The bullet train Tangier to Casablanca was fun though no WiFi or trolley service as was promised by ONCF but I liked the 'lean' as the train cornered at speed! Sadly only 1 night here at the new (ish) Oberoi in Marrakech
Quite, quite superb. And they even found an old photo of me and framed it and put it in my room. The staff are wonderful, the accommodation is delightful and the food exceptional

In 2019 I was lucky enough to be just outside Calcutta in the village of Balwari and stumbled across the Durga Puja festival.
The arrival of the Mother Goddess is greeted in India with reverence, the beating of drums and breathless excitement. Durga Puja was recently included in the list of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The festival marks the victory of the Goddess Durga, in her battle against the shape shifting demon – Mahishasura. It is also believed that during this period the mother goddess visits her earthly home, and the last five days of her visit are the most important. Huge marquees, many resembling some of the most famous temples and monuments house gorgeously dressed and bejeweled images of the goddess and her four children. On the last day she is taken to the river and ceremoniously immersed, returning to her celestial home.

And in celebration I had a delicious brunch at Marrakech Artisan . Shakshuka for me and tagine for my friend followed by excellent mint tea and pastries. Lovely service, excellent food and a delightful new find. We will be back!

And the fourth and final jaunt of this episode was to the magnificent Sissinghurst Castle, home and (mainly) garden of Vita Sackville West. The garden 'rooms' are colour coded sublimity and completely enchanting.
And so the trust bonanza continued. This time to Scotney Castle which is beautiful and chosen by one of the duck worriers I took with me (along with my lovely friend Rai who worried no ducks)

Next on to Bateman's which was Rudyard Kipling's home. Got there a bit late to get into the house but had a lovely bimble around the gardens and down to the old mill. Drooled over his Rolls Royce Phantom 1 (that car would so suit me) and vowed to give myself more time next visit and wear sensible shoes to explore the 300 acre estate properly. What a glorious day out I've had and made me less miserable at not being able to be elsewhere.
A wonderful afternoon of local solo travel. First to Smallhythe Place the 16th century house and gardens which belonged to Ellen Terry and where her daughter Edy Craig also lived with Chris and Tony (both women) in a menage a trois. Suffragettes, Bloomsbury set, theatre, ship building, artists, poets, authors agogo. The list goes on. Fascinating.
