Happy World Frog Day! 🐸🐸🐸

In the UK we have two native frog species, the Common Frog (Rana temporaria) and the Pool Frog (Pelophylax lessonae). But did you know they have permeable skin, allowing them to absorb oxygen directly from water? 💧

Like other amphibians, frogs have permeable skin which facilitates gas exchange. They also have lungs for breathing on land. Their permeable skin allows them to stay submerged in water for long periods of time if oxygen levels are high enough. This is how some adult frogs can hibernate in the bottom of ponds over winter. ❄️

Opportunities to get involved!

PondNet Spawn Survey - It’s spawning season, so Freshwater Habitats have set up a survey system for us all to record our frog and toad spawn sightings. It is very easy to do and requires no log in. All the data goes to ARG/ARC’s record pool system to better understand how amphibians use different types of waterbodies to breed. Link:

Toad Patrols! - check out the link to find nearby patrols if you’d like to volunteer to get involved, especially as many frogs and toads are migrating to their breeding ponds right now. There are currently no patrols in the Swansea & Gower areas, but if anyone knows of any sites that would benefit from a patrol (such as roads with frequent crossings by amphibians), please let us know so we can go take a look.
