"The rooms and amenities were modern and extensive in each of the houses.
John’s a HOOT and we enjoyed his breakfast every morning while there. He truly cares about his estate. His daughters were very nice, accommodating, and enjoyable to chat with, and helped out when needed or asked.
The proximity to St. Andrews a big plus! The proximity to the Peat Inn, a 2024 Michelin 1 Star restaurant, is a huge plus, and we enjoyed an outstandingly delicious culinary experience! The private dinner was OUTSTANDING! A wonderful culinary experience of two great chefs, beautiful presentations of delicious “surf and turf” and wines.
The Scotch tasting was very enjoyable and he was very knowledgeable and gave an interesting and enjoyable tasting experience."

STUCKTAYMORE - What’s the story – who built it, what was it originally, how did it come to be yours?

The title Earl of Breadalbane refers to a noble title in Scottish peerage. It was created in 1677 for Sir John Campbell of Glenorchy, who became the first Earl of Breadalbane. His family, part of the Clan Campbell, had considerable influence in the Highlands and particularly in Perthshire and Argyll. The Breadalbane family was known for its historic events, including the Jacobite uprisings and political affairs across Scotland. The Breadalbane Estate, including Taymouth Castle near Loch Tay, was one of Scotland’s largest estates featuring stunning landscapes, lochs, and forests. Over the centuries, the family held significant power and wealth, with successive Earls playing various roles in Scottish history. The title eventually became dormant in the 20th century, but it remains a noteworthy part of Scottish nobility and heritage.

Originally the estate covered over 50,000 acres of land on the north shore of the loch and included much of what is now Killin village. Over the years the main house now called Stucktaymore, has been a summer residence, a hunting lodge, a rented farm with a variety of animals, a home for the records of Scotland during WW2. It was then converted into a hotel which ran for 50 years and with 3 owners. Next it became a residential management training centre. Now, completely upgraded and renovated into a luxury private residence with 13 ensuite bedrooms full of Scottish character. The property sits within 2 acres of formal garden and 2 acres of enchanted forest ready to explore, providing the most spectacular setting for large gatherings with family and friends.

21 TODAY! 😍

When the review title states " An amazing place" - read on...

I celebrated my 65th birthday at Bolfracks House a couple of weeks back with a dozen or so old friends... it was the ideal place for this activity! We spent most of our time in the large kitchen (no surprise there!), the dining room and the lower whiskey room... there were many other gorgeous rooms, where my guests were able to spend some quiet time to get away from the craziness in the kitchen! We particularly like the "morning" room (our designation, the room with the record player), where the early birds amongst us would gather in our pajamas to chat and drink coffee before the lazybutts got their act together... the views are amazing, and the setting gorgeous... the staff are fab, particularly Luke the groundskeeper, who was more than helpful on several occasions! There was plenty of parking beside both the lower, primary entrance and the upper, kitchen entrance (we had a couple fo guests that were mobility challenged and coming through the kitchen aided them tremendously), so no problem there. I would highly recommend the property to anyone looking for a special place to celebrate a special occasion... even to the point where we are beginning to kinda plan a trip for next year with the same group of fantastic reprobates that I call friends!!

We look forward to welcoming many more clients for their birthday celebrations.

Congratulations to the entire team at Hawkswood Country Estate for looking after our recent American client, ESPN through their golf tour operator. Not only receiving a wonderful review by YouTube but their comments is the reason why the owner family do what they do...

The Roundel...
The property speaks for itself. I cannot imagine ANY group of golfers NOT enjoying the experience. But what you don't see behind the scenes is the amount of care and dedication that the owners put forward to make sure every guest is having the best possible experience. This is a first-class facility!

Bowhill House...
I was able to stay in the Bowhill House with my group of golfers and it could not have suited us better. We took full advantage of the amenities offered, using the driving range, short-game area, and hot tub on multiple occasions. The quality of the house itself was only exceeded by the service that was provided by John and his family. We were completely taken care of!

Hawkswood House...
I was co-host for a group of 20 who utilized the Hawkswood Country Estates for 3 nights as part of a St. Andrews golf package that I organized. I had taken a tour of Hawkswood previously, but to see a group using the entire facility and see how things are run by the family that owns the facility, I could not be more impressed by the overall experience. As a professional golf tour operator, I have the good fortune of seeing dozens of high-end destinations and all kinds of lodging options for golfers. The Hawkswood Country Estates is one of the finest family-run establishments I have ever seen!

We continue the history series around my properties on Susan Reid Collection, Scotland - luxury in Scotland with today a feature on Stuckgowan, Loch Lomond....

When was the property built?
The property and the grounds were built between the years of 1798 and 1810, originally as a country residence.

What’s the story?
Stuckgowan was built by the McMurrick family. At the time the estate covered 5000 acres of land spreading over the local village of Tarbet and over the hills to Arrochar. John McMurrick lived in Stuckgowan House until his death in 1846, then passed to his nephew James McMurrick, who stayed at the property until the 1880’s when the estate was sold to the Colquhoun family.
John McMurrick sold Scottish oak to the Govan shipyards, where he met and became partners with David Napier, one of the creators of steamship travel. Together they brought the first paddle steamer, Marion to Loch Lomond in 1818. The steamers brought the first tourists from the bottom of the Loch to Tarbet and essentially opened up the full area of Loch Lomond to tourism. McMurrich was then involved in several other business ventures within the area. He had many famous friends who visited his country home including Sir Walter Scott, the author of Rob Roy.
