Yuri Gagarin in space!

60 years ago, on 12 April, the Vostok spaceship with Pilot-Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on board was launched from the #Baikonur Cosmodrome. Yuri Gagarin completed a single orbit of the Earth - the very first time a man had been to space! Yuri Gagarin’s statement before take-off: “Dear friends, both near and dear and those unknown to me, my compatriots and people of all countries and continents! In a few minutes, a powerful spacecraft will carry me into the far-away expanses of the Universe. What can I say to you in these last few minutes before take-off? At this instant, the whole of my life seems to be condensed into one wonderful moment. Everything I have experienced and done till now has been in preparation for this moment. You must realise that it is hard to express my feeling now that the test for which we have been training long and passionately is at hand. I hardly need to tell you how I felt when I was offered to make the first space flight in history. Was it joy? No, it wasn’t just joy. Was it pride? No, it wasn’t just pride. I felt great happiness.
