Robert Fergusson

Carrying on with our look at Edinburgh Cannongate Kirkyard and its famous 'interments'.

Young Poet, Robert Fergusson is one of Edinburgh's home grown talent.

Born on the 5 September 1750 in "Cap and Feather Close" off the Royal Mile. Unfortunately, his house no longer stands due to the city's ever changing skyline and was subsequently knocked down for the expansion of the North Bridge.

Robert would go on to become a successful poet and carried on not to forget his proud Edinburgh roots. In his work ‘Auld Reikie'. Fergusson would pay homage to his city however, in the midst of this praise a mundane theme also runs throughout, showing large void in its class system and overall its depravities.

Fergusson would became the forerunner to the Ayrshire poet Robert Burns, who growing up had a great admiration of Fergusson.

Ferguson would only live to see the age of 24 having died in Edinburghs Bedlam. Placed in an unmarked grave his legacy is remembered in the kirk yard, thanks to Robert Burns paying for his current headstone in 1787. Robert Louis Stevenson planned to renovate the stone but never lived to set out his plans.

In 2004 a life size statue was unveiled outside the Kirk and can be seen as you walk down the Cannongate.
