Dragon's Breath 🐉

When the nights get longer and the air gets colder, the dragons wake and send their steam winding down our river valleys. This 'Dragon's Breath' (or Cloud Inversion for those less poetically minded) is an incredible sight, as the valley floor becomes carpeted with cloud.

The hills of Abergavenny are a great place to see this phenomenon, as you can climb above the mist and look out over a sea of cloud, with island-like mountain tops wearing the gold, amber and red of autumn.

Winter in Bannau Brycheiniog is a beautiful time, however it’s important to be aware that the weather can change quickly and that the skies get darker earlier ⛰️

✅ Be and stay safe whilst exploring our park:

🥪 Take adequate warm clothing, food, a hot drink and a fully charged phone.

🌧️ Heed advice and weather warnings. Monitor local media for updates.

🐑 Do not obstruct gateways - farmers need access to fields to check on the welfare of animals.

🐾 Keep dogs under control at all times

🚗 Many vehicles are damaged during periods of icy conditions – drive and park sensibly.

🛑 Please pay attention to signage, especially in wet or snowy conditions

📱 If you do run into an emergency in our park, call 999 and ask for the police and then Mountain Rescue.

Do you have a favourite post-Christmas walk? A regular go-to, or do you seek out something new each year?

If you're looking for a great post-Christmas walk or day out, then Chepstow fits the bill. It's the start / end point for the Llwybr Arfordir Cymru / Wales Coast Path, the Wye Valley Walk and the Offa's D**e Path, plus has great circular walks up the Wye Valley towards Tintern and along the beautiful Gwent Levels.

It also has the fantastic Chepstow Castle to enjoy with their Light Up Reindeer Trail running until New Year's Eve, and the Coral Welsh Grand National at Chepstow Racecourse on the 27th.

Thanks to for this great photo of Chepstow Castle high on the cliffs above the River Wye.

What an atmospheric photo of Abergavenny, with the Skirrid in the background and Dragon's Breath over the town.

When we talk about the atmosphere this time of year, this is what we mean. Stunning colours, low cloud, nature and wildlife all around our county towns.

Thanks to for the photo.
