Manley lived in the house between 1889 and 1904, then in 1904 the house was purchased by the Philip Waterfield and his wife Pheobe Waterfield (nee Coates) who made Victorian changes to the house (changed the windows, added front and back porches and added the north wing - now Bean Tree View!). Waterfield Drive (off Bishops Hull Road) was named after Pheobe Waterfield who was a very active member of the Parish Council, and a very popular figure in the village. Pheobe later lived in Eagle House - build in the grounds of Bishops Hull House (now our next door neighbor). The eagle on the gatepost of Eagle House - used to sit above the porch at Bishops Hull House - presumably taken when eagle house was built and named. It was replaced with a strange looking lion!
